Also bumping! :)
Winter Sowing Database page 2
Robbi, you have been missed! So glad to have you back girl! :)
(((HUGS))) Misty-I was wondering where you were all day-I have been playing on here for hours and no Misty to chat with :o)
Well, we had started on the new part of the green house, then my oldest son's GF called and they wasn't able to fly all the way home, so we had to go get their vehicle out of the air plane hanger, then drive about 40 miles or so to get them and bring em home! LOL Shameful to have your own plane and not be able to fly it all the way home! ☺
Is there a link for the database other than in this thread? This thread has been quiet and I couldn't remember where to find the database.
Donna
No link yet...Dave is planning on adding one-I hope soon, I keep sending people back here. I will keep bumping it until he does :o)
Thanks for the info. :-)
I just looked through the database and saw all the work that has been done. It's a great source of information. I started a spreadsheet to keep track of my WS this year. I am anxious to start adding my own stuff to the database. I am up to 130 different plants that I have WS so far. I need to research some more before I do them.
OMG!!! OK-now I don't feel like the only garden geek here-I think we have about the same amount outside-LOL
I have been afraid to count I just watch as my deck gets more and more pots on it-LOL
dylan, if you have any questions about the best way to sow a certain plant (surface, 1/4 of an inch etc) just let me know. I have a wonderful book that I use. It rarely mentions winter sowing (it does talk about refrigerators when needed so that is a hint) but all of the other info is there.
Just send me a list of genus' and I will let you know what it says about that genus :o)
It's been so crazy here the last few weeks I haven't even started. But I do want to try at least a few. Coneflowers for one. This will be my first attempt at wintersowing so wish me luck
Good luck cat!! I think you will be pleasantly surprised! If you need anything, let me know...I will do my best to help. I am no pro-but grandma is a call a way-LOL. She doesn't garden anymore as she lives somewhere that it is not allowed, I am hoping to get her over here more often so she can play in the dirt here with me. My favorite of her tips was not to touch tomato plants after you smoked, she said they produced less when exposed to the toxins on your fingers. I never found out if this were true or not-and now that I quit, it doesn't matter-LOL (That reminds me, how is Kathy doing on her quitting?)
Again-good luck cat-let me know if I can help :o)
I will. I haven't heard how the quitting is going either. I've gotten behind with everyone in here! Maybe after the holidays are behind us, I can get on more
LOL, I do understand :o)
Planning on adding more seeds to the WS database....just FYI and wanting to bump again :o)
Robbi have you done coneflowers??? Wintersown them I mean?
Yes, those I have-they also self seed VERY well here so I am certain they work. Both Echinacea and Rudbeckia :o)
Any updates on the propagation data base?
No news yet but hope it happens soon as I have some info I can add there as well....winter is the best time for me because come Spring I will be swamped :o)
Still no WS in sight for me. It was 51 degrees today! I'm not complaining by any sense of the word but this is really odd weather, even for us. They are talking about snow in a day or so but it just has not been staying cold enough to put out my seeds yet. Not that I had any time to plant them. We've been out of town for the holiday but are back now. I'm so far behind on everything I seriously doubt I can ever catch up. Kind of like it might be easier to move than clean up everything. LOL But I wouldn't do that & leave my plants, so I have no choice. My oldest son laughs at me because he knows I would rather run a rototiller than a sweeper. Well, duh!! What does he expect?
LOLOL-I love the idea of moving so not have to clean up-LOL
kind of like me throwing away a grill so I didn't actually have to scrub it-LOL I did that last week and it felt so good I wanted to do it with all the dishes-but my son was watching and I wasn't sure if I could find the exact plates at the store so I wouldn't have to explain my madness to DH-LOL
If I had a rototiller I am sure I would be the same way! HA HA HA
Robbi, you could have used the grill as a planter ya know! We had an old one and I painted it, yellow of all colors, (my son hates it!) and planted my strawberry plants in it, AND they are still green! LOL
LOL-no, I don't think a george foreman would hold flowers :o)
LOL-nope, probably not!
Distant, Now you can get a grill w/ removable grids. I got a Hamilton Beach a few months ago & I love it. Grills go right in the DW. But I tried to find one for my daughter & no one here sells that kind any more. Just the George Forman kind. And those cost a fortune if you get the removable grids. Mine was on clearance for $30. Didn't realize what a bargain it was at the time. But it is worth more not to waste time cleaning it. Mine never leaves the stove top. I use it almost every day for all kinds of things. My old one sat in a closet for years b/c I hated cleaning it. When I finally used it a few times for grilling sandwiches I decided that wasn't so bad to clean up. So, of course it died then.
My George has started to peel and I didn't think that would be to healthy-that is why it went in the trash...I need to find some that don't peel after a year of use, Does the Hamilton Beach have that black teflon stuff that can peel off?
I think it might have silverstone finish. Not sure what it is but it wipes clean with a wet paper towel no matter what gets stuck on it. I just wipe it off unless it's something greasy. Then it gets rinsed & put in the dishwasher. I've never had to scour or scrape anything off. I don't use anything that would scratch it but I honestly can't imagine this finish peeling off like the Forman does. Maybe the new ones have a better finish. I've heard other people say theirs did the same as yours.
Thanks, I will need to look the Hamilton Beach one :o)
Robbi
I hope you have better luck than I did. Like I said I looked all over town & no one has them here any more. I got mine at Walmart & Kmart had them too. Maybe you should check HB's web site to be sure they still make it. Walmart still carries the other HB appliances so I don't know why they wouldn't carry the grill but I can't imagine that they would discontinue it when it's better than the Forman grill.
The HB grill sounds great! -I have been wanting an indoor grill for a while, and this sounds like just the ticket. I googled, and Circuit City sells them online with free shipping.

whoo hoo, thanks susan!!!
I am new to WSing and WSed my first four sytrofoam cups a few days ago. Is there anyway to enter the "--" option for the first question that asks if you had any success? For me, I can't answer that until time has passed, so I can't put yes or no just yet. Or should I just wait a while? Eager to enter what I have recently WSed. Thanks. :o)
r30
The way they have it set up is to use it after Spring hits :o)
That way you can say yes or no. I am hoping they will someday have a way to do it in out journals when it is pending-for now I am typing the info in by hand on my journal and will transfer this years results in the Spring.
OK-Dave, looks like we have many entries...any idea when we will get a direct link? Just curious and hopeful :o)
Robbi
Will there be a search box for the WS Dbase?
Ladies, check out this zone map! It's far more accurate than the USDA one. Compliments of Seandor, the clever girl that she is. I'm in zone 31 and it's right on the money for my area. Much more helpful to figure out planting dates based on frost dates.

Excellent suggestion doccat5! The sunset zones are by far superior. Way to go for posting the link!
garden6-when I use the journal-I mark it on the date thingy that is there for evens. LOL-not sure what it is called :o)
So I start with the WS event, then when it germinates, I will add it as another event-and if my hands aren't to full-I will again add another event for its bloom date. :o).
I also know how I sowed it based on a book I have here. Every genus is done in the way it says in a book, so I will be able to document that as well in the WS database.
Robbi is so enthusiastic about her Polar Planting! ♥
LOLOL-right now-with all of these seeds-I want to run the other direction-LOL
Just got my BIG swap in-what was I thinking-LOLOL
