Fall 2007 Seed Swap

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Lala_Jane: Love your photos! I love ornamental grasses but I am in a new house this year and I don't have anything to swap. However, I do have six plants of the Flamenco Torch Lily--are you familiar with it? If you are, maybe you could tell me how I could get seeds from it next summer. The blooms all seem to be gone for the year and I didn't even think to save them. I'll send along a photo of the torch lily in bloom. You can see them blooming on the right side of the photo.

Can someone tell me how to save seeds from petunias--I have never done it before and I do have some pink and purple wave petunias still blooming. thanks.--maybe there's a thread somewhere that addresses the subject on how to save seeds?

Marsue~ I'm not sure if wave petunias set seed, mine never did...But for regular petunias , I let the petunia blooms fade and you'll see little green pods developing...let the green pods develop till a golden brown, when you notice the pod opening a bit , Snip the pod off with scissors. Over a paper plate or paper towel, scrape the seeds out with tweezers, then let the seeds dry for several days. The seeds are numerous and very tiny. Have fun, if your petunias are hybrids, you will experience color and height variations. Hope this helps..;0)

Thanks for the info, garden6---I'm certainly going to give it a try.

Hi marsue,

Your torch lilies are beaurtiful! I'm afaid I don't know anything about saving seeds with them though. Garden6 gave you some great tips for saving your petunia seeds. My waves did set seed last year, but their offspring grew more upright and didn't cascade as the did the original plants.

I don't know if you've found it, but there is a whole forum here dedicated to saving seeds http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/seedsaving/all/

Another link that I've found invaluable in seed collection is http://theseedsite.co.uk/

Good luck!

Include me in! (if it's not too late...)

And do you want us to write our zone on the seed packets? How about shade/sun?

I'm very excited; I'm on the list. Now to set aside those special seeds. . .

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

La, I'm very interested in ornamental grasses. I've been a little reluctant to plant any because we have Canada geese and they will eat anything that resembles any kind of grass. But I w/s'd some angel spray (a dwarf muhlenbergia) last year. I have a tomato cage around it until it gets bigger.

Anyway, I'd love to have some. I'll just cage 'em in.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

OK revclaus, you're in! Jan, make a note of that in your packet, and I'll make sure the grass seed goes to you.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

You've got it Jan. Unfortunately I only have tags for a couple of them anymore, but I will be very descriptive on the packages. The cabetet grass is towering well over 8' now but the strawberry cream will only get to be 3-4' I'll be sure to let you know which is which so you know what you want to plant where.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Anita. I'll do that.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

(DD #1 does NOT have a cast; apparently there's too much risk of loss of ROM. The Tylenol #3 keeps her up all night, but, then, so does pain. She seems much better though, and got one of the lead parts in Oklahoma! auditioning with a broken arm!)

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Lala, thanks for the hyperlink. All you guys have inspired me to start collecting seeds! I got a few from my petunias today, garden6. They are very tiny but I will give them a try. Also went over to a friend's house and got about 6 seeds from a yellow lily of some kind--she didn't know what it was, just a yellow lily. I'm hoping they are Stella d'Oro--will have to wait till next summer to find out! She also had some Gerbera daisies and I was able to get lots of seed. So my seed collecting has begun! I didn't find this site until yesterday--wish I had found it earlier--I could have started collecting sooner and maybe I would have had some to share. Well, there is always next year. :o)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I can SEND you some stella d'oros if you like, marsue. Not sure if Gerber daisies come true from seed, or not. Do you mean you just found the wintersowing form, or you just found davesgarden?

xx, C

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, carrie. I would love some Stellad'Oros. You can d-mail me about the particulars. I mean I just found the wintersowing forum. I found DG back in May of this year and joined but I didn't become active on it until just about 10 days ago. I've already "met" so many nice people! DG is great!

Great job Marsue!!.. you'll be happy with W/Sing those petunias in the Spring rather than buying them!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Just about to mail my seeds when I reread the instructions. Do you want 10 packages of different types of seeds? or 10 packages of the same seed? Or some combination? Of course, all the seeds have to be types that can be winter sown.

I need to know, because if I have to come up with 10 different kinds of seeds, it may take a bit longer.

Cheers,
Michaela

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for bumping this, Michaela!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

10 Different Michaela. Thanks.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay - well, it will take a bit longer for me to get the seeds sorted out :-)

Glad I checked first.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Glad you keep bumping this thread!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

They aren't due for another month, though, so that's good.

Suzy

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

No kidding it's good! Just keep bumping for me every few days.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I know, I keep changing my mind on what to send LOL

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I sent off my seeds, but just realized I didn't include a list of what I sent. That was after I remembered I hadn't included a mailing label to myself. My head isn't where it should be at the moment. At least I clearly labeled everything I sent! My apologies to Anita.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Anita Did you get a packet of seeds from me? I may have lost your packet somewhere.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Sorry, Anita, feeling a bit dim today. I will need to buy TWO (2) $1.50 stamps, one for the trip there and one for the trip back to me, NOT ten, right?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Shouldn't be problem revclaus.
Dylancgc- I've been marking this thread when I recieve packages.
Yes Carrie - return postage is most appreciated.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks I looked back and you have gotten mine.

(Zone 7a)

DH sent my seeds yesterday - fortunately, I discovered the wrong trade was in Anita's envelope before sending it - pretty close call, though

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Carrie if I'm understanding your question correctly, you only need to send Anita the same amount of postage it took to mail the package to her in the first place. If it cost $1.50 to send it to her you need to enclose an additional $1.50 for return postage. (Right Anita?)

La

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Think I got it.

xx, Carrie

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

yup

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

So, there's no way for me to get 10 glassine envelopes - wal-mart is not one of those places I go, and I'm not even sure where there is one. Do they have something I could use at Staples, maybe? We go there, sometimes. Or does one of you nice people want to send me 10 glassine envelopes? I think they have those little brown paper envelopes you lick closed at staples....

would those do?

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

I always use the brown paper envelopes. Plastic makes moldy seeds.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

But I don't need 500!

Winterville, GA(Zone 8a)

Anita,
Got my envie ready to go in tomorrow's mail.
JoAnn

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Carrie, why not cut some up out of envelopes if you dont have very many?
Or download some free cute ones to make?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I know you can make them - but are those, er, seed-tight? There are a bunch of DG designs around here somewhere... dang, where did I put them?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I found them, I found them! Yeah! Hip, hip, hooray! Now all I need to do is cut them out and glue them up and start filling them...

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Have fun Carrie. By the way - the craft stores sell the small plastice baggies too. Remember, you'll probably swap seed again in the future. They are also good for storing your own seed in. So there really is no such thing as having too many seed envelopes.
