October blooms

Thanks Ann, I thought it was a very pretty effect too.

Well I don't have any flowers on it yet but finally after 3 years of growing hoya diversifolia, and checking it day in and day out for peduncles, guess what??? It has some!!!!!!!

Long Beach, CA

Same with my cembra and cv Iris Marie....after 3 years of nothing but leaves...I finally have some peduncles showing up. YEA!

great shot of the Sunrise flower, Christine.

Marcy I have both of those as well which I just received last year so I guess now that gives me something to look forward to in the next 2 years!!!(LOL)

I wonder why you can receive some hoyas as cuttings, they root and grow quickly and almost immediately begin forming peduncles and then others will take years? I've got an H. cv . minibelle which has been loaded with what must be over 100 peduncles now for at least 2 years and has not yet formed the first bud or bloomed.

At this point in the hoya growing game I have to admit that i'm in it a bit more for the foliage than for the flowers, not so in the beginning but it would be nice to occasionally see some flowers!!!!

My Minibell was a mature plant with peduncles when I bought it also, but didn't bloom until I moved it to a spot under the olive tree where it got a touch of late afternoon sun. It must be that it needs either really bright light, or a kiss of sun. Or...maybe it's just fickle like so many of them are and only will bloom when the stars align just right. Ha Ha.

I also grow them mostly just because I LOVE all the unique leaves with so much diversity in a single type of plant. I love collecting all the shapes, big ones, little ones, heart shaped ones, variegated ones, the ones with the dark veins, and leaves of maroon, speckles or splotches on them, the different ways they hang, twist, climb, and tangle themselves into our hearts. The flowers are just an added delight to keep us looking for them. It is almost like a game the hoyas play with us....(come here...look at me...see if you can find the flower I have hidden under my leaves for you..opps...fooled ya). Ha.
I certainly would keep all of my favs even if there were no blooms to be had from them ever.

Well said, Marcy!! Several people have asked why I have so many of the same kind of plant - think I'll just cut and paste your post above - it explains it all, for me!

Ok...here is that aquarium lined in mylar. I don't have anything in it yet but the egg crate and some moss I threw around. I usually put wet moss heather & fro around the plants. It is going to be totally lit by only the floresent light as it is behind my couch and no windows are near, so this is going to be a true experiment of how well they do with nothing but artificial lights.

This is not a hoya, but couldn't resist a picture of a nice big flower like this hibiscus 'Show Girl'.

All for now. My australis is blooming big time again now too, but didn't get a pic yet. Will soon.

Love your flowers Marcy, especially your "little" archboldiana flowers! Lovely hibiscus too, they're one of my favourite non-hoyas.

Marcy, your blooms are glorious!

I really like your mylar setup! Will you also be misting or running a humidifier in the converted aquarium? If so, how much impact will water droplets have on the reflectivity of the mylar? I am curious because where I want to put mine I also mist a couple of times a day and I am just wondering if, eventually, the residue from the misting will reduce the mylar's impact (oh, I hope that made sense).

Ann

Long Beach, CA

It DID make sense Ann. To tell the truth, I had not even thought about that. I know I will be misting, because that is how I keep myself from overwatering. I just mist away & then feel like I am doing something for them without actually drowning them. Ha. Well, I guess time will tell.
Does anyone else here know how water droplets affect mylar? I have never used the stuff before. It was fairly easy to cut and tape to the inside of the aquarium though.
Marcy

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Marcy, I wonder if you would have been better off if you taped the mylar to the outside of the aquarium - then when you mist, it would only get on the inside glass. You would be able to keep your mylar dry, but still have all of the reftlective benefits through the glass.

What a great idea (smacks head & utters doh!) I wish I had done it that way. Well, now that it is done, I think I will just wait & see how it does. If it gets all fogged up I still have a lot of the roll left. I can redo it later.

I'm so excited to get to post a bloom for this month. Only my second time ever! LOL

This is h verticillata and it was the beautiful floral smell in my living room this morning that led me to it!!

Thanks Maykela and Christine! The second umbel (somebody please correct me if I use the wrong words for things!!) is beginning to open up today!! And the other two are close! As you can see in the background of the picture we have a touch of snow on the ground so having fresh blooms in the house is awesome!! I can't really take credit for them except for the fact that I have excellent taste in vendors. LOL

Very pretty Christina, I so enjoy seeing the apple green color in the blooms!

I'm glad you like this Verticillata Gabi because you have a nice cutting from this exact plant now! LOL

Blooms have been few and far between for me this year for some reason. This is H. motoskei.

You can't really see from the pic but quite a few of the flowers are only 4 lobed as opposed to the normal 5 points.

I knew it Brenda!! I had a feeling it was from your plant after seeing your pics! Well, now I'm going to look forward to those gorgeous blooms..there are so many different colored blooms on verticillata, and I was hoping it was that color - YAY!

Gabi

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I'm glad Gabi!!! I was just really happy to see someone would want some of my cuttings! Well really they were Carol's cuttings but you know what I mean! LOL

dmichael that is a beautiful bloom!! I have a peduncle on my h motoskei and I sure hope it looks like yours if and when it ever blooms for me!! It will be huge compared to the others I've had!

~Brenda

Long Beach, CA

I love the looks of the H. motoskei plant more than many of the others. It may be a more common one, but it is still one of my favs.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

H. verticillata is one of my....perhaps my...favorite of hoyas!!!! There are many different leaf forms...and the flowers are .... well....devine!!! I clump H. verticillata along with H. acuta and H. parasitica...frankly...I can't tell (don't know) the differences...and their flowers are my favorite......the fragrances are so fresh and sweet and GENEROUS!

But now...H. magnifica and H. aff albiflora are about to bloom and I may change my mind....

Are we fickle or what?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I simply cannot believe these pics I am seeing. This new addiction of mine and absolutely no knowledge reminds of when I started with the gesneriads this past Janurary.

I am out of town.........on my way to Austin, I stopped in Seguin,Texas at a nursery and found 7 new kinds of hoyas..........got 3 4" pots of each for ony 3.35 each. The people there didn't know what they were and I didn't care........I just knew they didn't look like any that I have gotten so far.

My son's computer won't take my memory card, but when I get back home I will be uploading pics just to see if you all know what they might be by their distinctive foliage different from what I have..................this is going to be so much fun..........

Brenda, that is so pretty up against the window looking at snow.
One i bought that I didn't have is a common one but she had such strong fragrance in bloom.............it is the one which starts with an L............Lin has it...........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

All four blooms are open this morning and I knew it the minute I opened my bedroom door!! So GENEROUS is the right description! LOL I'm so glad it is a beautiful scent. I'm going to have to make plans for a time when maybe one blooms that's not so nice :0)

I will be checking out H acuta and H parasitica as I really like this plant, it is beautiful in leaf form and feel and thickness!

Well Gail this will be the place to get your new hoyas ID'd, sounds like your going to have really big full baskets!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Since no one at the nursery had a clue as to what I got, I will have to beg for a little help with ID right here when I get home!!!!!!!

One I got smells so good I have it in my son's apartment.........big white yellow bloom on it........

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Thanks Ann!! Since my first hoya bloom was aff finlaysonii and that bloom only lasted about 36 hours I'm thrilled to have already gotten several days of enjoyment from these blooms!!!

Gail no fair, you just walk right into a nursery in TX and buy a blooming hoya!! Can't wait to see your pictures!

~Brenda

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I'm in TX and the only one I've ever seen for sale blooming is bella! And it's because I order them! I work in a greenhouse nursery. Just can't find them available any where! But there is just not much around here to choose from when it comes to plant shopping!
