What is still in bloom?

(Zone 7a)

I saw a thread on this awhile back but now I can't find it. Folks were showing what is still in bloom in their gardens.

This is a picture from Thanksgiving morning 2007, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Roses and Allysum and Snapdragons, oh my!

(Have to fix the trellis.)

my camelia's are staring to bloom, they didn't last year. I'll send pics. later.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, how nice! I'm jealous. The only thing I have blooms on are some pansies/violas that are a bit sheltered by the house. Everything that wasn't cut down to the ground is that icky yellow/brown color. I just keep reminding myself that we are talking about moving to at least a zone 7.

My "Endless Summer" Hydrangea has several beautiful, pink blooms on it right now. I have NO idea why! Except that some of the newer stems have decided to bloom and that we have had still warm temps. off and on. Hot....cold....warm...cold...almost freezing....Highs in the mid-70's yesterday (Thanksgiving). Tonight and tomorrow night--below freezing.
That is just how things are here in Maryland! We are used to it!

NOT after tonight! It will surely freeze!

Yup, it froze. They said 24 degrees. I goofed and left a christmas cactus out, but it seems like the leaves(stems) are recovering. I have pansies too, though, and they will keep on blooming all winter every chance (nice spell) they get. Oh, one hardy cyclamen is still blooming

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YUP! My "Endless Summer" Hydrangea that was still in bloom a couple of days ago, froze too. Now looks all droopy.
From the beautiful pink blooms--they all turned to "YUK" in a couple of days Hey! It IS time anyway!!!

By now--everything in my Garden, that was left out, has frozen. Of course--being a "seasoned gardener" , I do not leave anything out that should NOT be out at this time of year!

I still have a lot of leaf-raking to do. At least twice! Did it a few days ago, then the winds hit a few days ago and most of the leaves came down--and now my back yard lawn is, once again, covered in golden leaves. AHHH, Fall!!!!

I still have to drop Fall fertilizer on all my perennials and bulbs and shrubs. I tend to forget about this most years, but this is VERY important to do! Have to do it soon!
Everything is cut back---dug up---cleared off-----brought in-----I am "almost" ready to put my Garden to sleep and not worry about it any more.
EXCEPT--------raking the leaves up. I have 2 trees in my back yard, and they drop their leaves about a month apart. AND--mowing the lawn one last time. I am off ALL next week. I am sure I will get to ALL this mno matter what!

How are YOU all doing????????
Are you done with all the Fall chores????
WHAT do you still have to accomplish?

Gita

Here is my "Endless Summer" Hydrangia just a couple of days ago. Now it is GONE!!!!!!!!!!

Gitagal, your Hydrangea looks like cotton candy! Beautiful! And here in West Valley, we get the same kind of weather, up and down.

rb250, where are your pics you promised? I want a camelia to put in the greenhouse when I get it up and need to see the different ones so I can decide. (Like I could pick just one! LOL)

DH mowed the lawn one last time yesterday and today it snowed. How's that for timing?

Kwanjin,

Over the last couple of years I have posted, and attracted a lot of attention, by the pictures of my "Bob Hope" Camellia. Seems no one (??) has this one. It is a beautiful, double red. The petals are wavy with bright yellow stamens in the center.

Years ago, I bought it at my HD. It is now a bush about 5' tall. Covered with buds for next Spring's show!

I sent Mike (mqiq77) in Georgia about 30 cuttings. He seems to be an expert on Camellia propagation and has helped me out with advice and given me all kinds of praise on how beautiful my blooms are.
Maybe you could contact him next Summer and see if he would share a cutting with you. I am hoping many of them rooted for him. Camellias are, supposedly, very hard to root.

I will see if I can find a picture to post for you.

Here's a view if the top of a branch of the same.

Isn't she a knockout? I do nothing special! I have it by the front steps of my house. It faces north and the Camellia never gets any direct sun. It does have high bushes on either side of it that keep the winds off of it. Camellias do not like blustery winds.

If you plan to buy one to plant outside, make sure it is a truly perennial one!
Many of the ones they sell are not.

Here's a picture of the whole bush. Last one---I promise....:o)

Abosolutely the most gorgeous thing I've seen! I do need to find a true perennial because I plan on putting her in the GH. Lots of shade you say? I can position her in it so she's shaded. Thanks for the pics and tips! LOL

I always thought the whites ones were beautiful but yours really is the knockout you say she is. Thank you.

kwanjin,

I do not know anything about growing a Camellia in a Greenhouse.
Some questions come to mind......

--don't they need the winter for a cold period?
--mine is already covered in flower buds--all small and tight, but they will sit there all winter and "swell" when the time is right.
If "Nature" does this, would the plant not have all it's time-frames "out of kilter" if it never gets a Winter????

Just wondering......
Maybe you could get in touch with Mike and ask him. I do not see him much on any of the Forums I frequent, but he might be on the Shrubs one or such.

I will contact him. I am not going to heat the GH so any plants will have to be just he kind that can take the cold but need to be frost free. That may be one of the Qs to ask Mike.

Thanks! Kwanjin

Love that camellia! This shot was taken of my yard on Thanksgiving day. We are getting down to freezing most nights but up to 60 daily. I doubt any more buds will set until spring.

Are they repeat bloomers (the iris) or is this a freak thing this year? I know some people across teh country are having thing bloom out of season.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

My repeat blooming white iris are still blooming. They typically do bloom in the fall.

(Zone 7a)

I need to get some repeaters. The Iris I have are spreading like fire. Do they all do that?

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Yes, they all spread. Not all are rebloomers.

(Zone 7a)

These have doubled the area they are in, in one season.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

In my yard today are pink verbena, red knockout rose, pink chrysanthemum, and my pink camellia bush is flowering its head off! We haven't had our "killing" freeze yet, but we could have it at any time now. My few little blossoms make me so happy when I go outside and see them. :)

(Zone 7a)

I bet they're fabulous, Flowrlady!

We've had more snow and I STILL have snapdragons and allysum! And one tiny miniature red rose bud that looks like it might still bloom if we don't get more snow. I'll post a pic if it does.

Gitagal, I just sent "Mike" a d-mail about the camellia.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Kwan. I'm holding out on them, since the next flowers I'll have will probably be the end of Feb. or 1st of March... 2-3 months away!

I forgot to put the red salvia in my post above. It's blooming right now better than it did all summer!

Santa Ynez, CA

some are Re-bloomers and some are not, I think the weather does has some impact on them. Beth awesome pink morning glories, any chance on a trade, seeds for iris?

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Here's another one from today. I only have grown a few iris, but they do well here. What color?

Thumbnail by ByndeweedBeth
Santa Ynez, CA

I have about 800 different colors, varieties and just about every color, stripes etc...
that is another awesome morning glory, I have planted some that grow every year to the top and entire windmill, that stands 8 foot tall, it really is very pretty, it gets totally covered and you can't even see it.

(Zone 7a)

Any chance of some pics, makj?
