I also found them laying around. Not all of the gnats will be found in the solution, but in time they will be gone depending on how many you started with. if you have a lot of them, it will take longer than if you only have a few.

I recall that once I saw a fly catcher or wasp catcher that was in a small neck bottle but you put apple cider vinegar in it to attract gnats. Thanks for bringing it up, I will have to try this.
I have 4 cats and they don't bother the indoor plants except for one that will bite at the spider plantlets that drop down. However, when one of mine was a kitten she used to try and dig in a large pot. I cut a ring of wire, topped with bark and orange peels. The orange peels are repellent to cats. That did the trick, so maybe it could help you there?
