Beth, if mine is Ukigumo in name as well as in looks, you can add a yes from me - mine has changed to purple now. I'd be interested to know whether yours is really Ukigumo, too. I'm going by Karen-05's pic of Ukigumo for identity.
Morning Glories 2007 #31
Hey, this picture of Ukigumo http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3363989 posted by Gardener2005 is what the true color of the flower should look like. It's true color is simular to Blue Silk MG in that the blue is a very light blue and will not produce a darker blue like in Matsukaze or Seiryu.
This picture posted by Bluespiral http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4107166 has too dark of a blue color and may be just what is was labeled as.
Keiryu will produce both light or dark blue flowers but with more of a blizzard pattern.
Finally, Ukigumo will maintain it's true color even when the flower begins to die and the color does not get darker toward the end of the day. All are very nice JMG flowers.
Dee
I will tell you if you plant open pollinated seeds and cross pollination occured then your vines may not all look like Ukigumo. You could get a darker blizzard flower and green leaf vine resembling the Seiryu or Matsukaze. Karen
the keriyu came from a sealed pack with a picture of a light blue blizzard on the front..from japan ..that i personally opened...not a divided pack that is being offered these days..
even with the commercial japanese packs..you can get something else..but the higher percentages that come out are mostly of a proper description... barring some.
Well, pods have formed and 2 were bagged. Half are now indoors on their stems in water with a tad of H202 under lights and the other half are continuing to ripen outdoors until the very last minute with respect to a frost prediction. Let's all keep our fingers crossed - Keiryu it is. The intensity of flower color has varied quite a bit - very pale lately with a subtle halo just above the throat and occasional thread going out into the limb.
Thanks, everyone, for your feedback.
One of those striped green & gold grasses with the variegated yellow of this one's leaves would be gorgeous climbing up over it. Wonder if there's a smaller version of Miscanthus 'Zebrina' (spelling?)? And, then, there's canna 'Pretoria'...an undercarpet of that autumn, blue-flowered, creeping sage grown at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania...a black-toned Salvia guarnitica in the vicinity...would make quite a pretty blue and yellow color variation in late summer to frost here...
Finally getting some rain here - what a relief! Hope others in the mid-Atlantic are being rained on, too. Looks like a good day to change water/H202 solution in oodles of jars of MG stems with (hopefully!) ripening pods - took 5 hours last time I did it, but then that also involved retying the stems to a "mast" in the jar to keep them from tugging each other out of their jars when I moved them. It worked last year, but still seems an improbable miracle.
And then there are some seed swaps coming due in a few days...does anyone else's house "decor" resemble a tool shed besides mine?
I just have the feeling I opened chops & inserted foot somewhere back a few posts. If so, you are all extremely valuable folks to me and hope you accept an apology from me.
Hi bluespiral, You are cool with me. :)
This is is Gypsy Bride and Wedding Bells just beginning to try and bloom after appearing to be foilage only for a few months. It was still scorching hot at this time but cool enough to bring some of the blooms out of hiding. I`ll try and post a better one of them blooming more later one.
Karen
I don't feel like my "Ukigumo" is close enough to what others have to post it, so I'm not going to. I wish someone with the lighter blue would post one, though. What a shame to have the Plantfiles empty on this nice bloom!
Congrats Jackie!!!
Love the blue stripe all, whatever they may be named!!
Karenblue, lots of rain here in Philly today too, a cold front that is coming in isn't making me a happy camper!!! I'm either dragging in lots of pots or cutting lots of stems!!!
Ron,
I sent you seeds from my Ukigumo last winter. The seeds came from a sealed commercial pack of Ukigumo I bought from komeri on ebay. IIIRC,some were open pollinated and maybe one seed was from a hand tied bloom. Did you get someone to grow them or are they still tucked away in your seed storage? If you sent them to someone to grow this year I`d like to know how they came out.
Beth, Now,about the color. Pictures can make flowers look a little lighter or darker depending on the light they are in and the camera settings. You cannot make definitive decisions on a flower`s color with just pictures different people took on different days with different cameras.
This picture shows the Ukigumo on the right on a cloudy day. The Ukigumo on the left is in bright sunlight and has more white of the progressing blizzard pattern so you cannot see all the striping. Looking at these pictures I do not see a difference that would denote a change in the flowers genetic make up.These are the exact same kind of vines taken on different days in different kinds of light.
Pictures are not totally definitive because flowers can look lighter or darker on different days like sunny or cloudy and with different kinds of cameras that are used.
Beth, did your seed come from a hand tied pod or a open pollinated pod?
This is why I plan on growing flowers for a while and hand tying the pods before trading. It is the only to be sure the cultivar will continue to come true (within a reasonable range of of variations of course) from seeds.

