October blooms

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Ooooo Ann, I really love that!! The color of those flowers is really rich. I am positively jealous...Are you just having non-stop blooms in your super sunny Cali? It looks like you have another cluster just waiting to open right behind.

BTW, Carol just reminded me that what I have been calling H. tomataensis is actually H. sp. Sulawesi. Thanks Carol!!!!

Yes, Sara. Those buds opened this morning - I can't wait for tonight to smell both umbels.

I'm so excited! I am bringing all my plants in for the winter and found my first bloom on my Hoya obovata! It was hiding behind a trellis so I hadn't seen it. The bloom was older and some of them had fallen off so I almost missed it! It wasn't the color I was expecting though....But who cares! It bloomed!

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Ann, when I traded with dmichael back in August, he sent me two hoyas that he felt were a bit confused in the sulawesi / tomataensis debate. I believe he contacted David Liddle, and sent pictures of the two that he had. I don't know that I did a super job of following his explanation, but what I got he labeled H. sulawesi (GPS 8865), and H. tomataensis IML 1384, GPS 8860. They are very similar in appearance (leaf wise, and yes I know that is no way to id hoyas) sigh...

I don't know if your sulawesi / tomataensis came with an IML #, but perhaps that would help clear up some confusion? If David is around, perhaps he could clear things up?

I must say, I really appreciate how diligent Carol is in keeping the id's of her hoyas consistent!! I know that larger sellers like logees, asiatica and others would not take the time, nor make the effort to get corrected id's to their purchasers!!

Diane, congratulations on your obovata blooms!! Do you have a picture of them? You said that they weren't the color that you were expecting, what color were they?

The obovata blooms were off-white- maybe it could be called pearl-ish? with maroon centers. From what I'd read I thought they should be buff or brown-ish. If I can figure out how to get pics from my new dig. camera to my email , I'd post a pic??!! Haven't figured that thing out yet!

I think I figured it out! Here is(i hope) my Hoya obovata bloom

Diane I'm so glad you didn't miss that bloom, it would have been a pity for that pretty thing to have gone unnoticed!

Thanks Brenda!! Too bad it only lasts about 48 hours for me. Oh, well ... it's pretty and has a nice fragrance.

Diane, beautiful bloom! Congratulations!

Congrats to both of you! Beautiful blooms. Now, if only I can get my obovata to bloom - the foliage has been growing like a weed, but no sign of peduncles yet!

Beautiful blooms Christina! I recently got H. pauciflora and was curious about what the single blooms would look like. Very cool! I'd love to also see it when it opens if you get a chance to post it!

Gail did you ever get back from your sons?

Jeri

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi, Jeri.................just got back this afternoon..............trying to stay awake until 9:00.................ended up going to see my daughter and her family, too...........

Got up early this morning and headed back into our first bad norther.........below 50 degrees (laughing for people who really live in cold weather)..........but the winds exceeded 50mph, too. Every pot outside had blown over.............

Sometime this week.........I can't wait to show you all my hoyas..........found a nursery in Seguin, Texas on the way up and filled my car with 4" pots of rooted cuttings for 3.35 each..........I have no earthly idea what I have, but it sounds exciting...........

The plants got unloaded but the unimportant things like luggage are still in the car........

I just love to hop over to hoyas trying to learn a little and see a lot of great pictures!!!!!!!! I am determined to learn and grow them............

San Francisco, CA

Christina, that is a marvelous picture of H. lacunosa. I've photographed that one often, but have always had a hard time with the glare from the white corollas "whiting out" the details of the corona. You seem to have gotten the lighting perfect. How did you do it?

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Wow! That wallichii bloom really intrigues me!

Trelleborg, Sweden

Thanks everyone!

Mark: When I do close-ups I try not to use the macro mode... Instead I zoom in (manual mode) and use the flash and white balance for flash, if that makes any sense...? It works wonders for me when taking photos of white flowers.

I'll post a photo of the pauciflora as soon as it opens.

this is hoya patella. Seems to only bloom one flower per peduncle,I havent had it long enough to be all that familiar with it's blooming habits but it has never bloomed more that one flower at a time per peduncle. This one is just starting to pop!

On the 18th I posted a picture of my H. motoskei umbel that actually opened on the 17th. This is a picture taken today, exactly a week later of the very same umbel of flowers and they are just as firm fresh as they were on day one

This is H. nummularioides. This plant is absolutely covered from top to bottom with open clusters of flowers. There must be a hundred or more open peduncles which have the entire gh perfumed. You can smell it as soon as you walk through the gh door.

I enjoy the monthly flower shows as well gessie but all they do is introduce me to new varieties of hoyas that I MUST buy to add to my ever growing collection!!!

That odetteae that Christina posted earlier is now on my wish list!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I hope it is on your want list..............my want list is longer than my have list (LOL)

Oh my...that paucifloria flower makes me want to curl up in it & go to sleep. Looks soooo soft. How do you ever get such great close ups Christina? Do you have a great 'macro' lens?

This plant just loaded itself up with buds again... I have MASSES! It's amazing! Just keeps on giving...

Hoya Retusa, obviously loving every bit of sun that manages to make it through the window...

Which window do you have that one in Hills? How long does the sun shine on it? That is just lovely. Here I thought that one must be a hard one to get to bloom and look at yours go.
It is going on my wish list for spring orders.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Beautiful H. retusa Hills!! I can't wait until mine gets to be that size. I ordered mine from the David Liddle Fall Cutting Order. The cutting came in very yellow, but rooted amazingly fast, and it is now is turning a nice dark green color. I also have to say that the D. Liddle cutting was large enough to start two pots worth for those contemplating ordering it from him.

A shot to show how big the flowers of pauciflora is compared to the leaves. Even though I have a really bad cold I can still enjoy the fragrance. It's like sweet, but yet fresh perfume...
