I am shocked that we actually need a #2 for this thread! Fall has been very gentle with us so far, I can only hope it doesn't slam us all at once!!!!
Show us your Bloomers #2
Victor, which DL is budding this late?? I have 2 or 3 budding but I doubt they get the chance to bloom.
I'll have to check the name. It's a yellow one.
Amazing there are still DL and hydrangea, how great is that at the end of Oct. Very nice pics. I will have to go take some pics of what is still blooming out there before the heavier rain sets in tonight.
Tamberlin I don't think you should have that scallop for supper. Looks a little green to me. :) Very cute pic.
Celeste - the DL is So Lovely, the same one that gave me the proliferations.
Victor, i thought you said "The DL is soo lovely; it'll look fabulous next to .... which didn't sound like the Victor we know - unless Sing Sing has finally gotten to you! lol
Al, I thought all sedums were red? Guess not.
Carrie, I had to read that twice too!!
Here, I hope, is TomTom's, which I was trying to emulate:

And if that's not it, it's among these:

Debi, I'm glad it wasn't just me!
xx, C
It's funny reading it myself - including the part about giving me proliferations. Is that better than goosebumps?! Or something else?
Oh, Victor, you just gave me proliferations!
Go forth and proliferate young man.
Prison does strange things to a man.
I guess so! I have two proliferations, myself.
i didn't know what to do with my proliferations until i found DG!
It's an awkward subject.
carrie.... I think tom toms are a different kind of kale.... I bought seeds for these... but didn't have time to start any.... I have some in white also

very nice. Al, what are your temps around this time? My dahlias are petering out. I guess its time to dig them up soon.
Victor, 'So Lovely' is an older classic in the DL world (1969) but I didn't know it was reblooming! I have a second set of buds on 'Triple Treasure' it is a yellow also with ruffles.
Al, I really like 'Blue Bayou' is it a small or a big flower?
I just can't wait until Spring!!
I've already taken photos of all that's left, and looking for something new is impossible now. *sigh* Just looking all all that's still green gives me joy.
That's a sign that you have to add more shrubs for color, Candyce! Itea would still be colorful for you right now - even up there.
Love shrubs, but need new beds for them.
We plan on digging and preparing at least two in the next couple of weeks. Perhaps i can arrange to save some space for the Itea. I have loved the photos of it that I have seen.
Depending on your space, shrubs / small trees don't necessarily require a bed. They can be specimen plants at a focal point in the middle of the lawn, etc.
I was just out looking at my Callicarpa - and thinking how happy I am to have planted it.
And looking at the lilac and if it really is ill, what to put in its place.
Yes this is prime time for Callicarpa. I love them. Is the Lilac in full sun?
I almost wish I had a brand new lawn just for that purpose, Victor. We have large evergreen shrubs at the end of the driveway that something really nice would be better. I don't think DH would consider replacing them.
cross posted
The lilac does not get much sun anymore after nearby trees have grown so much.
That's probably why it's suffering. You can try moving it if it's not too big. In its place there can many possibilities. How much sun does it get?
We went to a nursery (Surfing Hydrangea) yesterday as they had advertized free trees that were "too good to throw out" , but we got there too late, all gone. But DH had me pick out a couple of early Anniversary trees. We got a nice big Pin Oak that was 1/2 price and a multi-stemmed Cornus kousa var. chinensis and then he called our lawn mowing guy to bring them to house next week and plant them as I will be too busy heaving rocks into my new endless stream. Plus they are too big to fit in our truck.
We lost for no apparent reason a big swamp maple this spring, so we had been planning on getting a new tree this fall but now I will have 2 new ones. I am thrilled. Here is our dead tree in June. It was loaded with buds a month before and then it just up and died. A tree man came and pronounced it a lost cause. We will take it down soon. We planted it about 18 years ago. Only good thing is that I can enlarge three beds where it anchored them all and plant more things. I am not planting the new trees in that spot, but slightly further out in a newly (couple of years) area that I carved out of the wild edges of the yard. I have some new peonies to plant already and a couple of new viburnums. Patti
I would say 4-6 hours of sun. It was moved once 20 years ago. Could be my fault it's not doing well as I pruned it hard a few years ago. I did plant some lilacs in another spot last year. I'll dream of possible replacements this winter.
