Big excitement in my backyard today. You have talked about Red-breasted Nuthatches in this forum...I had never seen one. Now I have! :)

Sparrows and Chickadee scratching corn like chickens.

Its odd I rarely ever see my Chickadees on the ground.

"Finches and Sparrows and Dove's ... Oh My!"

Today was a great day for birding in my own back yard. I normally have a hard time getting good bird photos because of strong backlighting, lack of contrast, or not enough sunlight. Today was overcaste; but there was just enough light for me to photograph some of my regulars breakfast and dinner guests.

Can anyone help me id this one? It has the wing markings of a female house sparrow; but the body shape and size of a junco.

an OBOL (Oregon birding on line) member has reported seeing birds w/ oil at Coos Bay, Oregon. We have been having a storm w/ south winds, but that's a long way from San Francisco.

Now they're reporting a huge spill on the Black Sea. Sigh!

Yesterday morning I found the Cooper's Hawk dead under a tree where my drive meets the highway. It hadn't been there long, and I'm supposing it was bumped by a passing vehicle. It died in defense position, w/ tail up and fanned. ;-(
While I didn't like loosing the songbirds and woodpeckers, I will miss seeing the raptor.

Super windy w/ rain today. Not a good day for checking out the birds. Except for the Goldfinches and Towhee's, they were keeping a low profile.
