Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

WOW that is perty!

Robbi~ thanks! I'll have to pick your brain..uhm your diary tomorrow, got to get the pumpkins ready. But you will enjoy your Summer Snow obedient plant, I W/S'ed them last year. They were outstanding and gorgeous planted next to my snapdragons.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Do you have pics?? That page is sorely lacking photos :o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Those are gorgeous! Robbi, I think you deserve the title of Seed Empress! LOL

distantkin - I have a couple of questions about your WS entries. I think it's the same question garden6 was getting at....maybe.

Take Bachelor's Buttons as the example.....

In the WS dbase you have made an entry, but it doesn't show when you sowed or when germination occured. Here's the entry in question: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/ws/view.php?wsid=86 Based on your response to garden6's inquiry above I went to your Journal to see if the dates were in your Journal. I see you have a Propagation Journal but it appears to be private as I see nothing when I click on it even though it says there are 255 items in that Journal. In summary, I am unable to tell what your result was in sowing Bachelor's Buttons.

Now for my questions:
1. Should WS Dbase entries be made if no dates are entered? I mean how useful is the entry if you cannot tell what the results were.
2. Is your Propagation Journal private? and is this where you were referring garden6 to for details on the dates of your wintersowing?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just now working on my sowing timetable for this year and want to try some winter sowing for the first time. I have limited seed for some of the species and thus am looking at all kinds of sources to see what the success rates are for winter sowing vs indoor sowing.

Many thanks!

Lang~ yes, I wanted to have a better idea of the dates..... as for me, for example my coneflowers did not flower the first year. Soooo I did some research, and could only find that some who W/S'ed their coneflowers"early enough" got some blooms the first year... just wanted a better idea of what's early enough. LOL!

Lang~I W/S'ed my bachelor buttons early Jan with germination on 3/12. They bloomed nicely during the Summer. Then I gave them a haircut and they rebloomed in the Fall. Their colors were more intense in the Fall. Hope that helps some with the bachelor buttons.

Robbie~Sorry, I don't have a digital pic of the Summer Snow. I, as well, couldn't open your journal for the dates for your W/Sing entries....but your results are definitely impressive! BOUQUETS to you!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

thx Garden6 - I did find your Bachelor Buttons entry very helpful! Thanks for the tip about shearing them for a fall rebloom! Did you sow them in situ or in container/flat outside for transplant to desired location?

Lang ~ You're welcome! I sowed them in a milk jug and then transplanted out to the desired location. As a matter of fact, in one garden bed, I relocated them twice after the first transplant and they didn't skip a beat. ;0)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

wonderful.....thx Garden!!

You're welcome!! ;0)

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

lngbr. -So sorry for the confusion-I don't know why you can't see my journal because I have it marked as open but that won't matter anyway because the things in my journal are for this year that I am sowing now...the items listed in the database are items from my grandmothers journal. She didn't keep dates and when I asked her about it she didn't understand why it mattered if she sowed them in Dec or Feb-it was still below freezing. So that was the way she thought-and that is why I am WS some of the same items so I can add dates to the database. I still posted the information so people would know that it can be done in this zone. Grandma never WS after the temps began to warm up. She said "why would you? Then it isn't 'Winter Sowing' as you call it, it would be 'Spring Sowing' " LOL thats Grandma!! LOL

So as for not adding dates-here in MN it is pretty irrelevant on sow time...as is germination time because we stay below freezing from Nov until at least the end of March and then we still get many frost-the last one being in May...so putting the seeds in the snow bank in Dec-is no different than putting them in there in Feb.
But like I said, this year I have added my germination date, the amount and will have how they were sowed. I will contact Dave to see why my journal is not opening even though for this question, it doesn't matter :o)
Robbi

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Robbi - many thanx for the quick reply. That makes perfect sense to me now. Your grandma and mine would have hit it off real well!

As for your Journal viewing, I *can* see your default journal, so maybe there is a setting on each journal for private? I'm not sure.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Let me check :o)

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

I clicked on the allow button for my prop. journal. It was already set like that but I re did it just in case-LOL
If not, I will ask admin for help. Let me know

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Hmmmm...maybe I have a clue! I click on your Prop journal and it does take me to a page that says "distantkin's Journal Summary View by Category". Then it says "No categories found!" Maybe Dave has the journal view feature set up so that if you don't have a category attached to entries then the journal view appears blank. Could that be it.....that you don't have categories set up your individual items in this particular journal? Just thinking out loud here. Maybe I'm out in left field.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

I think you may be right-I have to add categories-Let me try that :o)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

That worked! I see "Polar Planted 2007/2008" as a category with entries under it. Yay! Mystery solved.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

LOL-glad it worked...now it is a matter of moving everything-UGH...only on the C's-LOL
all for you langbr :o)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

(((Robbi)))

Gosh I just read the old original threads on this project to get caught up with how it all started and what the plan is going forward. After reading it all, I'm glad I came late to the party! tee hee hee

