Hulk Aster
One-of-a-Kind Beautiful!
These huge blooms are perfect for cutting!

How's this for showy? This amazing Aster sports giant blooms in an utterly unique color pattern: green and yellow! But the best part is that they're perfect for cutting -- long-lasting, sturdy, and lovely! If you appreciate full vases of flowers from the garden all summer long, Hulk is the Aster to rely on!

The interesting thing about these blooms is that they have no petals -- the 2-inch yellow center is really the entire flower, surrounded by 3 more inches or so of green bracts that look like curled petals. The bracts are quite long-lasting, adding to the staying power of these blooms.

Hulk is easy to grow in full sun and any moist garden soil. The plant reaches 21 inches high and 14 to 16 inches wide, with good side branching (for more blooms!) and a neat, upright habit. Ideal for the cutting garden, beds, borders, the patio, and containers.

Space plants about 12 inches apart for dense coverage

I feel sill for posting this, but this plant is new to me. I am having a lot of trouble figuring out what is seed on the ech. purp 'Razzmatazz' . I may have to not include. I had it already sorted, but when I looked again, it just didn't look right. I consulted Hortus III to see and I think I have a better idea, but then it doesn't seem totally clear. My wireless was down all day yesterday, so this has been driving me crazy!!! Any insight?-Kath

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Of, course I meant to say silly! The list looks amazing! And the Aster, too!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I grew the hulk this year and never saw a bloom the plant didn't do very well too much of a drought I guess :(

I like that list too :)

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Hubby bought my wish list from Thompson and Morgans for my birthday this past January. Included was the Hulk Aster.
I started the seed early indoors and transplanted the end of May, like most things in Michigan.
I had 4 plants, and I planted all 4. 2 in containers, which was a mistake. Long and lanky, but they did manage to produce flowers and lots of seeds!
I planted the other 2 in a barrel with my voodoo lilies. Also got long and lanky but the many seeds I got from them is amazing, especially since I originally got like 6 seeds and thought they must not produce much seed. LOL....
this year my wish list will include lilliput blue moon aster.

With regrets I must say -please take my name off the list. I was unable to get anything ready last night (I won't go into that story here) and as I look through the list I find many that would be fun to try, but all of the ones that I have that might be interesting and unusual are already on the list except for one. Maybe I will 'catch' another swap. I participated in one last year I had more fun than a kid at Christmas time!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Theresa, I bet your weather is perfect for asters being a little cooler there. I love asters but our weather is so humid I grow a few but they don't do their best for me and this year was the worst hot, dry and humid!
Lea

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

seedsower asked: ...I was wondering myself whether or not Theresa was going to keep our "zone" in mind when deciding which seeds to send. That would take a lot of work though I'd imagine~
yes, I sure will be! yup, lots of work, but I have lots of free time to devote to gardening :) and garden friends :)
As the seeds come in I am logging them in and finding info and zone.
Here's an example of what I have done:
Ehemanii Canna-http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/37158/ zone 8
When all the seeds arrive Im thinking of some kind of lottery so that everyone can choose some of the seeds they want. Does this sound appealing to everyone???

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

basket_case,
Just because they are on the list doesn't mean we will all get those seeds I'm sure a few of us will have doubles of what is there that just means everyone will have a shot of getting one of those seed packets :) Please stay in and enjoy the swap! :) Get your seeds done and send them in :)

Hope I'm not over stepping my bounds here but hate to see someone drop out!
Lea

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Lea, your right, the weather up here is perfect for asters!
I have a new one called Toucan Tango that was just beautiful!

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

BASKET CASE!!!! Please do not drop out. This list is only for the 7 people that have sent them so far. I have at least a dozen more participants with seeds on the way. Im confident there will be a large assortment beyond what I have listed so far.
I also have many more unusual seeds of my own to use if there are many of one selection.
PLEASE join in the fun....I would be sick thinking you missed out on 'christmas'!!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

That aster is beautiful! I love it! Is it a perennial?

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

yes, it is a perennial. going out now to see if there are any seeds I can get from it.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Please do that!!! LOL I have some of these just getting ready to collect them but we have had 5 1/4 inches of rain in a little over two days so it might be next week before they are dry :) How about a trade, she says with a smile :)

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

sure Lea. I looked at your list and I have hot lips chelone too. Well, when they decide to seed.
I'll dmail ya.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Sounds good to me, thanks!

