DAILY PICS VOL. 30

Brainerd, MN

Pelletory asked me to start this new thread. I will begin with another story of the "bird brain" Pileated. This morning it visited the BOSS flat feeder. At first it could not figure out how to get at the seed...

Nice series of the Pileated, original_sybil. Any males around to show her the way ?

Oops on the duped image. Not sure how that happened. We have a number of PWoodies that come by. This one in particular is just not the brightest. If you go back to Daily Pics Vol. 28 and start with Post #4156726, you will see another "series" of this Pileated at work.

I had a Pileated yesterday, but only got one image, and the sun was setting right behind the bird. ;-(

Great photos!

Yesterday I had the little male Downy, and this morning a female showed up. She stayed a long time, and was very patient w/ me.

Thanks. ;-)

I have no idea how many there might be. I've only just discovered the "backyard" here, and everything is changing so much. I'm on 1.66 acres at the edge of the Umpqua National Forest. I set up my feeders outside the kitchen (north) when I moved here 9 yr. ago. At that time there was a large cedar about 15' from the house. The tree died, and because it was so near the house (in fire country) it was removed.

To the south are several cedar and a number of dwarf fruit trees, a huge briar patch (now under removal) and the creek where the salmon reappeared after nearly 60 years. Neighbors have a large pasture area just across the creek. The east side is heavily forested with a good variety of trees, with the highway and another, larger, creek to the west.

South, up the mountain, there is heavy logging going on, which I'm sure influences the numbers and varieties of birds showing up here. It will likely change more when my creek is once again year round. (rehab has been done)

I have put several suet feeders in the fruit trees, and most recently a peanut silo which has been completely ignored so far. I may need to move it to a different tree offering more protection.

The woodpeckers seem to most enjoy the fruit trees, and perhaps next nesting season I'll see some fledges.

The Great Tit seems to visit our garden often. I did not know this until recently. Here is one of them.

Touché Linthicum!

Nice shots!

I too have Great Tits Dinu, they can be shy but are there if you look.

One baby Wood Pigeon was sheltering from the strong cold winds by my back door, it tried to get behind the pots but flew to the apple tree.

Soon after Mum came to feed it, see the wing used to hold on to mum for balance.

Ooops, sorry about that old thread post.

Strange, my field book shows a red bellied woodpecker more like a flicker.

Here's the post again. I thought this was a Downy because of the short beak. I get Hairy Woodpeckers too.

Wallaby - those shots are adorable!

Tigerlily - it sounds like you are on the edge of wildlife paradise. Can't wait to see who all comes to visit.

I'll have to try putting peanut butter out - I know the Orioles were all about the grape jelly last summer.

The back of our property is marsh. There is a causeway that I drive over each evening just before I get home and this is the view. I didn't realize until we moved out into the country how important dead trees were to the birds. The egrets and anhingas roost together most evenings and there are great blue herons strolling around the base of the trees in the water. It's always a treat at the end of the day.

Furthest tree from the road, but most packed with birds. Sorry the pic is a bit fuzzy.
