LOL, I was thinking Merlin or Prairie Falcon. :-)
DAILY PICS VOL. 30
Its odd I rarely ever see my Chickadees on the ground.
Northern Goshawk ? at first I thought coopers, but it's pretty bulky and is that a white eyebrow?
Merlin. Note the moustachial stripe below the eye, which confirms it is a falcon not a hawk, and the tail with broad dark barring, which counts out Prairie and Peregrine Falcons.

"Finches and Sparrows and Dove's ... Oh My!"
Today was a great day for birding in my own back yard. I normally have a hard time getting good bird photos because of strong backlighting, lack of contrast, or not enough sunlight. Today was overcaste; but there was just enough light for me to photograph some of my regulars breakfast and dinner guests.
Looks like a female House Sparrow to me Jane. Love all your pics! Thanks SO much for showing us so many we rarely see!
Sybil, Congratulations on the RB Nuthatch! Pics are very nice!
How cute!!!
***After a few more comments on Janes pics,
adelbert will be starting the new thread. :-)
Congrats on the RbN, sybil! Aren't they cute little things? Quite a bit smaller the the WbN.
Hmm, I don't think I've seen a Dee on the ground either.
Nice photos!
Jane, glad you found us. Love your photos too! That last one is just precious!
Sad............
an OBOL (Oregon birding on line) member has reported seeing birds w/ oil at Coos Bay, Oregon. We have been having a storm w/ south winds, but that's a long way from San Francisco.
Now they're reporting a huge spill on the Black Sea. Sigh!
Yesterday morning I found the Cooper's Hawk dead under a tree where my drive meets the highway. It hadn't been there long, and I'm supposing it was bumped by a passing vehicle. It died in defense position, w/ tail up and fanned. ;-(
While I didn't like loosing the songbirds and woodpeckers, I will miss seeing the raptor.
Super windy w/ rain today. Not a good day for checking out the birds. Except for the Goldfinches and Towhee's, they were keeping a low profile.
