i planted nemophilia black eyes (penny blacks i think) last year, and nary a one came up.
sigh.
the quest for a black and white garden continues...
Harper's Birthday - part 3
I hope the lupines do well. Nary a one in our garden (yet), but Anna and I both love them.
Candyce - are you growing them from seed? When did you plant them?
And are they annual or perennial lupine?
Oh, as far as the Grandpa Ott's go, I haven't gotten them to grow in my garden yet. Don't know why - so WS-ing is their last chance.
Amy, a black and white garden? Is that the same as a white garden and a black garden? [Are there any actually black flowers? I thought there were just very dark blues and very dark maroons.]
But, Happy Birthday Harper!
xxx, Carrie
Wow - that's some list, Sue. How exciting! You'll be pretty busy in the spring!! LOL
I did more today, Louise. I actually "stooped so low" as to fish through my teen's (extremely messy) bedroom for empty water bottles. I scored!
Resourceful, Sue!! LOL
It's amazing the things you can find in your kid's room!!
Thanks for the birthday wishes Carrie!!
I guess I wasn't very clear. No, we do not have lupines, and I have never grown them in the garden, either from seeds or seedlings. It's just that Anna and I both really like them, so we MAY try to find a few seedlings this year, to fill in the bare spots.
Candyce, I've had pretty good success with lupines from seed.
Thanks, Dave.
We just might try them, then. I'm glad to hear of your confidence in growing them.
Candyce, I did Lupines from seed the first time in '06. Just three or four plants. Two bloomed last year - a pretty purple. Did some white and yellow last year - should bloom this year! Then cheated this past Fall, and bought some dwarf ones!
If you allow the seeds to dry on the plant, Sue, you'll always have plenty. Just keep on planting the seeds since Lupine are "short lived perennials". Lots of sun, no wet spots and you should have great success.
Thanks, Arlene!
Very pretty Pirl!
Thanks!
Candyce,
if Sue and Dave and Pirl and even I can grow Lupines, I'm sure you can too! They were one thing I winter sowed that I could ID the seedling because it looked just like the ones already coming up. Pirl, if I leave the seeds on the plant, won't it self-sow? Or do I still need to re-sow with new seeds?
xx, Carrie
Oh - Happy Birthday Harper!
pirl, I love your lupines! I would like a big sweep of them like that. Hmmm...new garden?
Pirl - beautiful Lupines. I planted some last year (plants, not seeds) and never got to enjoy them. They became someone's dinner, or breakfast or maybe even lunch but I think I would have noticed them at lunchtime. (probably a woodchuck) Eleanor
Thanks, Dave and Eleanor. Yes, the birds and other critters can get the seeds but they drop so many there's always a good chance some will survive.
I started a new thread. This one is just too long - Happy Birthday, Harper!

Oopps! Link doesn't work!! Go to Northeast Forum and Open Harper's B-Day - #4. I'd fix it, but me and links don't get along. Someday I'll learn how to do them. Pirl, if you're out there somewhere, please fix the link!! Eleanor
