New Feature for DG?

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

I've used my garden diary to document my garden and that works very well and there is a forum but it isn't used much. Perhaps the garden diary would work if there were some other way to interact with the diaries so people could ask questions and have responses?
Here's my diary anyway.

Here's the link to the Garden Tours forum that we already have. I can't figure out why it isn't more active.

I see this differently from the diary. Most important of all, it would (presumably) get the 'neon arrow' effect of homepage placement. Second - it's an overview, in words and photos. Diaries are more detailed. If the person whose garden is featured also has a diary and wants it linked, then it certainly should be.

doss, thanks for pointing out the Garden Tours forum. I didn't have it on my watch list because I thought it was all about public gardens which are a whole different thing. I'll have to spend some time over there and enjoy the gardens that are being shared.

I do still like the concept of a featured garden though.

Nice diary Doss :) I'm taking a tour now

edited to say: I love this rock wall http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/15294/ someday I'm going to make one for the north side of our house- it will probably be years from now, but it's perfect!

Another analogy is the bloom of the day (or now Bloom.com) or the Photo Contest vs. Plantfiles or the Photos forum. Yes, if everyone took the time to dig through these, they would be delighted, but those other 'showcase' platforms bring max exposure and hopefully inspire people to look into things like the Tours Forum more!

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

Those are all good points. I can't imagine the structure but it would seem to be fun to have ways to discuss the featured garden.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why not follow it with a chance to discuss it with threads, just like the articles are?

A great idea, Victor....thanks.

Garden Tours Discussion Forum

Here's a forum to take a virtual stroll through others' gardens via the personal tours they've created in their Garden Diary - you can ask questions, post feedback, or simply enjoy the beauty created by other gardeners just like you!

The above is the introduction to the Garden Tours original forum; I think it was Dr Don who proposed this forum as a garden tour to illustrate the evolution of personal gardens probably 2 or 3 years ago.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I like the idea. I just went through all my garden photos for the past 7 years, and saw how small it was to begin with and how lush it is now. Mine is a balcony garden, and much of it has been experimentation with what does best in my several microclimates on the balcony. I'd love to do a photo journey of the growth of the garden from the beginning to now. And I'd love to see others' gardens too. A big variety would be great.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I look forward to seeing everyone who wishes us to to see their gardens. I have thousands of pictures I took at my other place where I lived 50 years. Not for this photo journey tho.

For this place I have photos from when I bought the bare land 1994 to now.

Victor, this is an excellent idea. When I see someone's photos, I often find myself begging for more. You meet someone on one forum and wonder what other wonderful things they grow. And putting something on the home page would also give us the advantage of getting familiar with members that we may not run across otherwise.

Good for you!

Thanks all. Hope the positive feedback keeps coming! Lots more views than posts.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it's an excellent idea. I love seeing the whole picture.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I wonder, though, how I could photograph my whole garden. I can't do it, even when AI lean out a second-story window. Any tips, Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It doesn't have to be in one shot - but a series of them. However, overhead shots are great for showing the 'big picture'. It's the only way I get to show off my crop circles! Seriously, I go on my roof or lean out the window.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

11 years ago a company flew overhead and took a great photo of my place. I had hoped they would do the same thing every 5 years. They didn't but another company took another picture 7 years later. now I am hoping someone else might do it again. It is just great to be able to compare the changes in 7 years.

candyce -
why is Al leaning out your 2nd story window?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes Donna - I know Globexplorer is one that does it. I bought a photo of my house from them.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

The pen?? Victor? Did it show your cell block?

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

A little slow catching up around here - Victor, what a wonderful idea! I've been wanting to spend some time organizing photos to show a "before and after" of the gardens and this might just be the inspiration I needed :) Thanks!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I agree rcn48! Nice idea Victor!!

Harper

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I only wish Al was leaning out my second-story window.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

That is all we need to be seen doing by non-gardening neighbors. LOL Mine already suspect I am looney from the (weird) gardening practices I sometimes am seen doing.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I have to climb up to the roof to clean out the gutters. Might as well take photos then... of course, the garden isn't looking so good now. More like brown and dead...

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

OK, fess up Windy. Just what are the weird gardening practices you are seen doing????

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, Windy.....do tell!! LOL

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

does it involve Al leaning out of your 2nd floor window too? or anyone else?
; )

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

LOL!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Windy's not tellin'.....Now I REALLY want to know......

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

There's nothing like silence to make you more curious.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

well, perhaps her weird gardening practices are so enjoyable that she doesn't spend as much time on the computer as those of us with more mundane gardening practices.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

Well walking around in my oldest jeans with holes in the knees and having huge knee pads on, once drew laughter from the new neighbors. I felt embarrassed, but I need to wear old stuff cause I get down and in the dirt a LOT when I garden.
Garden knee pads are a must because I have to move around and get tired of dragging my padded garden knee pad with me.
Ok, so this is the one I admit to. Next...Lol

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

And we can imagine the ones you do not admit to!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Good recovery, Windy! Actually credible! LOL

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

You guys are too much LOL!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

But thankfully, you still love us!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i saw crocs knee pads the other day.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Do your knees slip off of them like your feet slip off of the crocs shoes???
