OOKK>>>>Showing my ignorance again- What's a Chimera? I've read that word before different places but couldn't figure it out!
Happy Holidays AV BINGO let the game begin!
Chimeras actually contain 2 genetically distinct types of tissue. Check out the FAQ in the resource "sticky" at the top of the forum... there's a definition and a link to some good info about chimera AVs there. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=1946442
AAWW... SO that real pretty striped one that was posted at the beginning of this was a Chimera? I think it was critter-said she thought it was Gypsy
Diane, chimeras still have names.
I have 13 of them but have been too afraid to take a whack at them. They won't come true from a leaf. So....that means we have to cut the center out and root it to get a true looking plant.
Let me look up Gypsy on my first class disc.
edited to say that the only Gypsy on my first class is this one:
Gypsy (269) 01/17/1955 (C. Spoutz/C. Ulery) Single orchid. Ruffled girl foliage. Standard
but remember I am new at this, too.............help Critter?

And when you cut out the center to root , it puts out offsets to make the babies, right?
The cutout center makes one new plant. Then the crown of the mother plant starts to sucker and you can cut again and again. Let me find the thread that Critter found for us that Snowrose made. I couldn't copy and paste it so scroll back up and look for the highlighted thread that Critter provided us on propagating chimeras.
The one at the top of the thread is a "noid" (no official ID -- an unnamed plant) that nannanavarro calls "Gypsy" or "Gypsy noid." Sorry, I thought that was clear. It's not a chimera -- there's a thin edge of color going all the way around the petal. Not all flowers with striking center stripes are chimeras, but most of them do seem to be. This one doesn't always bloom like that; sometimes it's kinda muddy and freckled... whereas I think a chimera would probably always bloom with clear stripes.
Chimeras do what they do because the two colors actually come from two genetically distinct types of tissue in the same plant. That's why leaf cuttings don't work to propagate them... the leaf usually has only one genetic type of tissue in it, so you only get one of the bloom colors. Crown suckers, on the other hand, have both genetic types of tissue in them, so you get what you need to express the striking two-toned blooms. Actually, I don't know what would happen if you tried to propagate a foliage chimera like 'Harmony's Little Stinker' from a leaf cutting... that might just be worth a try!
I'll be back later with a call... sorry to make you wait, but Brent & Becky's just posted the half off sale I've been waiting for... :-)
hmmm ... I might just put down a leaf from it to see what happens!
I had never heard of Chimera AV's until joining DG. And, then when Snow sent me this one and said it was a foliage chimera that was new to me also!
A lady at our local AV club gave me a chimera called Peppermint Cathy but it's near death. Not sure what I'm doing wrong with it. Maybe I should try to save the crown and grow another.
Well, I'm outta here again. Have a million and one things to get done today.
Snowrose told me something about Harmony's little Stinker and propagating by leaf. Either the leaf is not variegated on the new plant or the bloom is not the same.......maybe both....
Gail..I tried that with my little stinker and the leaves were all green on the babies..same bloom tho...I took the crown off my Fords Pinwheel a couple months ago and you should see all the little babies the mother plant has ready for me to take off now! If they all survive my surgical removal ..lol..I will have a boat load come spring! I will snap a pic later.
Well I am off to a rip roaring start on this game..1 so far..need to play catch up : )
thanks, Nancy! I knew it was something that didn't come true.
Well, then I guess the "propagate by crown suckers" holds true for foliage chimeras also! Odd, since you'd think both genetic types would have to be present in the bicolor leaf. Hmm. Isn't there also a way of propagating chimeras from flower stalks... that thing where you treat the flower stalk with some sort of chemical to make it produce a sucker... I have a vague recollection of that method working for chimeras... crown cuttings and crown suckers sound more certain, although doing a crown-ectomy is a bold move when you have a $$ plant like some of those can be!
OK, you've all been waiting so patiently for today's call, you've been such perfect angels... :-)
23. Perfect Angel
Perfect Angel (8262) 07/28/1995 (S. Sorano) Semidouble light pink frilled star/blue fantasy. Dark green, ovate, quilted, wavy. Standard
We've got 2 good photos in FC that look quite different.
First photo was contributed by Wayne Discher.
I like the bloom on this one.
That is a pretty one! I like the fantasy markings. Some of them look like someone took a paintbrush and just dabbed on color.
