CLOSED: Mentor - Newbie Seed Swap.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

No problem, I hope these guys are also interested in heirloom veggies as well. I just commented on that in the other discussion. It's important to get more home gardeners interested in growing these things and saving the seed and sharing it with other gardeners. I see you have 2 newbies in zone 7, so I'd be happy to mentor either one. This is a "pay it forward" for me :)
Rosewyd, go to your preferences and make your zone change in there.

rosewynd you are more than welcome.

Doccat, I love heirloom veggies, we do need to start saving these seeds and passing them around. I just got two catalogs that are heirloom plants only.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I order from both Bakers and Seed Saver Exchange and there are others seed companies out there that have heirloom varieties to play with. :) Plus other gardeners willing to trade seed. There are excellent books available on how to save seed as well as the net. A gold mine of information and a lot of DGs are old hands at it and more than willing to share the information.

merry christmas everyone

And you as well. :*)
Seasons Greetings To All!!!!!!

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

doccat~Thanks for mentoring me! I am trying wintersowing this year for the first time. I DO have a veggie garden though and have had some luck with easy stuff like tomatoes and beans from seed using conventional methods...I mean, beans...the easiest stuff:-)
As a matter of fact, I was just perusing a seed catalog with lots of heirlooms, and would love to try some. Never collected seeds from my previous veggies. I guess it wouldn't matter since the hybrids don't come true from seed anyway...but would seriously like to learn to harvest heirlooms and to be able to help pass along the seeds to others! Very exciting prospect!!
Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey guys,
I'm a total newbie in Zone 8b, I would love a mentor if my zone is still available!

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Welcome James and Merry Christmas!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi James,

You're in! and you have me .. d-mail me and tell me a bit about yourself, what kind of plants you are interested in and start watchingwhat the sun does where you will be planting plants. What I mean by that, is where is the shade and where is the sun throughout the day. Most plants like morning sun and afternoon shade in our zone because it can get so hot in the afternoon.

In my garden I have shade in the morning on the SE side and shade in the afternoon on the SW side. The rest is in full sun most of the day.

Hi, I am in 8b and could mentor someone in this zone. I haven't had a lot of success in veggies, but have some knowledge and seeds to share for perennials and annuals.

Maybe someone could mentor me in the veggie department?

Molly
:^)))

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey Molly, I bet doccat will be more than happy to! :)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Good Christmas morning everyone!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I will be the 2nd mentor for zone 6 :-)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I'll be happy to mentor MollyMc..her zone is actually very close to mine. This one lists as 7b, but the micro climate is closer to an 8 and I can "fudge" some things just by doing a bit of winter protection.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Y'all are on the list .. keep checking it for new additions .. Still need a newbie for zone 9!

X

Hi, I would like to be a mentor, one map has me in zone 5 and one says zone 6. So I have plants for both zones and just hope for the best. LOL.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi Beebe, You're about 60 to 70 miles northeast of me and that area is a hard one, kind of like on the cusp. You could probably do a 5b easily or a little 6a. Glad you are here.

Welcome Seandor, MollyMC, tcs, James, Tammy, Doccat, Naplesgirl, Lindagm, Jordankittyjo, Jsxtiger, tggfisk, rosewynd. Wow we are starting to fill up. Great.

Merry Christmas all.

Anza, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh, Seandor, Thank you!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

What fun this is gonna be! I am lucky that my mentor is within driving distance, too! :)

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Isn't this great. I'm just 6 miles off hwy 44. Gonna have a good time meeting up somewhere and tradin plants and seeds and most of all learning and making new friends.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Amen Sister! Lets get ready to rumble! HA HA HA

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

This is going to be so much fun. Thanks for taking this and us newbie seed starters on:-) Hope everyone had a wonderful day!

(jax) Dundalk, MD(Zone 7a)

And........let the games begin! Thank you!

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi, I'm in
Zone 8 and noticed there was no more room to give my name, etc. I am a newbie and would love to have the help. Please tell me if I can join

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

THANK YOU SOO MUCH!! I have already learned so much!!

Seandor-you had me crackin' up-LOL:) I didn't know what PLMK meant for a long time either-I finally had to ask someone....I tell ya, you start to feel old when you don't get the "lingo" anymore (and I'm only 31)..

I can't thank everyone on DG for being so helpful, especially my AWESOME mentor!!
Stacey

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

I'll be a mentor--I'm zone 7a--though I have only lived in the NE for 2 1/2 years. But I do love growing things from seed.

West Norriton, PA(Zone 6b)

Great idea X! I'm a newbie in zone 6b. This will be my first year winter sowing and I am planning to build several new garden areas in the spring ... having a mentor would be great.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

wow I just followed the link from the composting thread see what I have been missing....
I lived in Illinois for 47 years and just moved to Texas in July.
I have grown up gardening ...g-ma did it, parents did it, and I do it
but I am re learning here in Texas since it is of course different ground then I am used to.
I don't have any seeds to offer right now ...
but I am willing to help out if I can ...learning through others experience is a great way share and grow plants and knowledge. *S*

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I will be a mentor and I live in Zone 4b. Steve
Oops I am not a seed mentor. I thought it was for generalized landscaping help. I don't grow much from seed but native plants.

WOW, it is great to see so many helpful people out there! :)

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

X, If we don't get another mentor for 6 I'll be happy to take Michaeljo, too.

Steve, landscaping is still very helpful and native plants are very vital. Stick around please.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

X - I can be a mentor for zone 8 ;-D
