I wonder if the white Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) comes "true" or reverts to purple... do you know, Maggie? Either way, it's a pretty little shrub! I've got a purple one, and I love it! The catalogs tend to show the berries looking like they could be the size of cherries, LOL... actually, they're quite dainty, but they're brightly colored. I think I've heard you can winter sow this one, too... maybe Suzy would know.
Here's my purple one, with my hand for scale.
CLOSED: Second Chance Wishlist #4
The one white beauty berry stays true and doesn't revert. They sure are bird magnets. Excellent food for feeding the birds long through the winter.
Maggie, ya got a want list?

Hi margaran, I would love to try the coral bean if avail if Suzy, and any newest folks pass on it
Updated want list.
Thanks to this swap, I want,
another wheelbarrol
6 strong backed men to help break up soil
6 shovels for those men
a semi load of boards to build new beds
three semi loads of a nice soandy loam complete with organic material already mixed in
20 lbs of sugar, and a half ton of coffee to keep up my energy while plantign all these seeds
which remind sme a big spotlight, cuz it looks like I wil be planting well into dark too. Batteries included please. : )
at least 1" of rain a week
some nice sunny weather but not to hot
and lastly a touch of magic that wil make everythign grow and bloom and beatutifully.
Don't mind me. for the this post .... the seeds made me say it. : )
Star-you had me ROTFLMAO!!! I want to copy her list too please!!LOL:)
You are brilliant! Add all that to my want list . . . . you obviously have very clever seeds!
oooo - Star - I was ROFLMAO too!! But then I read through your whole list, and I would LOVE for Mother Nature to be even just a *bit* more cooperative this year - I don't know what I'll do if we run into another drought!!
Seems like we just need to schedule some good old fashioned barn-raisings, don't we? Bedouin Planters Unite??
I'll happily send you some of the overload of rain that we have had during the last three summers. Would love some real sun and drought.....
Sounds like a perfect swap to me!
Star, you are too funny! I think we needed a break in the seed frenzy for a good chuckle.
maggie - you've got a d-mail from me, too.
don't want to hijack, but Tuink's right - the weather is just weird all over...the summer I was in Antwerp (OK, over 30 years ago...) the weather was like a postcard every day. Even the rain was cooperative and beautiful!
Sun for rain, sound slike a good swap to me too. Parched to the bone down here.
Oh and I forgot one very imp[ortant, I want..
tons of nice pinebark mulch, so I don't have to pull all the weeds from all those beds. Weed pulling is hard on the fingernails and knees.
if nobody has the mulch to swap then please send cd's loaded with upbeat and a good disco beat so I can get a good groove on while pulling those nasty, pestersistant, pain in the rump weeds.
Now for trade for those items, I will have
Plenty of coffee to share, so you can pull up a chair and have a cup.
Muchles for ya to look at, and you can think so glad it not my back gonna be hurting tonight.
6 bottles of Doan's pills for those that just have to get out there and play in the dirt.
two ears and two shoulders to be used as cryign towels when damping off or the grasshoppers eat your newest pride and joy
nice fluffy drool towels when ya get to se e your new babies and plenty extra for other folks when they start drooling over the lovely p[ics ya gonna have next year.
plenty of paper plates, cuz it looks like we all gonna be having sandwhiches for our meals and eatign them in the garden
tylenol for the headache we gonna have when we get out packages and say ' Whatevr was I thinking' LOL
and an over abundance of good wishes and hope that everybody has one fantastic season.
send requests for these trades to
buried in seed trades@ compost.com : )
Starlight, I am somewhat familiar with American geography - but not the abreviations for the states. Does Al - mean you are from Alaska - or Alabama? You don't have a zone listed, otherwise I could make an intelligent guess.
The reason being, I want to know how close you are - you sound like a great neighbour to me!
edited to add: I hope I am as good a neighbour. :-) You set a fine example, Star

Dryad, Even the rain was cooperative and beautiful? Not if you have 4 months of it!
I am in Alabama. Think AK Alaska , but I bad on geography too. Anythign west of the Mississippii that in the middle of the Us I have to double look at a map. Then I wonder wow when did that state get there. Wish now that way back in high school I hadn't spent my time catching a bunch of zzzzz's.
I am in zone 8a / 8b. I stradled both zones, but with being down in a hole I can grow things soem thinsg that normally would fry here. I am usually 10-15F colder than folsk around me in the morning and have the heat and sun last longer in the evenings.
That the great hing about computers even if I illeteriate on them. Your nearest gardening neighbor and friend is only a cycber thread away.
Gotta go brave the cold and go to store. I need more envies. Now if I can just find where I buried my ski hat.
Oy! I have to go searching now, because some of my favorite bookmarks got munched when my laptop died... anybody know how to get to that game where you have to click on state abbreviations? there's also one for state capitols and one for puzzle-like outlines of the states on the map...
anyway, AL is Alabama, and AK is Alaska
http://www.al.com/
I found one of the sites I was thinking of!
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm
But I don't think the game with the state abbreviations is here...
Sorry, Suzy, I know I've veered wildly off topic... Seandor started it! (sorta) LOL
hello

