This is my little I. coccinea - Orange Noah. Too cute!

This either is an easy self-pollinator or has lots of nectar because every single bloom has produced a seed pod! :-)

And here is "Jishi" the day after. It turns to a light purple color! Still very pretty a day later!

And it looks like the Brazilian (Setosa) may bloom for the first time this week. Love the look of this vine and the buds! Too cool! :-)

Dee - Your JMG Haru Hikari (dazzling light pink) is yummy! I love the pale pink color. Very flirty looking JMG! :-)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Becky this one is real nice! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4181846 Does that happen to be from the seeds I sent you?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes! It is, Ronnie! And I just love it! Have you grown that one out before? If not, if it produces seeds I'll pass along some seeds your way! :-)

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

becky - The bloom you posted here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/beckygardener_1194794945_794.jpg
is obviously a blue blizzard of some type but not distinctly discernible as to any particular cultivar...not yet anyway...

Could you post or send me some additional views of the seedpods on this one here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/beckygardener_1194795728_687.jpg
this plant is showing unusual features in that the seedpod in the center is remaining erect although the sepals look to be I.coccinea...there seems to be another seedpod just above and to the right of the center pod that may be reflexing...

Are most of the seedpod pedicels remaining erect or reflexing(?)...

Please let me know...

Have enjoyed everyone's flowers very much - thank you

Since the "good" seeds of the double Kikyo were not controlled for pollination, I'll try to germinate the one bagged seed in bad shape, as well as sow some others and see if I can't acquire seed of another double Kikyo with which to cross them. And THEN I'll send out any seed if I get good results. I have noted the order in which folks admired or hoped I had seeds to share for future reference.

Would very much appreciate any helpful hints on germinating a small, immature, moldy seed.

Karen,

I`d love to have some seed even if they were open because they can be worked with. You do know what the pod parent was and can go from there.

Thanks Beckygardener,

You have some interesting blooms too.

I just purchased seeds of this JMG and will start to germinate it and a few other new ones I recently obtained here in Japan including a MG cactus type. They only described the flower posted as a double purple blooming Asagao and it looks simular to some that I grew last year 2006.

Oh and I have some dry organic plant food samples that I will share with a few of you who wants to try. We collected a few bags from one of the MG festivals vendors who used this mixture with regular natural Japanese soil. I have a document explaining what the formular consist of but it`s in Japanese.

OOHH Dee this one is nice!!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4183501

Becky I think I will do the Jishi/kikyo in the house again this year to see what I get...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dee - Yowza! The double purple blooming Asagao is BEAUTIFUL!!!! My word ... what an amazing bloom that vine produces! Love it! :-)

Ronnie - I love the little Jishi. It's not a rampant growing vine like the I. nils. It is an I. nil though, right. It's more of a creeping vine for me. Is that how it is supposed to be?

Ron - You know ... when I looked at the photo of Orange Noah (I.coccinea) I saw that seed pod and wondered about it. But then I figured that it will reflex in a day or two. If it doesn't, what does that mean? All the other seed pods are reflexing on the vine. That is the only one that isn't. Here's another view of it.

And here is what all the other seed pods look like. All others are reflexing. Odd that one pod isn't.

Wow, the double blooming asagao is very charming. I love the look of that one a lot!

Hey thanks Ronnie, Beckygardener and Karen.

I gew it last year but didn't grow it this year and may have saved some seeds from 2006. We'll check on it and see what up. TTYL

Dee - That would be awesome if you have more seeds! :-)

Ron - Here is one last photo of a side view. Sorry my camera doesn't take better pics!

Becky - I've never seen I.hederifolia seedpods reflex but once in awhile I'll see a seedpod pedicel on I.coccinea remain erect...

The seedpods that reflex usually do so very soon after fertilization and the seeds in the capsule on yours are already very developed...

There doesn't seem to be any 'flanges' on the seedpod pedicel that is remaining erect like can be seen just below the capsule on the nice photo posted by arlan here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4151987

Is there any flanges on your seedpod pedicels(?)...please double check if you get a chance...

Gardener2005 - some seeds are coming your way. Could you send any back to me that look interesting? I'll do the same for you from my end.

To others, I'll share seeds after growing what I have out. Both Karen-05 and I will be experimenting with some crosses, so hopefully we'll have something to share down the road.

Karen-blue

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Yes, I might could guarantee interesting lol !!! I have some F2 pink blizzard x double blue kikyo open seeds but the pollen was good on these so the rate of selfing should be good with maybe a few crossed with neighbors which were all very cool so it won`t hurt I suppose. Tied blooms on these would increase chances of recessives like the doubling showing where out crossing from cross pollination could get get you different results. In grow outs many will look like plain round flowers with the special ones being very obvious. This is a good way for anyone to get started and learn how to grow them. They need full sun yet protection from exessive heat, weekly pampering with feeding, checking leaves and treatement for disease/ pest prevention right on the dot. Being anal retentive about their care will get good results. A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure with these. If I`m going to put time into them like this then they will be very beautiful and worth it as a enjoyable hobby.

I`ll send you some surprises in exchange after I get your seeds since some of mine are needing to dry before I send them and good luck. :)

P.S. Do grow all of the seeds because the numbers increase your chances of getting a "find". Then you might want to tag the vine and tie blooms on any that suits your taste in order to preserve the characteristics. In a group grow out it is suspenseful because you never know what will turn up. It is like Forrest Gump`s box of chocolates. Karen

The temps have warmed back up into the 80's so I'm getting more blooms. This is the Jishi which is interestingly throwing BLUE blooms now. From deep purple originally to now this pretty shade of blue. Would a change in temps cause that?

Is Kikyo and Jishi the same cultivar ... or somehow related?

Here is a close-up of the mystery vine. Does Blue Blizzard have a pink throat?

Oddly enough ... here is one in another pot that I labeled Blue Blizzard.

The one I have labeled President Bush looks more like Cocoa Chocolate. Here is PB.

Hi everybody,

Beth, you got some nice ones in the grow out. Good on you for being able to get pretty JMG flowers even when the climate gets cooler! I can`t post much today but I couldn`t stand not to say anything at all.

I have to at least say Happy Birthday to Arlan!

Ya`ll have done a magnificent job this year with all the evidence being clearly seen in the pictures!

Karen
