Morning Glories 2007 #34

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Becky-Your blooms are AMAZING. I woke up to SNOW this morning-not flowers!!! I would also love to try the Jishi if you get any seeds. LMK if you would like to trade. I love how MG's keep you in suspense-seeing how many blooms you have. I love to grow some up an old Rhodedenron that has a lovely shape. I'll have to post pics. The rhodie came from May Sarton's place(a famous poet), she lived in town and the new owners were adding on and needed to dig it up, along with a VERY lg. laurel that we have. What are some interesting supports you all have used?-Kath

Here's a pic of my front door from this am. This is a rhodie that came from May Sarton's house(a famous writer/poet) Here's a cool link about her that talks about the NH house [HYPERLINK@digital.library.upenn.edu]
The current owners added on to the house and dug this and an ancient laurel up and had them sitting out of the ground for weeks and weeks. My DH offered to put them back in the ground there or here. They thought about it and they're addition was not close to done-they let us take them both!!! I love the shape of this rhodie. We grow MG's up it, it's very pretty. The left tree is a Tolleson's weeping juniper, behind it is a small pond.

These are the MG's(which I still think are great, but little did I know all the variety out there!) growing up the rhodie

They were so pretty before the snow hit! Did they get a chance to make seeds?

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi Beth-They did, but they are all mixed together with the regular. They are just Heavenly Blue-but oh so pretty!. When they were done I couldn't tell what was what! The pics were from Sept. I can't wait to try the new seeds you sent me. I don't think I can grow the ipomoea nil there, but the I. purpurea you sent should be happy! I have some new feathered variety seeds coming from you as well (as soon as i get sase out!) A new addiction!!!

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

You CAN grow nils. Just bring them in at the end of the summer and put them in a sunny window or under artificial lights.

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Beth-you gave me great instructions for growing the nils-but I just meant that I don't think they grow tall enough to grow on the rhodie. I REALLY can't wait to try the nil. Do you bring yours inside? I had not thought about that. I have some good windows-this is more am snow the view I have now! DO you think I could start some now-they are passive solar windows?

If it's your first time growing nils I would wait till spring. They finish the season nicely in the house but are more succeptable to insects and disease. If you really can't wait to try growing one, try one of the Mt Fuji's as they are a little more adaptable and vigorous. Your home temp shouldn't dip below 70 degrees for inside growing. I can't stand the house that hot so I just keep one "grow room" between 70 and 80.

You are certainly correct that the nils won't get as tall as the purpureas.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

OH NO not the "S" word!!!!

Great window you have there FH! I can see covered in MGs!!!

Becky, love what you do with the butterflies!!! I am almost done packing I will be there shortly!!! LOL☺ We will see a high of 45 today with a wind chill of about 30.....

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

I'll be patient-lol- and wait til spring. I already have sprayed my DH's habenero plants for bugs and they've only been in here a couple weeks! I do have a grow light, but it's chilly in the basement. *SIGH*

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

flowerhead, I love the pics of snow. We have gotten snow 2 times in Taft in my entire life. Once was in high school (I am 65) and once about 6 years ago.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Flowerhead - I, too, love the snow photos! I haven't seen snow in about 40+ years! LOL! Thanks for sharing those!

The nils vary and are available in a mind boggling number of varieties as far as length of vines and habits. The SOH or SOH nots can be pretty up there in heigth with the purpureas with the right growing conditions. I have seen some nils grow over my roof top and keep going but they do not have quite the sheer mass of leaves and coverage the purpureas have. Karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

So true, Karen! That has been my "short" experience, too! :-)

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

One more thing: SOH is Scarlett O`Hara and (SOH not) is a pink flower with a white throat commonly mistaken for Scarlett O`Hara. I believe they are kikineyou or small flower long vine plants that also come in many colors.

Hi Beth! Good morning! I`m going out for a last farewell watering to my plants. It is almost curtains for the garden here but not quite. I still had blooms this morning but the weater is getting to them. I might get a few more blooms and vines I can cut to try and ripen the seeds indoors. Good luck to everybody getting the seeds saved.

This is a picture of the dilute Joyce Cobb I rooted for Emma. I cut the vine about a 1/2 inch from a leaf junction and removed the leaves, moistened with water, dipped it in powdered rooting hormone and planted it in fine grained potting soil and water. Then it went in a spot where it could get filtered sunlight and not too much heat. After a week or so it began to grow and I began to move it out gradually into full sun where it is growing normally gaining size like a normal vine. It is setting seeds. I have to say it is easier to gather seeds and also easier to make crosses with the successfully rooted cuttings since they are smaller and singled out. Rooting in water is another way to do this and has already been gone over.

Delightfully off topic here is a picture of Alex announcing what kind of kitten chow he wants. I`m making the shopping list here.

Yes sir Alex, only the best for you I say. :)

Everyone have a great day!

Hi all! Thanks for the info about the i. nil. I was out of town this weekend. With all the generosity from you all her in the MG forum, I will have some good experimenting to do! Do you grow the I.nil in pots or in the ground? Are they particular about transplanting? I am glad you all enjoyed the snow pics! It is pretty. It's amazing that not even a mile down my road there isn't any snow, but we sit just a tad bit higher in elevation. Ver cool when we are in transitional weather and the distinction is so clear! I can't imagine not growing up with snow!!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I prefer pots with wire cage protection for the nils. They like rich loam soil.

This is a cream white color ipomoea purpurea.

I grow my nils in pots so I can bring them in late in fall and ripen the last seeds inside.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I do the same as Beth and Karen, I saved a lot more seeds that way...

Mesilla Park, NM

Me too, I grow in pots, and this year will only bring very few nils inside for winter, the rest inside will be species types. This coming year, i think that I'll start seeds later than I did this past season, it was just too long and alot of work. Instead of starting in Jan, I'm going to start them in March, that will give me a couple of months for other projects and I can take them out of the house a little sooner too. (maybe just afew seeds in Jan) lol.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I envy you folks who have room to do something with MGs indoors. I wish!

Karen, I LOVE your white purpurea! I want to do a purple and white scheme next year. So far I have Moonflower seeds and Pearly Gates, plus a lot of different purples for my scheme. Would you mind saving me a few seeds if you have them?

Judith

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Judith, I`m with you on the inside stuff! To raise plants needing a lot of light like the morning glories I need a big light like Beth has and Somewhere in the house unoccupied by humans or animals. We have a few house plants but nothing real fancy. lol

We have a bright idea for turning our back porch into a plant room though.:)

You have Dmail.

Karen

yeah, I've been using my laundry room, kitchen and spare bedroom.. but, it gets full fast, not to mention the livingroom..lol.

I too am thinking of adding a sun room where we have a slab of cement going to the backyard, attached to the house. I think something like that would work, but I can't even think about that, till next year, we still have not finished the front of the house landscaping.

I'm telling myself that too, A., but I bet I won't be able to wait that long...
I do remember having quite a jungle in the house by May though... Ü
It wouldn't be such a problem if they weren't climbers!

LOL! Well, Joanne ... if we suddenly don't hear from you next Spring, we'll send out the border patrol to rescue you. I can picture you fast asleep with the vines creeping under the door of your bedroom and attacking you! LOL!

I so love this Brazilian MG (Ipomoea setosa)! Honestly, this just an all around amazing MG!!

I love ALL 3 of your blooms, Arlan!

I have one of the purple feathered vines, too. Do you or anyone know what cultivar it is? This a photo of the older and newer blooms.

This is a photo of the same vine with a round bloom. Though the color is showing more blue, but it is really more of a purple color.
