Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

RJ....32 deg Noooooooooo! I'm not ready!!!!!!! Guess we'd better get on the ball!

Been really busy, I haven't even had the news on! Tommow I need to make one more trip into Houston for a gift, so Fri I guess we'll be hanging the plastic on the hut and putting up the canvas top, opening up the canopy curtains and moving stuff around. Good thing I rested this morning!!!!! Grrrrr!!!!

Glad everyone is OK! Take care of yourselfves!!!!!! Thanks RJ for the update on the weather!!!!!!!!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

And WE are having torrential rains with a high of 68!!!! Fire in woodstove all day! COLD!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Clean up is going good in most places. They are still pullin people out of ditches though. This morning a bus went into a biiiig ditch near me. I saw it on my way home. The hill was really slick and I think the driver the brakes too hard. The ditch is so big the bus wasn't even sticking out on the road. Luckily no one was hurt.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hi ya'll! Guess we got out of Colorado at just the right time...we had a bit of snow...just enought to let us know what we left behind, but they are getting hammered now. I don't miss it. Yes, its beautiful...until you have to drive in it, or clean up the damage from the weight of it. Kinda takes away from the "Kinkade" beauty, ya know?

Boy, you Texans are getting a real roller coaster ride! Up, down, hot, cold...what next? See even the weather can't figure out what to do with ya'll! Ha ha! Christi my dear, I am working on a d-mail to you. Randy - been missing ya friend! Last night the moon was a Cheshire cat, and I swear it winked at me! Glorious skies, so clear you can see the Milk in the Milky Way...you would love it! I think the Hawaii idea is fabulous - yes, Christi will get hooked I'm sure - but you have no excuse for not visiting out here!

Jeanne - Don't try to do too much all at once! You have time, so don't rush all that heavy stuff - and make Chris help!!

It's going to take a while to catch up on all the threads - you guys have been busy! But I will be doing the best I can. Oh, Pepper...do be careful!
Meanwhile - AaaaaLoooooHaaaa and Yokwe to all you wonderful tropikids!!! It is good to be back among you - even if it is only cyberly (is that a word???)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I've seen lot's of words that are unique to DG.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Speaking of starry skies, I believe you have front row seats to the The Geminids meteor shower tonight and early morning out there in the Pacific. I've camped on the beach in Kekaha Kauai, it was a spiritual experience!

The bubble popped, and cold is coming, but like LouC says...it keeps bouncing back up. We have the thick cloud cover to thank for that, but it appears to be clearing out on saturday and that means it drops quick to cold. I'm hoping they change that 32F low for saturday and sunday night. Even still, things are well soaked.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

He will help!!!! Got to water, also! Gonna clean out the fireplace and get some wood! Get ready to bundle up for a couple of days!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Oooooh...gotta check on the Geminids. I will let you know if we get a show! Got clouds moving in, but lots of wind - so they may blow away. Got the lights up on my palms yesterday, and last night my daughter and I just sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance.
Get the coccoa and marshmallows ready, maybe a hot buttered rum...there are some good things about the cold.

Definately! We've got plenty of cocoa and DS got a nice Irish Creme flavoring that he adds and makes it so nice!!!! Gonna light the fireplace! Cozy!!!!!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

We turn the a/c down waaay low, cuddle under blankets, pour out the coccoa (try it with Bailey's!), and watch an old movie by the lights on the Christmas tree and lots of candles...not quite the same as a snowy day, but fun nonetheless.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Never made it to 70deg. today...rain, humid and cold. BIG fire in the woodstove and making fruitbread.

Where am I?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I know where it's not making 70F tommorrow...Snow and Ice Pellets for the New Jersey, New York area. We just cancelled 250 flights for tomorrow out of the area.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Strange world! Very unusual weather for the South! It's been awhile since it's been this warm here this time of year! Sure glad I'm not going to NJ or NY! SIL just got back from NY not long ago! His family is from there.

You wait til I leave before making fruitbread????? And here I thought you were my friend! Harrumph!! Hiya girlfriend! Stay warm (now that is not something I ever thought of saying to someone in Hawaii!)...oh, can I have a repeat on that wonderful granola mix recipe? I really want to give it a go, it was delicious.

Well Randy, since you cancelled all those flights, and now have nothing to do tomorrow - why not hop on down here? ☺ Can you tell I am going to be a pest about this? I want to show you my lagoon first hand!

Jeanne - I have a feeling that weather is just going to keep getting stranger for a while. It will certainly keep life interesting!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Definately! I don't mind cold for a couple of days, but 32 even for a few hrs can really do the plants in fast!!!! They just can't take it! And I'm sure between now and March 21st we will have many more of those days, so might as well get ready! I knew it was coming.....just wish it would have waited until after Christmas! LOL! I was trying to focus on Christmas.....and am almost done!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, a wet 32 plants can take much better than a dry frost 32F. Water insulates the plants. As a matter of fact - if it's dry and 32F is forecasted I water thuroughly. It does help, but usually works if it didn't dip for too long...

Don't have to twist my arm Shari! Shall I send you my vacation weeks..heheheheh....darn ...I let my passport expire..