Backus, MN

Hey Gardening Gang,
thanks for all the encouragement. I will see what I can scrape together tonight - outside forces allowing-!! I will probably be the last one in, so I will try to include as much info as possible saving you all the research time, Theresa. Let the Christmas festivities begin! - I do enjoy giving just as much as receiving -- REALLY!!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

You go girl, I'm just mailing mine today lol

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Me too. I hold an annual bulb swap and its my favorite swap of the year!
I think this one is fun too! I get to learn about a bunch of neat plants I may have never heard of before, and get the opportunity to grow some of them.
I too like the unusual. I really enjoy someone saying wow, I never saw anything like that before.
I have a couple old farmer friends that flower garden and I give them unusual seeds to try. They always get a kick out it.

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Theres still another week before I need to have all the seeds here. :)

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Theresa, I am quite interested in seeds from the "Toucan Tango' Aster well. WiIl they be part of this trade if dry? (Please, please, please!)-Kath

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow! What a list. I saw one that I'm sending on that list. I'll send it anyway so someone can have it.

Love the idea of a lottery Theresa.

basket_case, I'm so glad you're staying.
I'm still working on my seeds but the plan is to get them out by the weeks end.

flowerhead410, You might not be finding the seeds on your Razzmatazz because those are hybrids. They could be sterile, but even if they have seed they wouldn't come true.

Joy

Backus, MN

Hey, I am willing to try the 'hybrids seeds'. I have my own greenhouse and lots of planting area so I am willing to try anything. I never met a flower I didn't like. I am so generous that I even like the flowers on some weeds....as long as they are not in MY garden!! and as far as whether or not they will even germinate.....well, I just recycle the pottting soil after awhile and start something else!! Of course no one ever hears about the -- oooh, dare I say the f word (failures), in this company??

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

So.. I did find the razzmatazz seeds.(although not many after thinking I found them and then throwing away spare parts) Then I looked at what I collected days later and thought they were not right, but those next two heads didn't seed up well, so there were only three seeds which confused me when I was looking for seeds. I know they are hybrid, but I did find on garden web someone who planted 10 and had 3 that had the razzmatazz features. I had read this prior to looking for the seeds, so I knew they were there, then I found a good posting here on Dave's that showed a pic of the seeds with a penny. So now I'm sure! The amethyst-in-snow centurea seems to have seeded in with some features as well, but I'm just not sure if it's from seed or if the offshoots lose some of the features. It's hard with those to tell if it is a seedling or offshoot. I potted up 10 of what I thought were obvious offshoots of the amethyst to see what qualities they have. As I said above though I have found some with light purple not white outer leaves with a dark purple middle, so maybe there would be a cool in between "Razzmatazz'?? Who knows? But I think it will be fun trying. I agree with basket that if I'm willing to try I figure others will be excited to as well. Don't worry though I'll have juicy good things for those of you who aren't drawn in by the flashy 'Razzmatazz'. (which looked quite lovely paired up with simple feverfew and the new foxglove 'Spice Island' (which I never grabbed seeds from-woops)-Kath

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

That's Interesting what you found out about the Razzmatazz. I grew some things from hybrids before and while I didn't get the exact looking plant that they came from, I did get some interesting flowers. It is fun to try. :-)

I got all the seeds together much faster than I thought I would. I have them ready to go and will try to get them mailed off this afternoon. If not, they'll go out tomorrow with my mail carrier.

Joy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You got some good selections so far from everyone! Looks like it is going to be a great swap!

Let me know when you get my seeds, please.

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Ocean Springs, MS

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

She'll be sorry for showing off those lovelies!!!

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

I dropped mine off at a post box this evening. It probably won't be picked up until the morning though.

Theresa, I forgot a couple things you asked us to do though. I reread the instructions tonight but should have reread it before I mailed. I forgot to include my member name but it's just my name (Joy) and I didn't include an email. Sorry. I'm usually pretty good at following instructions.
I did put my name on the seeds though.

Joy

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

thats ok Joy. if you could email me your email address to gardenbabe@comcast.net please

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yikes - well I did include my user name - and my email address - but I didn't put my email address on each envelope.

recepients of my seeds can contact me via d-mail. Besides, mine are, well, not that unusual (I tried!)
