Smockette the Ice Cream buckets under the potting table have all my different things I need for my soil mixes. I ate all the Ice cream and gained 20 pounds. LOL
I figured you had a good 'second' use for them! Also, figured where that ice cream went! lol
:~)
Is anyone bringing peonies? I don't have any as of now and really would like to try some in my flower garden.
Mitch, do you want more of the eastern red cedars. I have dug a lotta, lotta smaller ones.
Charlene
Carlene - would love them...
yes i want some red buckeye seeds. what a find.
I would like some seeds too.
and i am NOT an expert by any stretch of the imagination but last year i got some of these seeds thru the mail. she sent to me in moist potting soil. i put them in a plastic jug full of moist potting soil and left them in the refrigerator all winter. long 'bout feb. i took them out and let them sit outside. i had 4 seeds and 3 of them germinated. so.......i said all that to say i wonder if they need to be kept moist? i gave all but one of the plants away and this summer my plant i hope went dormant because it disappeared. the plant trunk is still there and is not brittle so i am hoping it comes up next year. does anyone know anything else about them?
Should i put these in moist soil for ya'll? i just pulled them out of their pods today, so they are fresh. I've never grown them from seed, but my tree doesn't receive water from me and is in full sun, every year it goes dormant and looses all its leaves around late July. It's about 15 years old and not much bigger than 10x10'.
cocoa........you are saying that your 15 yr. old tree goes dormant in the summer? and that it comes back to life in the fall and produces seed pods?
so it is likely that my tree is not dead? that's what you are saying, isn't it? i hope you are right.
and i don't have a clue whether they need to be moist or not. the girl that sent them to me last year was in north carolina or virginia and that is what she told me. she sent them to me moist and i kept them moist and i had good germination. they might have the same germination if they were kept dry i just don't know.
Yep, just the leaves fall off in the Summer, the seed pods never really fall off they just get larger and ripe in the Fall. If you could see my tree you would think it was dead too.lol
I'll go ahead and put these in soil, it doesn't sound like it will hurt them. Maybe it will jump start them.
You are doing the right thing, the seeds should be planted as soon as possible. I have a red Buckeye too, but mine doesn't defoliate in the summer because it is in part shade and because I water it.
Mamajack, your seedling is probably alright, just keep it moist, and it should come back in the spring.
Josephine.
I did some reading up on starting trees form the seeds like pecans and you are suppose to put them in the frig in moist sand or soil mix then bring them out for them to sprout....gonna go look for that site again and will post it for ya.
Here we go this is one of the places I read about how to start trees from seeds
http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1012/F-6207web.pdf
I don't chill my red buckeye seeds, just plant them the sooner the better, they get very hard and dry if you don't.
Does anyone have any pretty begonias they could get cuttings from?
there is someone over on one of our other threads that apparently has just come on the scene. i don't even know if anyone else is watching any of the old threads we had for this event. but i don't know how to get them over here.
I saw it and posted the link to this thread ..hope I did it right
pbtxlady, How about some coneflower for begonia? I don't know the name of it, but I am trying to root it now. It has large triangle shaped leaves and georgeous red flowers.
Charlene
Mitch, (or anyone who needs them) how about cedar elm trees? I have lots of them and they are fast growing trees and make a good shade tree.
I also have lots of sweetgum trees if anyone needs them.
Trees for irises, brugs, roses including cuttings since I will be taking the rose propagation 101 class at the RU would be great.
I would like to get a Sweetgum from you Charlene. Let me know what you would like.
Pbtxlady I will bring a begonia I have for you.
Sheila, I have got you covered on the sweetgum. I don't need anything else from you as you are already bringing me several things.
Charlene
Melva, I have tons of pots, mostly gallon and 4". I will bring them for you and anyone else who needs some.
I updated my list with a few more things that have rooted.
someone has something called TURTLE VINE. WHAT IS THAT? also, what's a cedar elm? i want some of those trees if you have enough. sweetgum too. and as many as you want to dig. my sister has some property that needs trees. how long does it take sweetgum to grow? those were so much fun when we were kids.
Oh, yeah! Some of my best kid memories are the great sweetgum ball fights. I had to plant one so I could teach my own kid their real purpose. :)
Thanks, Charlene and Sheila, for the begonias. Charlene, I'm adding you to the coneflower list.
