I had these on my mind today so I made a collage then decided to share. Everyone have a great day! Karen
Morning Glories 2007 #28
Gourd, I hope you have the kind of shopping trip that relaxes you and cures the headache. :)
Karen
Those dbls are gorgeous Karen.
A, sorry you still have the horrible headache.
Nice photos there, very drool producing eye candy...
Yeah, going to get dressed and go to the pharmacy..lol.. that SHOULD make me feel better, and If I happen to see OTHER things, well, that would be nice too..
DH is getting of work early to go to Sams and I tag along cuz, you never know when these guys get in their blubs in (like I need to plant more???)
Anybody else putting blubs?? I got 7 GIANT Squill into the ground, a couple weigh about 10lbs each!! They are neat bulbs..
Will take a photo when I get the camera in gear..
TTYL.
A.
Beth and Karen - Love your gorgeous blooms! So pretty they just make me smile! :-)
A- I hope the headache goes away. I get sinus headaches all the time living here in FL. Makes my whole body hurt. Sending ~~~~Begone Headache Vibes ~~~~ to you!
Emma - I finally got a photo of a side view of the mystery feathered blooms I have. It's definitely pink with white throats.
Nice double blooms. I didn't grow any double blooms this year for some reason, except Gypsy Bride and Sunrise Serenade which are really shredded blooms.
Beth nice 'Wedding Bells' I couldn't get any of mine to germinate 0:(
Karen this one is unbelievable!! I love it!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4027778
Becky, can you save me some MF seeds? I'd like to try them again next year. The first time I grew them I was totally inexperienced. I'd like to plant them with some Pearly Gates and Scarlett O'Hara.
Becky,
That is a nice one, they say it is fragrant... be sure to take a sniff.. I love those lizards too..
A.
Becky, nice feathered. Love the moonflowers too.
Ronnie, Thanks...now will it come back from seeds? Will it even make seeds? Yep, I got a pod on the vine and time will tell!!!
Moonflowers surprise you when you first see them. They are like beacons shining in the darkness. They are so pretty!
beckygardener, Your hige is very pretty as she is. Pictures can be such a pain because the colors refuse to be right sometimes no matter when and how you go take the picture. I can give you some information that could be helpful.
Sunrise Serenade is a big expansive vine like Gypsy Bride to compare sizes. They have big leaves, thick stems and really big full flowers and mostly double shredded flowers. They are very dark pink with red "eyes" in the petals. I suppose with breeding these types of vines could come in other colors and have different names according to the color like the others.
I notice a smaller type of hige has a smaller flower 1-2 inch, smaller vine(me like that) that doesn`t cover quite as much trellis and has delicate thin stems. The flowers are seen in almost single, split semi double, fully shredded round pom pom ball flowers (we all like) forms. These can all appear on a single vine.
I`m not positive about this or stating this as a indisputable fact but it looks to me like the weather seems to influence the flowers on these smaller higes. Hot weather brings more almost single but curly and split blooms while cooler weather brings out more double shredded pom pom ball flowers. The smaller flower higes make up for the 2 inch blooms with profusion.
The pink hige I have is about a medium grower. It is a long vine but the leaves and stems cannot match the size on the Sunrise Serenade or Gypsy Bride. I`m seeing this with my own eyes because I have them all growing in my yard right now. It makes up for smaller blooms by getting covered with blooms and they love cooler weather 70-80.
In this picture you can see how lovely and delicate the higes can be. They can be huge like SS or GB,medium size and smaller and delicate. This smaller one MGJapan sent is a forever keeper for me!

Judith - I will save you some Moonflower seeds! I am growing mine with Cardinal Climber. One blooms profusely during the day and the other at night! Looks really pretty with the white and red blooms! Right at sunset! ;-)
A - Oh yes!!! Those Moonflowers smell wonderful! Between them and my 4 O'Clocks all out there together, I love to head outside right at sundown. It smells like a perfume factory out there! Love it, love it! I am all about growing plants that have a fragrance. That's quickly becoming my newest interest! :-)
Thanks, Jackie!
Karen - My Pink Feathered unknown has thin stems, small sparse heart shaped leaves, and probably the blooms are small too compared to the Sunrise Serenade and other larger higes.
But .... the only thing that might have been planted in that spot was Sunrise Serenade. (Though the marker was destroyed by the rodents, too. So I do not know.) This vine is growing in less than optimum conditions. Could a neglected known cultivar produce a weaker vine and blooms?
I am currently growing out Sunrise Serenade in a container. It is just about ready to start blooming. I will compare it with the pink unknown. But looking at the leaves and stems, there is a huge different already between the two! SS is huge! The Pink Unknown is small and puny, but still blooms everyday in clusters. And it is still climbing all over the White Hyacinth Bean vine. It may look puny, but it doesn't seem to be slowing down yet with growth.
Also .... I have not seen any seed pods forming on the pink hige. Are the higes stingy when it comes to seed production?

