Garlic

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

No, Horseshoe, I didn't mean corn, I meant garlic. I was listening to a program on corn and got my wires crossed. I have now fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Boy howdy, tell me about it it, pajaritomt. I'm guilty of the same type of thing. (Is it our minds that are the first to go, or the last?) (I can't remember.) ;>)

Today it is a balmy 71º (December!?). The City has brought me 3 dumptruck loads of leaves this past week so I reckon I'll go out and mulch my garlic rows with some.

Happy Growing, Folks!

Horseshoe its nice to know someone is getting good weather. Here in OH we are getting freezing rain and its 31* currently. Much better than the 11* degrees day before yesterday. Why doesn't a standard keyboard have a 'degree' key?

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Well, horseshoe, I hope the mind is the first thing to go, I think. Anyhow, I am jealous of your truckload of leaves. I got a lot of pine needles this year, but when my friends put their leaves out for me, I was out of town. They called and left me a message to come get them, but by the time I got the message another leaf napper had removed them. No one has any idea who. Perhaps the county, perhaps another gardener. Oh well, I have some left over from last year and next year, I better stay in town for leaf season!

chickenrancher, now THAT's a good question. Maybe one day someone will design a key just for degrees! (Meanwhile, if you hold down the ALT key while punching 167 on your number pad, then release the ALT key you should get the º symbol.)

Pajari....nuthin' worse than a leaf thief! Would be happy to share mine but for the distance of delivery!

Ahhh, the value of leaves. Mulch, soil conditioner, compost, bug repellent, and of course, a play pile!

Back outside again!

Horseshoe, that degree thing is great! I will be putting that somewhere were I can look it up easily. Yes, I have mixed feelings about the leaf thief. Recycling is good and I am happy that more people are catching on. On the other hand, I did want the leaves!

It is 30º outside. WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO I tried it and it worked! LOL
Learn sumpin new everyday! :)

Shoe, good to hear my "composting" is as good as the other composting! I enjoy skipping steps! Which is why I probably will spell out degrees before holding down on the alt, typing three numbers, turning around and blinking three times to get a degree mark. That is too complicated for me. I'd never remember the numbers(I've already forgotten cause I can't see where you posted it) and I'd have to look at the keyboard too much for all that! I may try it once, just to try it...... Ok, I tried it twice...once, not on the number pad and nothing happened, the second time it took me back to my home page?! See, this is why I don't try complicated things! If I did try a compost PILE, I'd probably blow up the whole town or some crazy thing!

Hmm, I can't seem to get the degree symbol to work. I get a solid dot then it reverts me to my home page on my browser. I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser what do you use?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I am using Mozilla as well.

Nova, OH(Zone 5b)

I figured it out. I have a laptop so no 10 key on the side. Its just easier to write it out.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I had to use the key pad as well as the ones across the top didn't work. Donno why though?

Diversion of conversation ... I checked on my garlic a few days before the weather got so cold and they were well rooted, and mulched with straw. I can hardly wait for spring to see the tops push through. I always liked the change of seasons and now I have yet another reason to like winter! Sad to say I'm already planning next years garden ('09) and don't even have most of this years in the ground. Okay so it isn't even this year yet ('08).☺
I'll be starting my celery indoors in a couple weeks. Then others as the winter weeks drone on until I can spring till and plant.

I'm already looking at different varieties of garlic to try!!! What is everyones favorites? Please give me some ideas there are so my varieties and I want to try them ALL but only have so much room :(

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Mine are still doing awesome in my mini green house. Still in the small pot, with no heat, on the top shelf, but doing great!

chickenrancher, re garlic, the Inchelium is good and I also grow French Silverskin. But heck, for years I've also grown 'grocer store' variety (it's usually California White) and have had excellent results. The good thing about garlic is that it tends to easily and readily acclimate itself to your environment. Sometimes that is good, sometimes not so good as some varieties are more tolerant to heat, some more tolerant to cold, etc.

mistygardener, regarding the degree sign, the numbers at the top of the keyboard won't work for ALT symbols...don't ask me why. You (and others) need to use the number keypad (and remember, if it didn't work before was your 'number lock' button set to on?).

misty and pajaritomt, glad you learned (or is it learnt?) the degree sign. I have to keep a note taped to my monitor for reference for those ALT key things. After a while it becomes second nature to use them. But, as a speed typer I can see why others would just type 'degrees' out rather than do the alt stuff.

I have a confession to make...I never got around to mulching my garlic today! Wahhhhh! But I did manage to dig a big drainage ditch for my sink I'm putting in my shoffice, so that should account for something, eh?

Okay, running back outside... am burning up daylight in here. See ya later!
