Suzy regarding the Chocolate Cosmos... Uggg.. i thought it was in Springhill, but it's in Michigan Bulb for $4.99
When i first started looking into the Chocolates last summer, i had read that they do not produce seed, or at least viable seed, and that you have to divide the plant.
Since i have credits with both Gurneys and Springhill -- i was planning on buying from them... but not sure about Mich.Bulb too.
oh well.
and -- this was the Green i was talking about http://springhillnursery.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_74164 Green Envy. pretty cool looking.
For those newly joined or who just don't feel like hunting thru the thread, here's a link to my updated list. I really don't have any wants, other than that I want to get rid of these seeds LOL
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4366891
Thanks Star :)
tcs, I've been eyeing Green Envy, too. I think i'm going to have to open the wallet and get a couple of echinaceas this year. There are too many pretty ones now.
As I understood it, Chocolate Cosmos isn't a Cosmos, it's a dahlia. It increases by tubers easily if you can dig them and store them. This is what I've heard, I don't know it because I can't get my paws on any!
Michigan bulb co has a tendency to rename plants to their choosing, so I wouldn't count on your getting whatyou think you're buying fromthem.
I had a friend who paid $50.00 for 10 last year (I was to get half) and never got delievery because there was a shortage or crop faillure or something.
Green Wizard, yeah, well...un, it's green. It's not new, tho, and there is seed floating around of it. (I don't have any, though, and I'm not sure what you'll get from the seed, just that I've seen packages in trade lists.)
Suzy
I take it back (but can't edit it out -- I am out of edits for the day already!!!)
I thought you said 'Green Wizard' (which I don't like) but you said 'Green Envy' which I very much DO like! My BIG mistake!!
You could toddle off to the perennial forum and ask the The Main Conehead, Big City Al, if he thinks it's a good one....the trouble is, they have silent lurking piggies over there, instead of the friendly noisy ones here.. You could decide to buy it on Saturday and get a SOLD OUT from Spring Hill LOL! They would have all been bought by DGers!
You could dmail him, tho :))
Suzy
Suzy -- it's not Green Wizard, it's Green Envy. dont even look a like.
and back to the cosmos http://www.thegardenhelper.com/cgi-bin/ubb/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=000067;p=0
i guess this was a reason i decided against it.... only a perennial to zone7.
that would be too much work ... i dont like a lot of extra work ... digging up tubers, etc.
is a stunning flower though.
Ah ... Yes, i know Al from the UMW forum... though it does seem he's everywhere great, knowledgeable guy
and I;m to cheap to drop$20 on a plant .. unless it's a really awesome Hosta or i've been knows to spend that on a rose bush. (but i'm a cheaper skate now ... since Dh isn't working... long story)
You saw my retraction, right TCS? It's wonderful!
Yeah for $20.00 I'd want to see the flower, and the plant, too.
These are usually propagated from tissue culture, and they can try to sell really small plugs without letting them get to size (to the size where they actually fill the size pot they are being sold in.)
Suzy
HaHa Suzy-were you making fun of me!! JK-I got some pink azalea seeds in a trade & it's A TON-way more than I need, so I figured why not share?? I'll mark Frau down for them..
Love the green envy too-I actually have a trade in line for 2008 after it blooms with someone here-not telling, then the piggies will come for it!! JK-if it goes through I'll let everyone know and try to share:)
CAN I JUST TELL YOU ALL-I was so excited last night-on my way home from a meeting (coming in a different way than normal) they are opening a new garden center by my house!!! YEAH!!! I'm not sure if it's a chain or not??-Jacob's I think it was called-it looks really nice though-even though I do tend to prefer the smaller mom and pop operations...
SUZY-aren't you proud-your instructions worked for my hyperlink list-THANKS
Suzy -- I'm getting my packet packed up....
be honest -- do you want any additional Fuschia 4-O'Clocks?
my "extras" to you are down to
3) Scarlet Milkweed
3) Mammoth Sunflower
2) GrandPa Ott
I'm going to the PO this morning as I have other "trades" I'm doing.
Hey everyone, FYI-all ech. can be propagated by root cuttings. I have increased all of the new unusual varieties I have by ripping off a piece of stem with even just the littlest piece of root on them. This is good knowledge for the spring. (Do you like how I lurk here? You know I want to join you, but I'm very proud of myself for holding back, but if I get a burst of energy to look through my seeds after the last 4 swaps-look out!)
Hey Fairy, I just noticed we are neighbors, Temperance is just up the road from me :o) Howdy
Connie
Good Mornin All
I sure have enjoyed this swap, but I guess I had better strart thinking about getting it in the mail. How long should we wait ya'll. I hate to wait until the last minute when theres a blizzard and the mail can't get through.
great information flowerhead. I plan to put it to use.
Now take the next step and join us at the trough.
mao
So tempting mao, but my sinuses are saying hold back baby!
I should clarify-you can also gently lift and cut the roots into pieces for more traditional root cuttings, but when the plant is new I have found that it does not harm them to just rip a [piece off when there's not a lot to give.
