October blooms

(Zone 1)

Gail, my friend .... you had a very successful shopping trip didn't you? You've really got some beauties there! I love the looks of that Epiphyllum! Is it E. oxypetalum "Queen of the Night"??? You will love the blooms on that one ... and it's supposed to be very fragrant!

Next time you go plant shopping, I wanna come to Texas and go with you! That Hoya that you call Cinnamon .... is it supposed to smell like cinnamon?! Oh, how wonderful that would be!

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Yep Gail, just a mere 2000 miles each way! :0)

Oh wow, your 8 hours closer Lin, I say go for it!! Just one really long day of driving, piece of cake!! LOL

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous plants! Did you have any trouble seeing how to drive with all the foliage around you? Hope you had some help getting everything unloaded.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I wish you all were here to shop with me. Lin, you have an easy trip from Florida. My daughter and her family drove it for the first time this year as they go to Destin each year to see the other grandfather. They said they had fun doing it with the kids as they just kept movies going the whole way.

I just had a senior moment. I can't remember if it is Destin or Desden....What is it Lin?

I have pics for the begonias from Green Gate and I have orchids from Hill Country AFrican Violet Nursery, too. But, I don't have them tonight. Of course I have pics for the AV forum!

Sure glad there wasn't any more room in the car or I could have done some serious damage (LOL)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am still running on adrenalin, Shirley!! When I came home, I watered all the plants outside, unloaded all the luggage from my car and then unloaded all the plants.

Since then I have unpacked and washed all my clothes and hung them up to dry.

Right!!??? I have someone to help....not a chance (LOL)

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Ha! I'M only 7hours 22minutes away! Not that it does me any good!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Diane, that isn't even a drive! I used to drive every summer with all the kids from Corpus Christi to Cloudcroft, NM with a group of friends. We caravaned all the way 13 1/2 hours without stopping more than 3 or 4 times in one day.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

gail- you're a brave woman,what can I say!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No, thanks for the compliment but I think it has more to do with being a single mom all their lives and just doing what I wanted when I wanted. Nothing seemed to stop me then or now at the ripe old age of 65!

But do confess that on the trip, I took two hard falls (LOL) and my body looks like someone beat me up. I had picked up a jacket for my sister in law on our shopping spree and took it to her this afternoon to show her my bruises. We both started laughing so hard!! Even my hands have those horrible reddish purple spots that old ladies get (still laffin')

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I have 3 kids and married someone with 3 kids. They're grown now (17 youngest) His kids came tolive with us unexpectedly a few months after we got married. I had a little Chev Corsica that we piled all they're little butts in for road trips. Can you imagine? Did that until they're butts got to big to fit the seats and the car was so worn out it would'nt make it up small hills!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

You fell on the trip today? I'm sorry- that's no fun! What we plant lovers are willing to go thru!

Philomath, OR

Gosh, it will only take me 33 hours and 20 minutes to make the 2296.43 miles! Do you take in overnight guests? :~) Love your new plants, good luck with them! God bless, -joanne

North Augusta, ON

ok--just had to check---would take me 29 hours and 20 min. to get there---maybe I'll just move to Texas---that was Yahoo maps

Mapquest tells me 31+ hours---wonder where the other 2 hours are?

joanne and threegardeners,

This wouldn't be so funny except that I have fallen in love with hoyas and still know nothing!
My time always ends up being used on my gro light stands full of the gesneriad family.

Everyone needs to come to Seguin for a reunion!! (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Good Morning y'all .... Hey Gail, we have talked before about a road trip, having a bunch of DG'ers meet in one central location - maybe we should make that location Taft, Texas!! LOL. I think you are getting very close to having your very own Botanical Gardens with all the plants you have. Before long you will have to change your user name to Plantladygail! I know you have a gazillion Gesneriads Miss Gessie, but you have lots of other plants too .... now Hoyas and Orchids are being added to your collection! Isn't it great living in zone 9 where we can grow stuff outside almost year round?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, wouldn't it be fun to meet and shop 'til we drop. San Antonio airport would be a good place for everyone to fly into. It is only 30 minutes in different directions to both Seguin and Boerne where these fabulous greenhouses are.