Karen, I think my seed just came from Japan...I have never grown it before so I didnt' know what to expect. I love both those photos, could you post it in Plantfiles to show the variation this bloom might display?
Beth, I`m glad to see more of the gypsy bride too. My Gypsy Bride with the Wedding Bells came from Gerris2. Another Gypsy Bride vine in the back came from you and I have some nice pictures of it putting out a lot of fall blooms. I`ll get them downloaded later on. Your Oreheme is still going and how nice!
About the Ukigumo: This is the late phase blizzard to almost white all on the same vine. Some of the flowers Do look darker than the others and they lighten as the vine matures.
Karen
Beth, Yes, I did post them today but they don`t always show up right away. They will probably show up soon. Make sure you didn`t goof on the plantings. I did the classic tag switch last year and was wondering about some things to say the least! Your flowers are both beautiful. They look like the same kind.
What color are the leaves on both of these Murasaki and Ukigumo? Your Ukigumo, if the seeds came off the Ukigumo, looks like it could be a darker hybrid. One way to test it would be to tie blooms and save some seeds from it and do a test grow. If the seeds came from a Ukigumo and it was open pollinated and the bees crossed the flower then the F2 grow out will show a reappearance of the lighter color blue of the Ukigumo.
Karen
I guess since these are the first seeds of Ukigumo I've ever grown, I dont' have anything to compare them to....but I will watch and see if subsequent blooms get lighter.
Beth, I encourage you to keep growing that one and see if if will continue producing more dark flowers or if it might have more variations to choose from. It would be very nice if it came true from seeds as is. :)
Thanks Ronnie. I had buds form this summer but they just dried up and fell off.
Was only after being placed in the ghouse, that the buds matured. It's cold
here too, high yesterday 49. Down to 57 in the g house at night and Gypsy
seems to like these cooler temps. Love your solid purple flaked and the
unknown purple.
Love the Wedding Bells and your Gypsy Bride too Karen. The purple
blizzard is drop dead gorgeous.
Beth the Oreheme is beautiful. Love all the white blooms with the colored eyes.
So striking.
Blue, the keiryu is a beautiful color
Becky, very pretty No sora
Thanks, Jackie!
Nice blooms everyone! I'm still trying to learn the Japanese names. I don't learn them very good until I have grown a particular cultivar and have that experience under my belt. I still can't figure out how to pronounce the names. lol
I'm really going to have to try my hand at growing them inside when the weather takes a dive on the thermometer in January. We usually get 2, maybe 3 months of chilly weather here. I can't imagine not having any MG blooms to look forward to. I check them out every single morning before I head out to work. I got a surprise this morning as most of my I. nils have been bloomless lately. They look like they are about finished. But this morning several of them had beautiful blooms to greet me! I was quite surprised to see all the color when I went out to check and hand pollinate them! Oh what fun!!!
(Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take any photos to share here today.)
Ronnie - Those are beautiful!!! What is the first one? It looks a little like Gray Fog! Very pretty photo with all the rain drops! It's raining here now, too! Rain, rain, go away, come again another day! (sigh)
Becky, A wonderful lady from GW gave them to me as 'Gray Mist'... I labled it Arums Gray though, after the trader.
Too bad about the Chacha blooming too late to produce seeds. What a nice looking bloom!!!
I do like your Arums Gray (AKA - Gray Mist). I can't get over how pretty the "gray" blooms are! Who would've ever thought gray would make a lovely color for a flower???!!! lol They really are sooooo attractive!! My Gray Fog was the biggest seed producer for me this year! I think every single bloom was pollinated and formed seeds! Amazing vine! Must be nectar-rich! :-)
Looks like a dark Joyce Cobb, Ronnie!
Look at the center bloom here

I assume you are asking about the large bloom and not the white cypress in the background.

Glad to see them bloom! Mine are pretty much water-logged by the rain now. They bloomed all summer, though...
Ronnie -
This is Cypress Vine 'White' Ipomoea quamoclit alba
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4122715
Still haven't had the chance to read much yet -
Soon!
Emma
Ronnie - Whatever your unknown bloom is .... it's quite a pretty bloom! Is it a purpurea or a nil?
Karen - Interesting experiment for this one! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4122934
Emma - I didn't realize that Cypress vine came in white blooms! Very cool!
Thanks beckygardener, It has given me information to use for the future...Karen