Flowerhead, it is really easy (on the first pass, the second one is much harder)
The truth is, there are a lot of good reasons to paw through that box - To remind yourself that spring really is just around the corner; to lighten up things so you can find what you need when you need it; to notice things that should be sown ASAP that you might otherwise have forgotten about; to pull out and keep safe any seeds that are definite MUST HAVES; and to trade something ugly in for something you'd like better.
For the First Pass, You Just:
1. Look for old ones
2. Look for ones you will never grow
3. Look for duplicates you have
4. Look for ones you really will just not grow.
5. Look for ones that you wonder why you even have them
6. Look for more duplicates
7. Look for ones that you know darn well you'll never sow.
S-T-O-P
Listen to this idea: For the seeds I want to keep but just can't get to this year, I'm making slips of paper that tell the recipient they are in charge of growing this seed and harvesting it and sending me seed of it back in one year for annuals and two years for perennials. That they are the Keeper of the Flame and had better not let me down. That I am EXPECTING some of that seed back :)) I also want baby pictures in my dmail.
Waddya think? Good idea?
Then ya gotta make hard decisions and those are best left for another day. LOL!
Suzy
Ansonfan, Now where do you live where there are BLIZZARDS? The mountain pass?
If you think you have everything together, go back and re read the instructions (first post) from the first thread and go ahead and send them in. I'm in the address exchange.
We've really enjoyed meeting you and hope you pop in to see what's going on every so often....are we saying good by? Do we kiss, or shake hands?
smooch! smooch!
Suzy.
Starlight;
I would be happy to provide a home for :

Morning everyone. For anyone interested, there might be a coneflower coop starting soon. She's checking into the popssibilities!
I'm liking the sound of that Cat!
Suzy-Thanks for the persistant prodding! (I am asking for it aren't I?). It is ever so tempting, but I'm just burnt out. Can't I just live vicariously through all your pigginess and be intensely envious when you all start sprouting your goods?!?!? LOL!!
Me too! I am so wanting to start a coneflower garden this spring! Going to try a few of the hybrid seeds but who knows what i'll end up with. I have 4 or 5 of the new ones I desperately want. The catalogs are starting to come in now, and I'm having a hard time not ordering!!!! Waiting to see how much cheaper a coop would be
Unfortunately, I have quite a few of the new ones, but I took out the labels for a lot of them! Woops! Some are easy to identify, but others, not so much! But I do so want that green envy myself! Well, keep us updated, Cat!
I have been wanting the green envie also, I can't remember where I read it or heard about it, but was told that it doesn't come true from seeds. Not sure if that is true or not, but I still want it rofl
HI Suzie, I got your message and I guess I'll be packing things up and getting them ready to go, but in the meantime if anyone would like any seeds please dmail me and I'll check in before I go to the PO. Thanks
PEPSI-HOW COOL-YOU REALLY ARE RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD-WHAT 15 MINS?? We are going to have to do the old fashioned "drinking tea in the garden" thing-or I guess in your case Pepsi... I'll Dmail ya!!
We do have one request for nice things that will self sow....I am going to be pulling from your things for her. (So you don't have to do a thing)
Suzy
who is "her" ?
Suzy -- my packet is en route.
and just a thought..... ... if anyone has A LOT of seeds they want to "dump" just because they can't sow them all, and want to 'give them to a good home' drop me a Dmail.
Terese
Hi everyone - sorry for the tardiness!! Blue - you're running into what a lot of folks have discovered in switching from film to digital cameras in garden pictures - the digitals don't always give you the color clarity that film does, so you find yourself twiddling dials and poking buttons to try to get it to work the way you want. I've found that flash is absolutely horrid, unless you're desperate. Which means you rely on ambient light. And a bright sunny day can also be horrid - washes everything out if you aren't twiddling and poking!
Blue, I won't hijack beyond this - we must chat! - Sissinghurst, in my opinion, changed everything. (well...that was pretty blunt, wasn't it?) There is a great "silvers" book that was published a couple years ago that is directly along the lines you are discussing: "Elegant Silvers" by Jo Ann Gardner. I admit to meeting her at the Chicago Flower show the year the book was published - pure serendipity as I was volunteering for my master gardener hours and she was a guest lecturer there to discuss her new book. She stopped by the spot where I was volunteering, and we had a nice short chat - she was very nice and open to chatting, even in such a crowded venue as that.
Wind - I've got some Breadseed Poppy (from Suzy - LOL!) that I can send on to you.
As for those TEENY seeds, I use a little magnifier that has a clamp on the other end. That way I can clamp it to the table next to me and twist it to where I want it. The added benefit is with the magnifier in between me and the seeds I don't accidentally breath on them - the mirror provides a barrier :) It's the same one I use when cross-stitching the eentsy patterns I like. (I use a toothpick, never thought of a needle! The blunted-end ones used for some crafts are perfect for that!)