It's a really good thing I abstained from this swap. Otherwise, I'd have pounced on the banana seeds, and between the pups in the dining room and the big bananas in the basement there is no more room in the "tropicals" bed by the deck... and I can't designate another, bigger bed for tropicals, because DH will revolt if there are any more big plants that he has to help drag inside every fall! ROFLOL
To paraphrase an oldie, "Yes! We have no (more room for) bananas!"
you're just teasing me...
Since many of us are getting ready to ship out packages... I thought I'd add this part of Suzy's original post.... and re-read the part about postage and envelop/box size and being stingy on postage... as i totally BLEW that part. LOL... too small of an envie (I sent a big one, but not big enough) and not enough postage... Luckliy (or not) i have to send another small package to Suzy, so i will be doing the BOX this time.
****Things to pack up for the swap:
1. Your seeds. added: Since I need to send back as many packs as people send in, I need some help counting. LOL! On the baggies that are tagged for certain people, I'd like the number of packs you've enclosed for that person written on the slip of paper with their name so I don't have to go rooting through to count them.
2. Return address label (or piece of paper I can tape) to use on bubble mailer you send to me.
3. I will need at .least a 10 x 14" envie., or a little box, to get your seeds to you. (The PO has a 3/4 inch limit on bubble envie thickness)
4. Postage to return your mailer to you.. If you have 100 packs, use postage for 13 oz. and consider sending me a little box instead of an envie.) added: If you want extra packs back, really, really .consider that box! .And pay attention to the postage amount you send me as it will cost more than what you sent in. Do not be stingy on this postage..
5. A sheet of paper with your:
--1. name,
--2. address,
--3. email,
--4. DG name,
--5. Number of seed packs sent, and number of seed packs wanted back
--6. Description of your garden, and yourself as a gardener and grower from seed (new, middle, experienced.)
--7. 10 things you want,
--8. 10 things you don't want, and
--9. a list of the seeds you are sending of all the loose packs that are not earmarked for another player.
6. Added Jan 9, 2008. Due to the sheer volume, I need to send these envelope or boxes back to you with delivery confirmations which cost an additional 75c.
7. Added Jan 11, 2008. Weezingreen's seeds came today! A big batch that cost her $26.00 to send. There are 26 people in this swap. Hmm. I am not saying send in a dollar postage to reimburse her postage costs -- do what your conscience says.
I think I have everything, but I'm sure I'll edit this at least once, so check back to this page right before you send your seeds. LOL!
*** end snippet**
Hi, rather than lose this valuable info that tcs has posted, I copied it into a word doc and saved it to my desktop. Much easier than trying to find the original posting :-)
Pam Sue.. Will dmail ya, but if folks haven't already got them , I think Weez was lookign for geranium species like that. I could be wrong, you'd have to ask Suzy, but ya might er mark them for her til ya can find out if they not gone.
Starlight, I would be happy for just the six strong back men! Everything else would fall in place!
Pamsue, I have given in to the temptation. You have dmail.
When is the last date for posting "haves" I finally have some spare time, and I am going through my stuff.
Michaela
The trade should be CLOSED on Friday.... the 18th.
Hi Wind, got you down for the alyssum!
tcs1366-I've marked you down for the salvia
Fairy, yayy!! Thank you! That's a gorgeous dahlia you've got there.
Starlight, on the six strong men-is that with or without shirts? ;> [just checking...]
FWIW, I've got the purple beautyberry-Callicarpa, and I really like it. Not fussy, nice lighter green leaves, no thorns. The berries look so cool this time of year after it's lost its leaves. I've seen the white one someplace and it's just as nice in white. Smaller berries than snowberry.
edit-for tcs-knew I"d forgotten to acknowledge something

Wind, that's lovely-isn't it a Tradescantia? Which one?
purple heart
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1160/
but I just read in plantfiles link above that the seeds are sterile!!!!!! I was so excited, as it was recently, I figured out how to harvest the seeds. Mine set seeds similar to ironweed with some fluff attached. I was sending seeds to Seandor and just had to dmail the news. Oh I just hate plants that have sterile flowers! uggggghhhhhh Is it worth trying the seeds?
Ohh, Tiger, tell me you asked her for the banana seeds... because I just know you'll share with me *batting eyes*... Yes, I admit it, I'm weak! Now do you see why I didn't sign up for this swap? LOL!
Since it actually set seeds, your plants might not be sterile after all. Sometimes it's just the hybrid cultivars that are sterile and propagated from cuttings. If you have plenty, you could test a few for germination by doing the "moist paper towel inside a baggie" thing.
