Gessiegail! Where your ears burning? The lady that went to your house the other day from the club LOVED your plants!!! She had many wonderful things to say about your flowers etc. I missed you at the meeting tonight!

I think I am going to have to get some lights. I just prefer the sun in the windows, lighting is so big and bulky. I am so picky! There is less sun in my sunroom in winter though. I want to get some new plants like streps and things that are different. Wish there was a store for them. We all hope you bring things to the show and sale! We had a nice time tonight.

Sally,
Sorry I missed the meeting last night. I had two space heaters going on the front porch with all my tropicals and couldn't leave the house when the heaters are on. You will never be sorry that you are getting lights. IT will be a new beginning for you and growing.

I think Marjorie and some of the girls maybe coming over Saturday just to show them my set up (I didn't say my plants .......lol)

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Tnanks MrsBonnie! Frieda's bloom color is just beautiful!

South, TX

Yes, she just emailed and asked who can go to your house! I don't always feel good (chronic fatigue) so I guess I can't take the chance and go with the group. I would love to see though!

I am looking for lights. I am picky on the look. All are metal. I want cherry wood shelves!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, are you crazy woman (LOL).......cherry wood with dirt and water>?

Sorry you can't come but maybe sometime when you are feeling up to it, you will come over and play with plants.

I have some of those 'fancy' lights that I let a friend talk me into. I bought them at Guess Lighting in Corpus and it doesn't have half the good light as the old metal ones do with the hoods to aim the direction of the light. AND it took two to a shelf with 4 shelves and it was big bucks with no BANG!

South, TX

I just want them to be pretty and match my furniture, even my sunroom has darker furniture.

I did have lights on wood shelves years ago. They look so pretty!

(Zone 1)

I think Cherry or Mahogany would be absolutely beautiful for plant shelves. I would love it! I wonder if you could somehow use those under cabinet lights on a cherry wood book shelf? I can just picture some pretty wood shelves with lights and pretty cache pots with plants sitting down inside them. Now I'm a huge Klutz so I would probably be spilling water and soil all over and ruining such nice shelves. I am forever knocking over plants! It seems like I knock at least one off a shelf each day! Might as well chain myself to the vacuum cleaner!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

In my last home, I had bookshelves built on two walls from floor to ceiling and had gro lights put under the top shelf of each shelf. But the shelves were just painted white.

(Zone 1)

I really like that idea! I can envision an entire room - wall to wall bookcases ... uh, I mean ... plantcases - with lights and beautiful plants on every shelf!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, it was pretty and it was in the dining room. The plants and lights made each meal even better!

(Zone 1)

I bet it was pretty! I would love to do something like that!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Sounds so charming and inviting :)
I have dark wood in my bedroom and I love it. Light wood is pretty too but there is something about that dark wood, especially with pretty flowers adding color :)

Yes, and the lights illuminating the beautiful wood as well as the plants/flowers!

Lin,Love the chiritas! Mine just now is getting a bud.
Are the jewel orchid hard to grow?I think I was reading you can plant them in a terrerium? I want to get one but I'm not having good luck growing orchids but in a terrerium I think would be great. Can't wait to see your blooms! Your other orchid is lovely.

I just love those blooms, Lin, on the orchid and , on my way back from my daughter's house, I go through Seguin and she had them in baskets last time I was there (the jewel orchid, that is)

The little glasses with the gorgeous Cherita's are adorable!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, I grew a lot of chirita tamiana from seed. You are welcome to a couple of them.

South, TX

I will have to try seed. I have not done that.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love to grow from seed, but, as you know, there is little in the gesneriad family that comes true from seed. That doesn't slow me down as I love to see how each one blooms. I order my seed from The Gesneriad Society (if you belong) or you can get some mighty good seeds from Mauro from Brazil. Let me find his site. He has great viable seeds for sale for 3.00 a packet and you better find someone or some people to share with you as there are a lot of seeds for one person.

Don't worry about it, thank you. I don't have room to expand too much. I will just get a few more plants, I can't get tons more.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, my free seed packet from joining the Gesneriad Society is here.... Now what do I do with these TINY little things??!!

(Zone 1)

LOL Diane! When I got mine a few months ago I planted them, they sprouted but, alas they were some of the seedlings and plants that have died on me recently!

Gessiegail is the seed queen! She has grown so many things from seeds, and they have prospered and flourished and grown into beautiful mature plants ... I bet she can give you some tips!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

you are always so nice to me, Lin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. 1 part AV soil-less mix (I now use half canadian peat moss and the av soil less mix to make one part).....then 1 part perlite...........1 part big vermiculite
2. Use very warm water to get the solo pots of mix throughly wet........then put the heavy solo pots on lots of newspaper for at least an hour to let the extra water run through.
3. Take your thumb and pointer finger and lightly rub together the seeds of one kind and spread it on the top of the moist mix.
4. Then take the finest small vermiculite (you can get it at Walmart but is much smaller than regular vermiculite) and just cover the seeds barely.
5. Take an old bottle with a sprayer of warm water and gently spray the seeds and vermiculite.
6. Put a dome on them and don't take it off until the seeds are germinated!!!

************When they have germinated .............all your solo cups.......then come back and we can go from there.........quit taking that dome off everyday........if you do you are going to have to water ONLY FROM THE BOTTOM ALWAYS.

"quit taking the dome off every day"-- Where are you hiding to watch me do that???LOL ONE tiny little seed per cup? And didn't I ask you before if your solo cups are the paper kind? I CANNOT find the little cups anywhere!!! aggravating! Last time I looked for the paper ones they didn't even have those anymore.

(Zone 1)

Diane: I have a bunch of those little clear plastic cups from jello pudding that I've been saving and will NEVER use! If you want them I will gladly mail them to you for postage! You would have to poke or burn holes in them for drainage.

My husband eats a lot of that pudding! We do recycle but I've got a bunch that are stuck in a box out in the shed. They'd be perfect for cuttings or seeds! I've used them for that purpose in the past but I don't plan on doing anything with cuttings or seeds for quite awhile ... no time! I will go out tomorrow and count them and see how many are there!

You are welcome to them if you want them!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Diane............that was a typo on my part..........you want quite a few in each solo cup of seeds of one kind..........(or if they are mixed, just put a few in each pot)

Go to the grocery store and look for the little cups (plastic) that fit in a dispenser in the bath room for rinsing your mouth out after you brush your teeth................3 oz...........you are in Lubock so I know you can find them.............they come either 100 to a pack or 150.........for practically nothing..........

I just got my first bloom on Chirita Longangensis. I couldn't capture the true color on my camera. It is a very delicate shade of light lavender. I really like the color. The plant is very small and I will have to look her up and she if she gets to be a big girl or not. Lou

Strep Hera has just started blooming and she has two different blooms. I like them both. I got this great plant from Gessiegale, so I knew she would be real pretty. . Lou

I am so anxious to start seeds for some of these species and named chiritas soon.

Don't you love Hera? I was missing her so much and then found a big baby growing from a leaf and she was marked "hera" so I am a happy camper.

I always think I am tired of a plant until she is missing and then I find I start growing her again!!!!

About 8 months from now I am going to think I never want to see a strep again as I ordered 50 leaves I didn't have and the nice man sent 73 leaves. They are all rooting right now so streps will be plentiful this spring and summer!!