Not to stir up old stuff but after reading the previous 2 threads I'm still not clear.... did we decide that "winter sowing" had to be covered? Is sowing in flats or milk jugs or whatever uncovered not considered winter sowing? Also is sowing in situ not going to be considered winter sowing? From the UK Seed Site he says this: "These winter-sown annuals can be sown in situ (in the place they are to flower), or they can be sown in cells, pots or trays to be put into their flowering positions in the spring." To me winter sowing is the act of sowing seed outdoors in the late autumn or winter. Period. Covered, uncovered, in situ, in coldframes are all just methods of winter sowing.

btw....I was thrilled to see you all link to the UK Seed Site. I've had that site as one of my favorites on my DG homepage for 3 yrs now. He's got good stuff there and I'll be thrilled when I can find all the same sort of info here on DG and not have to leave DG to get that info.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

LOL-I think to each his own really. If it is sown outside in the winter, it is winter sowing. There are many opinions on this.
Sowing in your basement is not winter sowing :o)
It is about what seeds will germinate even if mother nature batters them in the winter.
Sowing in situ is not considered winter sowing by most even though I think it is. If a seed grows in situ-it will grow in container. The difference is that in a container you don't have to worry about weeds and critters etc. Seeds that are surface sown are harder to sow in situ as they can get carried away by snow/rain.

This is just my opinion remember. I really think that if it survives chilly MN winters-no matter where it is outside (except indoors because mother nature can't be nasty to it) it is winter sown :o)

So I agree with you. There are other's that not only feel they own the term (this is why for some time I called it polar planting-but have decided that I can say WINTER SOWING all I want :oP) but the idea of scattering seeds in containers (we had better not say milk jugs-LOL) and that if you put the two together-that is WS...well I agree with our British friends-could be because that is my home-WS is just what it says, sowing in the winter :o)
(OK-people don't throw things at me-I did say it was my opinion :o) )

I agree about having it here at Dave's-we have the best PLantfiles here because of wonderful gardeners...so why not have the best information about winter sowing and propagation.

BTW-I am still adding my WS info to my files-LOL...didn't know there was so much :o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Robbi, if that seed can survive grow after a MN winter, the technique can be anything it wants! I see it as getting a jump on spring. I know that what I start in the house, those not to be mentioned jugs, seed flats, cold frame etc..will make it much easier for me come spring when things really start to jump. And the seed starting allows me to get my play in the dirt fix. :)
It's still a little early for me to do much, I know from past experience just about how far I can push the envelope to get veggies in the ground. I'm still learning about flowers, but getting smarter all the time, thanks to the great folks here on DG!

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Just checking in-I saw on the WS thread that we have seedlings coming up in Texas-ZONE Envy!!!
Please as your babies come up-please please please enter the data in the database "o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Well, I got most of my seed into my journal, my eyes are crossing....LOL Still to early for me to start. Couple more weeks and I can start to ROCK! I do have some hellebore seeds I want to get in and outside to the garage this week. Pretty slim pickins..........sigh

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

Well I haven't planted mine yet. I go to a seed exchange next week and then will start thinking about it. distantkin we have a lot of winter yet to come. Plenty of time to plant yet. The seed exchange is from the other garden site and is in Apple Valley if you are interested send me a dmail.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Thanks zen!!
I don't go to the other site anymore after the WS mess. So I didn't know! I would love to go but I have so many seeds as it is!! If you want-I can send you some seeds so you don't have to drive-LOL
What frightens me is I KNOW there is a lot of winter yet-and I have already sown over 250 containers! I have so many more to go so I may be having my own little round up here at my house for anyone interested-LOL
You may have to come rescue me zen-or maybe-WS very little and come take some of mine in the Spring-LOL

doc-ZONE ENVY!!!
Robbi

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I am just waiting for Spring when Robbi is in great need to get rid of some of her seedlings! HA HA HA When you gonna show us a pic of all those containers? LOL

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

They are under snow but if it melts like it did yesterday I might get one today-LOL

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I just can't get over all your snow!

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

It is 39º here and melting fast. It would be faster if it wasn't also foggy.

I don't need any more seeds I am hoping to get rid of some. I mainly am going since it is such a good group of people and it is fun to connect with them. I couldn't get to the fall plant exchange so I haven't seen them since the spring one.
Keep an eye open for the spring plant one and you can bring some of your extra winter sowing. Since this one is south of Mpls the next one will be closer to you.

Are we talking about the same site? I missed a winter sowing mess. I am talking about The Minnesota forum at the Gweb. It is the only forum that I check out there because I don't like all of the pop ups they get now.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

It is 66º here and I am LOVING it!

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

Crazy weather here again. Last week single digits & 14" of snow. Today around 60. Only snow left now is where they plowed the driveway. It feels like spring. Not complaining but it's weird.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

It hit 71º here today and loved every second of it! But it will get cold again and I hate it! Not much snow at all to speak of, though.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Spring here, too- it's wonderful out!! 57 degrees and it's almost 10pm in Jan
:D I feel like I've been transplanted to CA

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

It is still 63º here! Oh what I wouldn't give to live in a tropical climate, though! :)

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4b)

I have started page 3 so everyone move on over.

Saint Cloud, MN(Zone 4b)

Yes, there sure is...there just isn't a direct link to it. Here is a link

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/ws/

We are still working on getting a direct way to get there, but for now-this is all we have :o)
