DAILY PICS VOL. 23

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics guys!

Oklahoma City, OK

Wallaby,
Sorry to take so long to reply - I'm at work & do this when I answer the phones in the afternoon then leave at 4:30 for my other job.

I'd love to post my blue bird pictures. I'll need to get my husband to teach me how it's done.

This site is so fun. Your robin pictures have already given much happiness, as have all the others (wow on the woodpeckers). I have already learned so much, I wish I could be on here more.

Brainerd, MN

Great shots all. Love the turkey and owl! Blustry October day - cool and windy. Everybody is hungry.

Even these guys (imagine that) - Triple Trouble!

Thanks Deb, the Robin here isn't usually that friendly, but is interested when I'm digging in the garden. I think the one that sat on my neighbour's knee would become very friendly IF it gets to hang around, they are territorial so I guess even the young have to find their own. I think I have said this before, your Thrashes look like our Thrushes!

planthappiness, that must be a bind to have to work instead of having fun! If you know how to put your pics on your computer all you have to do to upload here is click the 'Browse' button at the bottom of your reply and select a pic from your picture folders, a click on a pic will put the link there.

I'm loving all these pics of Woodpeckers too, debilu that owl is peeking out back at you!

sybil, what are the little birds in your first pic (I recognise the squirrels!).

I have some squirrels which sit on the blue tit nest box, one recently had a double nut case of something I don't recognise, it chewed them apart after going to the ground, took one to bury amongst the iris at the water side then ran back up the tree for a while before scooting off. I guess an occasional squirrel is allowed here!
I like the devillish look of this one with the white eye effect.

Wallaby 1 - In my first pic above, here are the members of the feeding frenzy:

On the left - Chickadee and Downy Woodpecker
On the right - Nuthatch and another Chickadee

Here is another pic of a Nuthatch and the woodpecker.

Squirrels - Tree Hogs! :)

Brainerd, MN

I missed the little Chickadee in that second pic. It's sitting on the tree branch above the feeder.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Thanks sybil for the clarification, I was getting confused!

Marlton, NJ

Such cute pics sybil!

I love your feeders!

Do they both drain real well?

Brainerd, MN

Hi pelletory - Yes, they do. The peanut feeder I purchased mid-summer after someone on Dave's talked about them. It's been a joy! And, it's very easy to clean because it's all open.

The giant seed feeder I put up recently in preparation for winter. The bottom is removable - all parts are removable - and the sides are screen so it's great for clingers and also for drying damp seed.

So far I'm really happy with it and I've heard no complaints from the diners!

Little cold for a dip, don't you think? In MN, 40 degrees and colder, we call this Chilly Dipping.

...when along came a spider (dressed in the newest trend of Halloween costumes - this squirrel suit seems to be all the rage this year) and frightened Miss Muffet right down her tree!

Kinda timid for such a big bird...!

You people with pileateds in your backyard really think you're something, don't you?!?!? :)

Brainerd, MN

We are the best people. Absolutely! LOL

Slidell, LA(Zone 8a)

They are so lucky to have them come down so low on the trees. Here in Slidell, La. we see them maybe once a year but usually much higher up. With one exception when I heard a very loud noise on my back yard gate and went out to see what all the racket was and the pair of them saw me and flew up to a nearby tree. That was the lowest down I had ever had the privilege to see them.

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics sybil!!!

Okay I'll admit it I'm green with envy. :-)

Thanks for posting the pics! Pelle

Are those actual peanuts or peanut flavored suet 'nuggets', sybil!?

Marlton, NJ

Looks like peanut halves to me with the dark and light sides showing.

Brainerd, MN

I am being far too creative with my story telling today - actual peanuts! :)

Although, I would imagine that peanut butter and suet mixed together would be quite a hit in the feathered friend world.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

I finally got a pic of the hawk that has been terrorizing my birds. Not a very good pic though.

Sorry to hear the Coopers is frightening your backyard birds Frank!

Has he been hanging around all the time?

When mummur used the word 'exquisite' to describe my last hummer pic, I felt uncomfortable. I now believe that she may have an artistic sense that I lack.

That pic just won me my first ever POTD in the stiffest international competition available to me.

Please forgive my shameless bragging...

Congratulations! Beautiful shot! Thanks for sharing your accomplishment.

You're kind, Janet.

I guess you understand my newbie excitement that caused me to make such a post.

Oh well...

Dave

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave, though I many not have always commented on them, I've always noticed how crisp and clear your photos are. You can just about count the feathers on your birds. I can never get that close to them and while I have a decent zoom 12X on my Sony, I still can't get the quality of photos that you do.

Ain't nothing wrong about sharing your glory. If ya can't share it, why try to achieve it? You earned it! :-)

Northern, IN

Thanks again.

As one photographer to another, I can tell you that only my TCON-17 teleconverter makes this detail possible.

Brainerd, MN

Congratulations!

Northern, IN

Thanks sybil. I feel like I've just had my first child (again).

I guess it's time for an early nap.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I missed that photo, Dave, so I'm so glad you posted your success! 'Exquisite' was the right comment. :-)

Oklahoma City, OK

I concur w/kaperc - 'exquisite' is the perfect word for your blue-eyed beauty. What a picture! Congrats to ya, Dave. Thanks so much.

Please forgive if this is a dumb question, debilu, but it looks like you got you owl in the daytime. Is that true? I thought they only come out at night.

Thanks for the advice on loading pics, Wallaby. I hope to get it figured out soon.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was surprised to see the owl during the day too, my DH spotted it flying in the woods, and we weren't sure what it was until it landed and we got a little closer. First time I saw one in the wild. It was around 8am.
I don't know their usual habits though.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

sybil, love the photos of the Pileated!!

Congratulations, dave!!!

Have spotted a new finch(I think) at the feeder. I think it may just be passing through. I am not sure of an ID. Stouter then a housefinch and orange(like a pumpkin color) band around the head and on chest and on its back. No photo....

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Adding my congrats to you too Dave! Nice pic!

Nice Pilieated Woody too sybil, it's quite a showy bird!

f_chisolm, it's not a bad picture of the hawk, you were lucky to have got it! I like the breast markings.

Well, I think I mentioned I had Magpies around, today I got some pics of one! It was some way off but they turned out OK.

Nice! We don't have those around here.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

This one shows how long the tail is, even I was surprised at the length, you don't see them sat for long usually.

Thumbnail by wallaby1
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

They are quite a large bird sybil, and they can be a nuisance when young birds are in the nest, but they are part of nature.

I snapped just on lift off, so got it just in flight.

This is the full view, I was on full 200mm digital zoom (equiv to 300mm)

Congratulations Dave!! I'm so proud of you! I'm not surprised at all that happened ; you are quite a talented fella!

Wallaby- Very nice pics! They are such a striking looking bird!

Thanks for posting them!
