The Newbie Mentor Match up is closed for now. It will reopen again in March.
This idea comes from the Newbie Welcome Wagon Seed thread. I though it would be nice for those new to gardening and growing plants from seeds to have a mentor.
What I will do is match up zones. Say a Newbie who lives in zone 8 with a mentor who lives in zone 8. Once they are matched up, the partners get in touch with each other. The mentor sends seeds to their partner and explains how to grow them.
The main thing for mentors to remember is stay away from information overload and send seeds that are essentially no fail and easy to grow. Stick to annuals and something that makes seeds freely so they will have something to trade with. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to send a newbie hard coat seeds that need to be nicked and soaked.
Because of a better response than I thought .. I'll just keep adding names to zones so let me know if you want to be added. Reply to this thread (please don’t d-mail me) and indicate your Zone and if you are a Newbie or a Mentor.
If you don't know what your zone is, check the picture below.

Im in 8b, southeast Louisiana, and a newbie. Just started getting seed this fall. Everyone has been so generous. Next fall or whenever I want to share the seed my lovely plants have given me.
Thanks,
Linda
I am also a newbie and am in Zone 6. Are you setting a limit as to what you consider someone being a newbie? I have learned a lot since joining DG, but still have a TON to learn! Thanks for the starting this thread!
Happy Holidays!
Tammy
Hello Linda and welcome. We will look forward to having you share with us next year. I hope you enjoy all the seeds from this mentor swap.
Robin

From the brrrrrr cold ends of 7a, I remain a learning newbie.
p.s. Wish me luck...I plan to winter sow for the first time.
I concur with the BRRRRRRRRRRR at 25º! Good luck on your Polar Planting!
Thanks Robin. Is it spring yet? I want to start my garden...lol
Merry Christmas
Linda :o)
Linda, go ahead and start it now. You can do some winter sowing or you could start getting the beds ready for spring. Your spring will get here quicker than mine will I bet.
I bet it would feel like Spring to us if we were there now! :)
Anywhere south would feel like spring to me. heck anything above 50 degrees would feel like spring.
Especially now that it is freezing out there! BRRRRRRRR
how much snow did you all get last night. we just got a dusting. my sister in kansas said at 5:00 last night they had 8 inches and it was still falling heavily. earlier that day she couldn't even see the house across the road, it was white out conditions there.
I want spring now.
all we had was a dusting as well. DITTO to wanting Spring NOW!
I am looking at some pics tropicman sent me, WOW!
X, are we just going to get with our newbie and do our thing or are we going to send stuff through you.
Hello this is a great thread!!
Good Luck!!!
Seasons Greatings!!!
Kim

Shoot, it is a whole web site through photo bucket! LOL
Hey, will you be taking seed donations?
Sure, I think that would be a great idea. Thanks
Cool :*)
Rob .. one on one .. nothing goes thru me .. .. if you know any zone 7 ask them to join .. we have 2 newbies wanting a mentor and one in zone 9 wanting a newbie.
X
Ok, I will ask around and try to find some one to help out.
I posted it on a couple of other threads as well. :)
I'm in 7b, don't have tons to trade right now, but I'm have some things and I can certainly offer advice and hand holding......LOL I can mentor somebody who's interested in that.
Great doccat, So glad you stopped by.
I'm a newbie in zone 6- may I join?
Oh NO, going from zone 8-6 is totally bakards! LOL
No, I'm not zone 8.
The USDA sites all SAY I'm zone 8, but I'm not..... I'm a 6.
And I can't figure out how to change it.
