I'm sure a permit is needed to build a ramp. Unless it were disguised as a really big flower box . . .

and meet code I think
Yes, you want to be sure it's done correctly and follows all codes, etc.
I believe there were certain guidelines we had to follow when we built ours. Maybe Carrie would know a little more about the codes. We had ours built 7 yrs. ago by a friend who owns his own construction company, if I remember i'll ask him about it.
Local codes vary. You have to check with the town or city.
Correct, but there is also standard guidelines for handicapped accessories such as width, length, door widths,ect....
Yes - here's the ADA guideline.

dave - from the "when do you say it's done" thread. Thom said he had to "desucker" his "contorted filberts" and, unhindered by any actual knowledge of what he was talking about, i fell in love with the phrase...
"Well desucker my contorted filberts! I thought for sure you were in that discussion, Dave!"
gee, i love words.
I love that sentence, too. Great for a reason to leave a party:
I simply must go home to desucker my contorted filberts!
I love words, too, Amy. Are you a fan of Patricia D. O'Conner, author of "Woe is I"? Perhaps Willard R. Espy and his books?
I love words but hate to read.
That is a problem, Victor.
Or is it vice versa? Honestly, I have gotten away from reading and just can't seem to get back into it. I'm angry at myself over it.
I return to it easily on vacations but at home I have trouble tearing myself away from the computer in winter and from the garden in all other seasons.
That's a major part of it. The kids and other hobbies are also part of it. I still read a lot to get information, but not for pleasure or relaxation. I have not read fiction in years.
Haven't you been reading my posts?
I was expecting that.
i don't know those authors, but Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" books are hysterical if you like puns and literature.
Sounds ffunny.
Victor, we'll just get you books with LOTS of pictures and great BIG letters !
I love to read but haven't read a book in over a year. When I sit down, I fall asleep so I try to keep moving. Chasing a toddler helps!! Eleanor
I looove books on CD! I "read" at least a book a week. I am really getting into murder mysteries - I never like them before - but they are perfect to kill the boredom of driving to the same place and home again every day.
Murder mysteries kill boredom? oops - I gave away the ending.
I used to listen to those books on tape when I drove a lot for my job - helped to keep me relaxed, and not speeding.
We used to listen to Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegone tapes when we'd drive back and forth to Florida. Almost went off the road with the ministers and the pontoon story.
I LOVE garrison Keillor and all of the Prairie Home Companion shows. I miss listening to them. They are just so down-home and honest, ad not too much worry, there, about censorship.
I love Prairie Home Companion, too. It is my favorite thing to do on Saturday night!
Odd that he was being stalked and had to get a court order to keep a woman away from him and stop sending him sensual mail.
If he could leave all politics out of his show it would be more enoyable.
I was never crazy about him - never found him really funny - more campy. I think Leno is funnier but I am NEVER up to watch either. Johnny Carson was way better than any of them - except for Steve Allen.
I agree about Steve Allen and Johnny Carson. Keillor's brand of comedy is a bit more hokey but I still enjoy the weekly Lake Wobegone piece.
I like Keillor's politics and I like his homespun comedy. Reminds me of a kinder, gentler world. I'm the kind of person who shuts their eyes in the movie theatre when there is violence on the screen. There is enough violence in the world that I don't have to pay for it!
I'm with YOU, AYC!!!!
Didn't you list a few violent flicks on your movie list, Cat? Shaft, Men in Black, etc.?
Well - MIB is really a comedy and Shaft is really not that violent - as the violence is on a very small scale. It's the realistic - filling the whole screen with surround sound that makes me shut my eyes.
And Fargo?
Oh yeah - hanging head - but that is another comedy with superb acting! And the violence again is done on a small scale and with a "distance".
I'm not trying to pick on you, Cat. It's just that when you mentioned you hate violence I remembered some of your titles. I think it's natural for us to minimize negative things about something (or someone) we like. There's a good chance you would have seen those movies as more violent had you disliked them.
I too am not into violence. That's one reason why I really don't watch recent movies much. Action movies are filled with it. It has the same effect on people, particularly children, as violent video games - desensitizes them.
Even television has so much more sex and violence these days. Even the commercials do! I am very sad that my children live in a world where they are bombarded with all this garbage.
I agree with you, Victor.
Long ago, when cable TV was new, the first movie my ex wanted to watch seemed like it was exciting car chases but then the violence began and I can't believe it's a good thing for children to witness.
There were also TV shows that showed such prejudice that I felt they should have been on at midnight, IF at all. Young minds can't discern what is prejudice and what is comedy. They can't see the one who is so prejudiced is the butt of the joke/show.
I don't care for the kinds of shows that are on TV these days. I rarely watch anything except for the news and HGTV. Sometimes the news can be just as bad as the shows but I do like to keep up on what's happening!! Eleanor
I want to clear something up from a couple of weeks back. We were discussing the danger of posting photos of kids and family and I mentioned how many DG members there are now, and that some of them can be potentially dangerous. I believe it was Dave who said that even outsiders (non-DG members) can see the photos. I did not think that was correct and double-checked with Admin.
Outsiders can view the 'public forums' - those without the asterisk on the forum list, but cannot post to them. Outsiders AND non-subscribing DG members can only view the first post of a thread in a forum that is non-public - those that do have an asterisk on the forum listing, like ours.
So only subscribing members can view posts following the first one in our threads. That does limit the number, but still does not eliminate the potential danger. Subscribers can be potentially dangerous too. And of course people have been known to hack into even the most guarded websites.
Hope that cleared things up a bit. Still doesn't change the warning.
Thanks for the info Victor. I had already decided not to post pics of my family. I felt safe on this site and let down my guard. You can't trust anyone these days. Eleanor