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Get a new one!!!!

Yeah, I'll be sure to water before then! On FOX they forecasted 38 and 39 so I'll wait and see what they say on Channel 11 / 13. They'll still need some added warmth. That's getting cold. My "houseplant type plants" on the patio will need the warmth one way or another! But then it is DEC. so it's time!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Great...!!! This must be some seriously unpredictable weather they've had this week.

Well Weather.com has the night temps the same, but I did just notice they raised the temp friday to 69F.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Well at least it will put people in the mood to shop! It'll seem more like Christmas!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Most definately - get it renewed! And let me know your weeks! You just think I'm kidding! Got a snorkel and mask with your name on it already!

You guys be careful not to get a headache tryin to figure out what the weather's gonna do.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

We don't have to try.....this change in weather just automatically gives you a migraine......for real! People with sinus problems / allergies just go bananas with this constant change! Suffer big time!!!!!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

When we sailed and obsessed about the weather...we would sing:

"Whether it's cold or whether it's hot, we're going to have weather whether or not".

Granola = very creative here...

8-12 cups of oats (not quick) (I like Scotch Oats as they contain varied grains).

Put them into a roasting pan and add 1/3 - 1/2 cup of all or any of the following
chopped walnuts
slivered almonds
sesame seeds
pumpkin seeds
sunflower seeds

Mix 1/3Cup Canola Oil (or almond oil or walnut oil) with 1/3C Honey. Add Cinnamon and/or vanilla and/or your favorite spice. Heat and then mix with the Grains and Nuts.

Roast in the oven on a medium heat until roasted to your taste. We like them nice and toasty.

Now you can add raisins, dried cranberries, dried dates...waddevah.

We eat this half/half with more stoic cereals like Organic Shredded wheats. or other healthy and tastless cereals!!! I just put yogurt and milk and fresh fruit on mine.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds good and healthy!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

did you see any meteors last night?

While you tropical folk are amused at our Texas fretting and plotting of visiting cold fronts, not all of our inhabitants in the garden are opposed to a little cold. These are still going strong and have reached a foot long, very glad I put him in the dirt!

That flower is beautiful, RJ. Looks like an orchid to me??? Are all those bloom stalks from one plant?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

And I think this is the closest to yellow sun we're going to see today

Hi Jenny,
it's a Clerodendrum Wallichii, and they are all from one plant. It's a shrub, and there's more on the other side, and in the lower branches. They take the're sweet time, they were budding when Shari was here

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Black eyed susan vine? Lovely summery colors, glad your garden is still going strong.

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Beautiful, looks like a shade lover? Thought it was an orchid!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It does seem to do well in the shade. It gets bright light. Clerodenrums are great.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Randy...Ms/Mr. Wallichii is a travelling fool....but I can think of worse things to wander around my garden. Mine grew out of the pot, into a bit of soil and is there for GOOD!!!

Nice blooms!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

How are things in Kihei today? Sun is out even if briefly here.

Yes what is weather like? it is almost 6 in the morning here and I can see a small shaft of sunlight peaking through although it has rained on and off for the last 24hours.Friday here ...the weather over your way is all over the news.
Rj are those brown eyed susans all yellow? or do you have the orange one too, I spend forever pulling them out here such happy little flowers but they strangle everything in sight and pop up everywhere. I like to stand looking up into my Angels too :)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Of course Randy's clero's are beautiful...so are Carol's... they just enjoy teasing me from afar! Mine will grow...they will, they will, they will!!!

No Meteors...clouds and big winds. Went inside and watched King Kong. Talked to the bride this morning, and she and groom are waxing euphoric about the wonderful wedding...it really was perfect. So happy to hear a lot of good things about a wedding - many brides tend to complain alot. Not Amy...full of gratitude and happiness. Yeahhhh!

Sun is out this am...did some minimal work in the garden. Carol - I got those seeds and plants all tucked into new beds...wish me luck!

Jenny, how ya doin?? You are going to have an island addict at your door step soon ya know. Christi was actually born with sea water in her veins - she just didn't know it until recently! ☺ Give my best to Braveheart and Candy!

Howdy friend Chrissy! How are things down under? Your rain will soon be causing a bloom explosion I expect!

It is so good to talk to everyone again!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I haven't seen a clerodendrum that's not a traveling fool. Actually I haven't seen this one pop up somewhere else yet.
yes..it's a brown/black eyed susan vine..and yes, I've noticed that I'm picking it out of everything. To think it was a 6 inch cutting last spring. I'm actually using it as a protecter for the Jade and Beaumontia vines that also inhabit the ladder.. My front line frost protecter!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

And mine was at least 15" with all of 20 or so blooms. whaaaaaa.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Looocy!? What happened? Did you lose your's or something? (My little Lucy is sitting here keeping me adorable company!)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Talking about my blackeye Susan, Shari. Even when I have the exact plant that Randy has there is no comparison. Where is everyone tonight?

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Aloha! Just logged on - bet you've all gone now, it's only 6pm here.
Yes Shari, I am getting very excited about Christi and Mikes visit, won't be long now -
