BOOOOOINNNNNNNNNNNNG! (my eyeballs leaving their sockets!) THOSE are some DJ Photo contest winners! Amanda! WOW!
Sequee you can plant seeds anytime, you just have to be willing and able to tend to them all winter if you plant, now. They'll have to be kept inside till spring. I started some in January 3 years ago, they were ready to set out in May...
here is the one I ended up with 3 years later- it didn't bloom the first year - it's in the ground this year.
I think I'm going to lose my Brugs! What am I doing wrong? 2
Oh, she's lovely! I grew a bunch of Rosamond from seed a few years ago, but i can't remember when I started them. I gave most of them away, but the 2 I kept still haven't bloomed. They got big and lush this year, so I'm sure they will produce next season. (The only seeds I have are from Rosamond, but what the hey - I may as well plant them, right?)
PS - Does the same apply to Hibiscus, or should I wait on those for a bit?
Hib from seed, .... I started mine in January, too. I started some vines that year, and too early and was plagued by mites till I could get them all outside. So, I guess I like to wait so I have less time to deal with mites that way. But you may not have that experience.
After "the year of the aphids" I swore i would NEVER have a brug inside the house again. Didn't realize the hibs had issues, too.
Guess I will try patience on for size!
I don't think hibiscus are as bad as brugs about mites, but I try not to have to deal with them, if I can. Seems like if one thing gets them, it soon spreads to more, before you even know there's a problem..
Ha ha, thanks, guys! I thought they were kinda neat, too. :)
AuntB - so what do you do if you get mites on a Brug ondoors? How do you treat it?
Open back door, TOSS plant out. LOL NO, NO, just kidding... but sometimes I do. You can feed them that Bayer 3 in 1 or some kind of insecticide or you can spray with a mitacide and/or try H2O2 formula. If it's a small plant you can wash out with sink sprayer or put in shower, but make sure you get back and front of the leaves. There is much discussion on the subject. I mist with water occasionally, mites don't like water... I like to stay as "organic" as possible, but I usually fight them with some chemical, mine are NOT in my living area, but in the basement.. I also put worm castings in with the potting mix, I've read that helps... WISH I could say, Oh, Amanda, just dilute some ketchup 1 to 4 with water and while watering with it click your heals and say 3 times "There's no more spider mite" and they'll be gone! Sadly, there's no sure fire way, that I know of.
Aunt B, you are such a Hoot! I think I can I think I can I think I can, hey it worked. My brug that lost the leaves and had a couple of sickly buds are about to bloom. Thanks Doc.
As for the Wilt Pruf, I did use it and don't know that there were any results good or bad on the brugs. There was results on the evergreens though. I'll continue to use the Safer's products on my brugs, that works and doesn't have any adverse affects.
Ha ha ha ha!! Yeah, then I'd say, "Ketchup? I'm heading for Wal-Mart now!" I can hear it "Cleaup on aisle 7 - we've got a lady tryin' ta spray our plants with ketchup."
lol!!!!! if you can bear the smell, spray with neem oil i the garage.
Oh yes, diehrd, you are right about that one. Whew - I sprayed that outside on some of my hibs in the front and I didn't want to use my front door for about 3-4 days.
Hi EVERYone! Diane, that IS strange about your brug, does it have many leaves growing back? Sickly buds... I don't like the sound of that... I found some Neem Oil conscentrate stuff at Lowes a couple weeks ago, never used the stuff before... I thought it had a citrusy smell to it, it was around $12 and made up to 16 gallons, ... better than the Anti-Stress 2000 I tried- it smelled bad...
Aunt B, those itzy bitzy buds that you saw with the brown spots, those are now fixing to open. Lots of leaves are back, not overly large but plentiful. Very strange, but who I am to complain, she made it through her 'flu'. I've used and do use Neem Oil as an alternative. Citrusy smell, perhaps, but in a large dose, not too pleasant.
Diane-
Congrats on your baby bloom buds!!! Do you know what the bloom color will be? Nice that your leaves are growing back ---when my brug cutting started growing leaves I was so excited but now that it started blooming (2nd "flush" pretty soon!!!) I remove the "bigger" leaves so that the flowers can show themselves off. LOL--- excited re: first teeny, tiny leaves coming out of a cutting and then I'm removing leaves!!!!
Hi AuntieB, Amanda, TL, Kim, Tracie!!!
Sequee---Noticed your comment re: aphids and hibs...do you overwinter tropical hibs? I've got some newly harvested seed from my Pink Hardy Hibiscus---and, if you're interested, I could send some of my seeds to you...LMK!
Just "ME"...Jan...lurking...LOL!!!
