We went to a nursery (Surfing Hydrangea) yesterday as they had advertized free trees that were "too good to throw out" , but we got there too late, all gone. But DH had me pick out a couple of early Anniversary trees. We got a nice big Pin Oak that was 1/2 price and a multi-stemmed Cornus kousa var. chinensis and then he called our lawn mowing guy to bring them to house next week and plant them as I will be too busy heaving rocks into my new endless stream. Plus they are too big to fit in our truck.

We lost for no apparent reason a big swamp maple this spring, so we had been planning on getting a new tree this fall but now I will have 2 new ones. I am thrilled. Here is our dead tree in June. It was loaded with buds a month before and then it just up and died. A tree man came and pronounced it a lost cause. We will take it down soon. We planted it about 18 years ago. Only good thing is that I can enlarge three beds where it anchored them all and plant more things. I am not planting the new trees in that spot, but slightly further out in a newly (couple of years) area that I carved out of the wild edges of the yard. I have some new peonies to plant already and a couple of new viburnums. Patti