Check the flowers and see if they have complete parts and pollen. You might need to hand pollinate and mark some flowers if you want to make sure you get seeds from these hige type vines.
Growing conditions can affect purpureas. They like poor soil and are not fussy flowers. I don`t feed purpureas unless they look like they need it and then usually one feed is plenty to get them going. If you had them in a small pot or they were in dry clay it might hold back the size of the vine...which is a good idea imho if you have limited space to grow things. Not enough sun isn`t good for them either and will cause them to be puny and cause infrequent or no bloms. Karen

Becky, thanks! Sounds like great minds run in the same channel. Pearly Gates for me would be white during the day and night and Scarlett O'Hara during the day with Pearly Gates. Great colors!
Karen- You state
"They like poor soil "
Define 'poor' soil...and clarify how it is that they 'like' it...
I shared on my experience in the thread here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/684152/
TTY,...
Ron
The term poor soil is relative. I have a spot that is predominantly dry clay with maybe a bit of organic matter which would be very poor soil for roses but the purpureas are flourishing with no help. I will not feed those because they obviously don`t need it and it would be wasting money. I did need to feed the nils growing three feet away from the purpureas because they sat there doing nothing until I added a bit of good homemade compost and fed them.
If your purpureas are not growing then you should feed them and the same goes for nils. I only feed if they need it. I have already learned the rich loam is good for nils and I feed additional plant food if they need it. The purpureas I have grown are "easy keepers" meaning I haven`t needed to intervene with special care like soil ammending and feeding as often as the nils.
That is just my experience. If yours is different then that is ok. You can tell if a flower "likes" your location, soil and the care you are giving by the way it grows and blooms. If you remember generally what worked for you in your garden then you can repeat that. It is trial and error.

Thank you Karen, Joseph and Antoinette re my Triple Jamie Lynn Hige.
Won't it be too awesome if that one remains True. Wow!
Beth . . .
I crossed my Solid Purple Flaked Hige last year with a few different I. purpureas.
Actually I crossed a LOT of my Higes.
Solid Purple Flaked x Jamie Lynn and
Solid Purple Flaked x Regular Purple-Flaked Shibori
Of the many that I did cross some of the pods ended up with the Regular seed mix of my Solid Purple Flaked Higes and my Red Higes that I also did a lot of crossing with. One has already showed up that someone else has grown and no telling how many others that just grow MGs for the fun of it that we may or may not ever know about.
Jerry collected most of my Hige seeds last year [scream]. . .
but now he knows to be careful with my marked pods. I always mark my crosses with masking tape because I know the tape won't go anywhere except to the ground if the cross doesn't take - but mainly because I did so many.
I didn't grow them all out this year to see what I ended up with.
This year is another story. I have crossed SO MANY I. purpureas x Higes that I don't know where in the world I will grow them all out next year, so guess I'll have to scatter them throughout Jacksonville. I do have quite a bit of property I can use at the church, plus a few other places as well, and the way those vines grow they need plenty of room.
This year I crossed my 'New Color' Purple-Flaked Shibori with a lot of different Higes.
I crossed very few back to the Higes and need to do more of that now that they are in full bloom. Ron suggested I cross my Regular Jamie Lynn back to the Jamie Lynn Hige.
I have also done quite a bid of crossing with Sunrise Serenade and Split Personality. I did a lot of Hige crossing to the Split Personality Blooms and still want to do a few more.
I am also growing a Dark Purple Hige this year and need to play around with that one a bit too. I thought I might end up with some neat blooms crossing to the Split Personality since it is already a split MG.
I'll have one great selection next year or a huge mess *-*
But, they will be fun to grow out.
Beth, I love your Wedding Bells in the Rain . . .
So much that I'd like to share a couple that I got in the Rain last year.
Emma
Emma, Wow, those are not only knock out Wedding Bells but also perfect pictures! They look like you could reach in and touch them through the screen !!!

Wow!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4027761
I hope I can get to my tagged pods in my Purpurea Tangled Mess.
The vine that I tried to root didn't work [Sorry Ron], and I haven't been back out there to see if the vine is even still alive, which is why I will at least hope to get a few of the pods for next year.
I would LOVE some of your seeds if you get enough.
We should keep this beauty going for sure!
I have rooted several MG cuttings, but never sucessfully got them to live until this year. I had a vine break on a Purple-Flaked Shibori and rooted nicely, even continued to grow when I planted it. This week it finally broke out in full bloom. I'm really proud of that one too.
I have heard Ron suggest this many times but don't remember seeing any reports of anyone that was successful. Now, I know a Rooted MG Cutting will grow and produce very nicely!

Emma
I haven't read Ron's information yet on poor soil,
but my experience is that my purpureas that I grow every year in my alley are pretty much left neglected. They bloom great in the beginning but right now they are not blooming at all and I am only collecting the seeds. Plus they usually get eat up with bugs because I usually don't take care of them as I do my others.
My others that I grow closer to my house like my Jamie Lynns are blooming like crazy right now. I mean REALLY BLOOMING
Another purp. [Pink Rambler ???] is also going like nuts with blooms. Both of these areas have had the soil amended, and the only feeding they got was when I first planted them.
Here is photo from this morning of Jamie Lynn with a couple of Solid Purple-Flaked Shibori Blooms that look Blue - but they are a Light Purple.

Emma, Sure you can have seeds from this vine. It rooted amazingly easily. It will make gathering easier. Karen
Thanks Karen,
Emma
Emma - I love your Jamie Lynn MGs! I would love to get a couple seeds of that one! LOVE THE COLOR!!! And the Sulphur Butterfly ..... icing on the cake! I have never seen any butterflies on any of my MGs! How cool! Just one more reason to grow them!!! :-) Thanks for the butterfly photos!!!! :-) :-) :-)
Emma, That vine I rooted is already getting buds on it! I`ll take a picture when it blooms to confirm I have the right one.
I decided to tag this collage at the end here to go with some of the others I posted. This watercolor blue looking vine has the most interesting looking leaves. Some are single, double, wavy and some are shredded. Karen

Thanks Becky. . .
just add that one to your want list for me.
I thought you might enjoy those Butterflies on the MGs since you asked if they liked MGs.
Karen . . .
Neat that your vine is taking off so fast. Did you root it in water then plant it?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4033994
Emma
I stuck it in a pot of dirt and it started growing. It has buds and I`ll take a picture later when it blooms. Karen
Karen -
That is great information to know. Thanks!
Emma
