My series of periods is being reduced to a single period!

North Augusta, ON

But we gardeners are real heavy thinkers----we need our trailing thoughts!!!!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Well, my thoughts seem to always be trailing ... is that the trait of a real gardener? LOL

North Augusta, ON

LOL-----I like to think so, otherwise I am getting--um--scatterbrained?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Just popping in to say that while I am guilty of using "..." at times, I think
the new rule may have been designed for those who tend to overuse it,
or downright abuse it. :-)

Agreed, Brinda, I've seen several posts that have a long, we're talking about
a sentence length series of ellipsis. Here and there is understandable, but some
of the posts were using them after two or three words for the entire post. LOL.
I've never seen anyone on this thread do it, though.

Nothing like twenty words with 1,264 periods.

:-) KM

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

We now have 1,264 does anyone bid 1,273? Anyone? Going once .=.+!,

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Umm...let me see...okay...I'll bid...how about...1.274.

LOL

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Man, I really need to get a life. And you know it is kinda sad when someone else (wife, mother, brother, postal carrier, barber etc) tells you this - but when you think of it yourself?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad to know I'm not the only one that has noticed........I don't always punctuate.....just a little pause between thoughts.......

LouC

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

whooops. no periods in the above post. I've been corrected. whaaa

I need the dots dots dots to give my brain a chance to change gears dot dot dot and to sound like I am talking instead dot dot dot of typing.:(

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Lou,

I think we've been reduced to but three of 'em at a time.

:-) KM

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

So be it...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Heavens no! I rarely hit the keyboard hard enough to get a capital on the first word of a sentence, so I just use all connecting thoughts without regard to punctuation or grammar.

No wonder I couldn't figure out what was going on. Whatever will I do when I have to complete a thought in sentence form??????????

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Wait, I think I know this one .. a sentence is from ..?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My mind races so much faster than my words, let alone the keyboard! This is going to be difficult.

And here I am at 12:45 a.m.......

7 dots :^)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

roflol pupil........... now look what time it is.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Ha Ha, it is now 3:26 a.m.---I will attempt to remember to check in and not get so lost---in the---Threads!

Am practicing ... at a time...hard but adjusting... ha ha ha!

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

I believe Dave will wake up this morning and think we have all lost our minds....., just when he thought we gardeners could not come up with anything else to complain about...
I, too am guilty, I ponder in space.. sometimes it takes way more than 6 periods.
Sorry Dave, but this IS a great thread!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

WUVIE?

Quoting:

LOL

Did your comma disappear and a period inserted between the 1 & 2? (Or maybe I'm the only one seeing this?)

Man, I'm an idiot for sure. No wonder I'm losing my commas. I didn't even quote correctly, but now it's fixed.

I think this is the weirdest thing I have ever seen!

All the punctuation marks are being messed with along with the periods.

Now, if this site could correct all our grammar and put the punctuation marks in properly, this would be a big wonderful event. In the meantime, this is making me look dumber all the time.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I'm testing this to see if it changes my commas, to periods. And visa versa... and a few other things.

This is what it looks like upon preview.......... (the commas and periods are in the right places, and all of the dots are still there after the word preview). All 9 of them.

How about the comma and decimal point in a number? 1,000,000.00

How about this punctuation? :)

Works!!! But perhaps I should only use one exclamation mark so as to not appear rude!

DO CAPITALS WORK? How about only where they are supposed to be?

Upon another preview, everything is still where it belongs. We'll see after I hit send.

Edited to add: The only thing that appears to be changed is the 9 dots got reduced down to 1. Everything else stayed the same as I originally typed it.

Hi Brinda,

Let me see. Here is a comma, and there is a comma, and we'll see
if the commas come out in the final wash. LOL.

Testing, testing.

This should be four periods....
Four exclamation marks!!!!
And four commas,,,,

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I realize that I need to start thinking before hitting the keyboard; however, sometimes, a series of periods is what the sentence needs.

I think we need to be made aware of our bad habits but don't believe that the site needs to take away our periods when we wish to use them. At the very least, please reduce the periods down to the number of six or however many it takes to make a point of completing a thought. When the site inserts only one period it makes the sentence even harder to decipher.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Huh. I think it's the excessive periods that have been reduced.

What a fun thread. LOL.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

It looks to me like it's set up to accept 3 dots maximum. Any more than that it reduces down to only 1.

That's the only thing that I can find that is being changed. It doesn't mess with the decimal points or commas in numbers.

Edited to add that the system doesn't insert left out words either. :) I just discovered that.

Gessie,

Maybe a break in the paragraph will have to take the place
of all the periods. It looks like sometimes the system allows
three.

Testing three right here...

KM

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Joan,

I think you are right. As three periods are all that are required for
an ellipsis, maybe the system is set up to automatically correct
those with more than three?

:-)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

That would be my guess Wuvie.

North Augusta, ON

ok---so we know hyphens work-----

--er--

lost my train of thought there-----

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is really funny to have this discussion going on. I am glad it has been brought to our attention although it just kills me to have to construct a complete sentence and thought. (LOL)

I have never learned where the hyphen is and to use it regularly so this is going to be a good test for me.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

This is the funniest thread! Y'all are cracking me up!! :-D

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Wuvie? Did you answer me about this quote? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4131664 If so, maybe I didn't understand ...

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

If nine dots become three, couldn't we work with that as a shortcut to divide by three instead of having to find a calculator? >:-O

R.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

so would ......... times ......... equal 81 or would it equal 6---
Oh how I wished I had paid better attention in school.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Brinda,

Yes, I answered your quote post here:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4131732

You were correct, the comma between the numbers was in
fact changed to a period. :-)

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Thanks WUVIE ... this confirms that I've only lost half my mind! I feel much better now!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Okay, Brinda, but which half?

LOL

Seward, AK

I'm cheating but the right rear quarter for me! LOL
