Show us your Bloomers #2

Wow, I knew wine grew on vines, but I didn't know the corkscrews did too!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Deb, at this point I think I'd be happy with snail vine. I bought a corkscrew vine on sale from Park's and it died 2 days later (came with one leaf...pretty sad). so this season I tried to grow it from seed (also Park's) and it never germinated. I'm getting pretty discouraged. where did you buy yours (and did you complain?)

Don, I always enjoy your poems. the achillea is nice. that's another one that I tried this year that didn't grow. Oh well, something to look forward to next year :)

tam, blurry or not, Andrew looks pretty good to me. what a sweetie! Chicago Peace is one of my all-time favorite roses, too.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

grampapa, I ordered the vine from Michigan Bulb, one of those $20 free coupons, so I wasn't expecting everything to be great. I did not complain. I later ordered corkscrew seeds from Onalee(sp) Seeds, and they didn't germinate. I still have some seeds I was saving to try next year, as I ordered these later this season. Thought I'd try starting them inside over the winter.

Pink Grootendorst is still hanging in there.

Do mini roses do better in the cold? Just curious because mine looked pathetic all year and then once fall came they seem to be blooming their heads off and I have not even been deadheading them?? What is up with this?!!!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

deb, I hear ya. anything's worth a try for free :) at least it grew.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

The Grootendorsts (F.J. and pink) both had a big burst of bloom in July. They have been sporadic since. I'm just glad they are blooming at all. Most of the rugosa roses I know are done in early summer.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

After last night's frost, I'm afraid to look in the garden to see what's still blooming. I'm afraid that it will all be gone.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I think I dodged the frost bullet. I hope - I forgot to take in my jade plant. I'm going out now to check on it.

Here's a dahlia for Al - from my visit to the Westbury Gardens.

Nice Allison.

Allison, are those more (darn) BLOOM-MASTER planters? (I knew the word would come up eventually!) kale in baskets! Wow!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Lost most things last night. Some zinnias survived and dahlias.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Zinnias, kale and hmm watsonia? is that what it's called? I don't do dahlias anymore (thank you, Michaela).

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I went to Vt over the week end and was surprised to see this Monkshood, Aconitum napellus, still blooming away above my beloved Baker Brook. That is the stream I am trying to copy in Nantucket as I so miss the sound of the babbling brook when I am not there. My efforts are coming along. Though it is a little more modest in size. But none the less, my back is still killing me. Tomorrow I get to start the rock work if I get the seaming done. That will be the fun part. I am tired of digging holes! I will post a college of what is happening so far. Patti

Here is my endless stream project so far. The first is the before. I think it looks like a big pile of not much yet. But I am very hopeful. My son was run over by his dad when he was trying to help me move all those rocks, so this has not been a pain free project. My DH found it amusing to see me digging such big holes. He found out today that there is a vacancy at the local cemetery that could use my digging techniques. I thought I might just plant him if he gives me any more grief because I could fit him nicely in that vault hole. No Problem. Patti

Another fall joy is the blooming of snakeroot, Actaea simplex. I had to move a big stand of it to put in my stream bed, but I still have a nice clump in bloom as of today. Patti

The plant is Glory Bush. It's beautiful. I'm hoping I can grow it successfully from seed. I doubt it will wintersow, so I'll start in the house. Supposedly, it's germinates best from fresh seed, so I am guessing that I'll need to sow them soon.