Jan, just lurking :), I have 2 brugs that are suppose to be Super Nova. I say suppose to be because their blooms are white but on one of the flushes it was a peachy color, so I'm not certain. I have in possession a new Santa Rosa, quite excited about that one. She's in my greenhouse until next spring and about 20" tall but I already have new leaf growth. One of my brugs that had had a full flush of blooms and leafed out, suddenly dropped almost all the leaves and I was shocked and concerned. Aunt B helped with her magic wand and a few days later I had new leaves starting to grow. It really is/was quite odd. There were 2 buds on it, small about 2" is all when the leaves started dropping and they hung on and are now fixing to open.
hey jan......
oh i cant wait! the white should bloom tomorrow i think

Kim! She IS beautiful - Maybe you can nickname her "Red"... very lovely- nice form and tendrils... and enjoyable but the point is: It's really very mean to sell something for what it isn't. I've only bought brug seed on ebay, I like to trade for cuttings OR I have bought brugs from Logees and Cottage Gardens... and I always check out DG watchdog when I want to purchase from a "new" company. How many days has the skirt been fluffed out? Maybe we need give her a couple more days and see. I really don't think it will turn red, but we must be patient..
Come on Kim, be a zone-pusher... you can grow them in PA, just takes a 'little' more effort. Have you stopped in over at the Hibiscus forum, tropical hibiscus really compliment brugs very well? lol Look at it! Is that orangish??? (yellow to orange, orange to red) I'm still hopeful, but even if it's not, I think it's beautiful! Thanks for posting the update and I'm happy to make you smile! Be sure to let us know if you start seeing red!
Kim---altho your brug isn't red it is still a beautiful color and form! You have a lovely, colorful garden.
a BIG "HELLO" to everyone else!!!
Jan...who still has not gotten her plant room in basement cleaned up and all the "trops" are STILL outside...brug, dats, tropical hib bloom buds are still hanging on...teasing me...sigh! tuberous begonias, fuschsias, dbl impatiens, cannas are all still blooming their little plant hearts out...yes!! raining, again, for the 5th day in a row, but much preferred rather than the alternative...!!!
JanLynn thankyou very much!!
Kim - soooo pretty!! Don't you just love Brugs?
Big hello, Jan!! ;)
Hello to you Jan, yes i am quite smitten...dreaming of next season already:0) Kim
Just think of how "short" the winter season will be and how fast the time will go by because we'll all be planning our fantastic gardens for next year. POSITIVE thinking/energy vs. NEGATIVITY!!!
We still have two more weekends left of the camping season and then I'll have more time to get my garden pictures together and, get some posted hopefully, then WATCH OUT for lotsa MY PICTURES of MY GARDEN...
...oopsies...perhaps I should have a bowl of milk now---MEOW!!!
I am sooo bad :)
Naw, you a goood kitty ;)
............PURRRRRRRRRRRRR........................
ACKKKK!!! ...errrr...want a hairball for your garden.........?!
That's a girl, Kim .... Push that zone! I see your hib, very pretty... I can't chose a fav, brug or hib? Can you? Can anybody? Jan! I'm sooooooooooo happy to find you here today. I love your pretty kitty... here's my Missy - she's spoiled rotten! From a couple weeks ago, she's in pursuit of sphinx moths I was taking pics of.... Bad Missy! She never did catch one!
hey all yall! it looks as if the newbie brug will bloom tonight!
AuntB I like Missy, spoiled is good. I got 2 brats Cleo and Katrina rotten to the core!!Them brugs look SCRUMPTIOUS. I don't think we have those moths here.No I can't choose brug or hib.
TL? I wanna see it... which newbie do you have? Is it a mystery color? Yep, spoiled IS good. Kim, I can't chose either, here's a pink moth, some are yellow.. they are tomato worms before they transform into the moths. They arrived in August and I still see them at night, but not swarming like they were... I think the scent of brugs and moonvine is what lures them in... but I've seen them snacking on hibiscus and passionflower nectar...
Yup---here I am!!! I've got a "little" boy kitty, Dusty, and two VERY SPOILED ROTTEN beagles, Molly and Maggie (henceforth known as "the girls"). I HAVE to get some pictures posted... :(
I'll be back sometime Monday with more...OK?!
Youse "guyz" have a good weekend!!!
Just "ME"...Jan
Oh, that's awful! Everyone was all pepped up for it too! The only thing worse would be the horrible rain on your brug! You need to get a pic of if before the rain comes, TL! We neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed some new blooms to see. JanLynn, you are already camping, you're enjoying the season, we look forward to you getting back AND posting some pics.
AuntB i don"t know if them critters is cute or creepy LOL