I just posted on the begonia forum.
Later i will post on tropicals, orchid, etc.........
I think the 'tired' is just setting today or i am just showing my real age.

PS....I forgot we have fabulous tropical nurseries where I live. Maybe you are right. We need to start out in Taft (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Sounds like a great "Spring" Break to me!!!

(Zone 1)

Oh ... and this is so true:

I adore your pic, Lin!!!!!

You all better plan a good spring trip to go plant shopping with me! I am being dead serious. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin.............travel over to the Orchid forum and see what I had to pass up at Hill Country African Violet nursery as I had no more room or money!

London, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

I thought this would be amusing..

Apparently, it is 8045 km from me to San Antonio (plus however extra to Taft!)
The quickest flight is 12 hours 10 mins.

He He!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You are so funny, hills!! You are right in your calculations! It is an 8 hour flight out of New York. I would have to drive 31/2 hours to Houston to get a non stop flight to London and then it would take 3 hours or more to fly to New York. (That is not counting all the sitting and standing that takes place at an airport these days)

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow Gail - what a great haul!! Congrats :)
I really love your variegated H. compacta - the "tail" of pink foliage is just adorable.

By the way - for Gail and those that seemed interested in the "cinnamon" hoya - the closest hoya name to that is H. cinnamomifolia, and it doesn't look like that. Looks to me like H. obscura - another great hoya.

Let me know when the next road trip to TX is!
Gabi

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gessie...just got back from a trip so I didn't see your wonderful haul. The plant that "blooms red" looks like H. imperialis var. Rauchii...hope you got it. The Cinnamon one is H. obscura....

What a terrific haul!!!!

Carol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You all are being so nice to me and I really appreciate the help. I am just buying hoyas where I find them and have no idea what they are so.....again a big thank you!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Now that I am home, Gabi and Carol, I just took pictures of the hanging baskets so you can help me identify the others. I really thank you. I am just going to post all of them although you have given me a couple of names.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

the blooms are two different colors completely

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think there is only one kind in this basket

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

question mark?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is the one you identified that blooms red

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

This is the one I called cinnamon and you gave me the botanical name.........but it looks like to me that maybe there are two kinds in this basket?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The one I wish I could identify is the one on the right side sitting on the ground (not in the cardboard boxes) next the 'cinnamon' looking one..............thanks so much..

Gail,

I'll give it a go:

Pic 1: H. obscura
Pic 2: looks like H. carnosa
Pic 3: looks like H. pubicalyx (with some H. carnosa 'Krinkle 8' leaves on the right of the plant)
Pic 4: not sure - maybe H. australis? It looks like there is some H. obscura in there.
Pic 5: H. imperialis
Pic 6: (same pic as the first) H. obscura - looks like only one plant is in there, but some leaves are more red than others, from the sun.
Pic 7: the reddish one next to the box on the left (i think that's the one you're talking about) looks like it could be H. tsangii (DS-70). In the box, I also see H. kerrii, H. kerrii var., H. carnosa 'Krimson Queen', H. obscura, H. imperialis.

Hope that helps - some are just guesses though.

Gabi

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

sounds great to me............and Carol thought so , too....thanks

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Nice score, Gail!!! I'm so jealous!!

Karen

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It's shame i have them as my heart is still mainly with all my african violets and their cousins, etc., but i do love hoyas

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Beautiful new Hoyas! I like the reddish leaved one! However I'm really jealous of the imperialis too- should have beautiful blooms

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

HI...the imperialis is var. Rauchii. The third one 'could' be a H. carnosa with some H. carnosa 'Krinkle 8' thrown in. #4 looks like H. australis...but also could be H. obovata...flowers will tell.

Nice healthy plants!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so excited to find these baskets as I stay so busy propagating the gesneriad family. You all are so nice to help me identify them.