Oh ..... and I'm a Perfect Angel too ..... NOT! But, I try to be!
:)
Well ... I just checked and it looks like eleven of you have "Perfect Angel" on your cards!
Yes and I am one of them... YEAHHHHHHHHHH
Hugs,
Susan
woo hoo ME TOO!!!
Yes I have it too giving me a whopping total of 2 on my card!!! LOL
I got a whopping 2 also............woooo hoooo maybe one of us will be the biggest loser :) *lol*
Good morning!
How many people will spend this weekend stringing...

Not me...I am having about forty people...Men, Women, and Children here for a "family" baby shower...lol Isn't that a hoot! I may have to be commited on Monday.
I hope to get my tree done next week sometime though...or if the shower is over early enough maybe I can get the kids (my three and their spouses) to go and get the tree for me at least, and we can decorate it Sunday. LOL
Didn't have that one....maybe Cc and Kk has that one though! Have a good day everyone!
Nope not here!!!
And I am NOT going out to hang holiday lights either this weekend! Our high is supposed to be -17C
which is 0 F!!!
I had it....wooo hooo.....up to big ol 3 now :)
I am not hanging lights this weekend either but I AM going in the shed to bring in my fiber optic snowman collection as I LOVE to sit there at night and watch all the lights change.
My Goodness ..... COLD! I guess living so far South I sometimes forget what it's like elsewhere.
It's FALL here!! My Hickory trees and one Maple tree are just now losing their leaves! I raked up so many leaves a couple of days ago. I was mowing the lawn and the mower actually got jammed up with leaves stuck in the chute for the bag - mower stopped running. I had to call hubby at work to ask him what could be wrong! I had to take the bag off the back of the mower and remove the entire chute/tube thing and pull all the stuck leaves out. With all the leaves I got a lot of great mulch for my flower beds!
We are still @ 80 during the days here and in the high 60's at night! There's supposed to be another cold front come through early next week and we are supposed to have two days of temps (daytime) in the low 60's and nights in the high 40's .... but then right back up to the high 70's again by next weekend. It's 70F here right now and foggy and drizzly. We had some much needed rain last night and hopefully will get a little more today.
ooops ... I hit send accidentally before I was finished talking! Yeah, I know ... I'm never finished talking! LOL.
We haven't hung lights yet either. A couple of neighbors have their lights up. My hubby is giving finals next week and then he will be off until after the first of the year! So, I will have a very long Honey Do list for him while he is not teaching! I collect snowmen (snow people) and have about 10 of those large rubbermaid storage containers full. I usually have snow people all over the house. Since we don't use our fireplace very often down here the mantel and hearth get covered with white fiber fill stuff (snow) and a lot of my snow people adorn the fireplace during the holidays. I also have them on tables ... my kitchen counter, one of the bathrooms, the desk in the study .... snowmen everywhere!
Just searched my computer but can't find the pic's I took a few years ago!
Lin, I am jealous of you with your temps. God planted me in the wrong part of the world! I do not like cold. Would like to live where it never or seldom freezes. But then with my plant addiction maybe He did know what He was doing. It could get really bad not having to bring them all indoors for winter! LOL Oh, and I like snowmen too!
I am still trying to decide what to do about decorating. None of the children is coming home for Christmas as they were here for Thanksgiving. I may just decorate the inside and not have a tree. I am not entertaining even Sunday School or any group this Christmas.
Is that being the grinch who stole Christmas?
Gail, You a Grinch??? NO WAY! Not at all! We actually have not put up a tree in the past 5 or 6 years! My MIL passed away 3 years ago and my Mom a couple of months after her. I was so busy taking care of them. My husbands mom was here in town in an Assisted Living home about a mile away. I always decorated a little 4' table top tree for her in her room and had the lights on a timer. My Mom was in South Florida and the last two years of her life I was down there more than I was home. I would go down for two or three weeks, come home for two weeks and then go back down. We always decorated her house up for her even though she said it was too much trouble! We know she LOVED it! We got her a huge tree and trimmed it for her every year and decorated the outside and inside with lights and all. My husband is one who doesn't care one way or the other about a tree so it didn't bother him. He always hangs the outside lights and I always have snowmen and other decorations inside but it just got to be too hectic with bothering to move furniture to find a place for the tree inside! I Love decorating ... just hate having to take it all down and store it away after the holidays are over. Seems like it takes so much more time to undo it than to do the decorating! LOL. We are always spending time at my oldest sisters during the holidays anyway and she has a 12' tree in her living room and a 6' in her family room! She says she can't imagine NOT having a tree up during the holidays. To me, it doesn't matter. The tree is not what it's all about anyway. I would rather enjoy a few decorations here and there, it makes it easier for me not having to worry about so much to put away when January rolls around! LOL. My sister thinks you aren't in the holiday spirit if you don't put up and decorate a tree. I enjoy baking and listening to holiday music while doing so .... that's part of my holiday spirit! We adopt a needy family each year also and buy gifts to wrap for them.
Well, I can't seem to stay off the phone here .... I type a few sentences and the phone rings .... hang up and a few minutes later it's ringing again! It's hard to think straight! Guess I better get busy and get some things done. Gotta run up to Wal-Mart for a couple of items and gotta get the laundry in the dryer and another load in the washer! So, I'm outta here! Y'all take care and have a Beautiful Day!
Ummm (grimacing w/shame).... my husband dismantles Christmas around here on Christmas morning. So by the time it's noon and my Christmas dinner is ready, the dining table and dinner is all that's left of Christmas around here. I just try to look on the bright side and think at least I didn't have to pack everything back up! Of course there is always a few items he forgets then I get to drag out the boxes or stick them somewhere and hope I remember them next year. SO Grinch??? No not you Gail! I keep threatening to buy him a hat that says Baa Humbug and glue it to his head during Christmas LOL
That may be one of the funniest stories I have been told about Christmas! i can't believe he takes everything down on Christmas Day (LOL). Everyone I know takes their decorations down with the goal of having them down by Jan. 1........
yup, it's a year of bad luck to take them down before the first of January---
SO THAT'S what our problem is!!!! Can't win the lottery for anything! Now I know it's hubby's fault! Won't he be glad to know?....
I imagine he'll be thrilled!! LOL
I avoid the bad luck by not putting any up at all----
I started a thread on the AV forum about successes and failures..........I miss Snow and keyring something terrible. If you know how to find old tutorials like Critter did the other day for us on chimeras, would you please post over there and tell us how to find them. Critter, are you there?
I'm here now (just got back from lunch and playdate with my godson!)...
Using the search engine is pretty straightforward. You can type a word like "chimera" in the box at the top right of the forum page and click the button marked "search forums," but for more options, just click the button first. You'll then be able to choose which forums to search, and you can tell it to search just the thread subjects, or to look in the body of the posts. You can also search for posts by specific users.
For example, to find the information on chimeras, I typed "propagating chimeras" in the box, then chose the AV forum from the list. The thread from Snowrose popped right up in the results.
Plantladylin, I love your idea of putting the snow people in the fireplace. We do not use our fireplace in the living room and that is a grand idea. I keep candles in there but the season calls for something more Christmas. New project for the year. Thank you. Elaine
LOL Diane ... Your husband and mine make a good pair! I tell mine every year that he has no Christmas spirit, that he's too bah humbug! He hates the commercialism regarding the holiday and I understand that but I do have to prod him to get a bit of Christmas spirit going! He does not like to shop (unless it's at Home Depot or Lowes :) He reluctantly puts lights up on the outside of the house. I remember one year where he surprised me and took everything down and packed it all up so nicely and put it all away. When I came home from work, the house was clean and empty looking! Your comment about him putting stuff away and you finding things later and sticking them away somewhere sounds like me! I have found four or five little snowmen in drawers in the study, a couple in the buffet drawer in the dining room! So, those guys are now out .... waiting for all their friends!
Oh Kami .... I don't actually put them in the fire box .... just all over the hearth and on the mantel. I guess I could put the fiber fill (snow) inside and put some of them in there too!
I thought about putting the "snow" in the bathtub in my front bathroom and putting a bunch of the larger Snow people in there! Got that idea from a friend who collects teddy bears! She used to put bears in the bath tub in her front bathroom .... during the summer one time she had a table & chairs (with checkered tablecloth and a tea set) in the tub and her bears all sitting around having a picnic. It was so cute. I told her she could do the fiber fill and they could be having a bubble bath!
I just love snowmen .... they always make me smile!
