Your card arrived in yesterdays mail Jan, I have it propped here on my desk! I just have to say again that Brennan's really outdid themselves picking out the streps, beautiful!
~Brenda
Any health news from jannich and about her!!!!!!!! part 2
That is truly one of the prettiest streps I have ever seen................Jan.............I will add the best fertilizer to use.........................to your package on Monday............
Brenda............I have everything i grow under the big double lights..........are you feeding them enough...............they are growing plants...............I burned mine from too much fertilizer.........I am sticking with either Schultz 20-20-20, Eleanor's V11 or Seaweed food on my little streps from now on...........................they are so darn sensitive to heavy fertilizer.........When the streps get big enough to bloom I sock that 12-36-12 stuff to them............
wow.....................great looking plant and equally great pics.......................love that bloom
My fertilizer came today Gail!! Thanks so much! I can't wait to try it out on my semi mini AV's.... they need a kick in the pants! :)) As do my Kholerias... and I'm sure my streps will appreciate the treat too!
I received the seaweed fertilizer from The Violet Showcase a few days ago .... so I'll use it on the baby streps and see if that picks them up. I was trying to wean them from underneath their dome but I've slapped that back on until they look a bit better.
Beautiful collage with the Columnea Jan...when I get the babies perked up and you are perked up too... LOL... we'll work something out...do you have any of those little Sinns left, I've heard a lot of good things about your growing of them!!
~Brenda
Brenda..................I meant to tell you that someone told me to use that seaweed fertilizer as a foliar spray............it works great..............I just have a spray bottle with 32 or 34 oz. in it........I just guess and use a little less than an ounce to the bottle and spray everything in sight after I have done all my stuck leaves and babies...............
Another excellent tip to try!! These babies will be looking good in no time now!

update on jannich:
Got an email today from jannich.............
She drove 100 miles to see her lung doctor. The infection is not going away at all, so she has been put on stronger antibiotics and steroids, too. I told her that when I feel poorly I always beg the doc for steroids (LOL)
She says to tell you how much she misses being active on DG...............I think she goes back to the city in another 2 weeks to see the lung doc again for a new report.
Gosh Gail! That is another stunning strep! Do you know the name of that one?
Thanks for keeping us posted on Jan.
Jan... we are continuing to keep you in our prayers!
Sending bunches of get well wishes your way!!!
Karen
Boo Hoo...........she is leaving with all my streps that i sold in the classified...........so today I swiped a leaf from every strep................she is 'Hera'........isn't she just too nice...........
I am going to the av sale in Austin the 20th.........and hope to replace all new streps or at least leaves...........plus I will have at least one of each of my old steps..........
Every strep had at least one long long leaf...........too long to even ship........so that is the leaf i took from each one........and then made wedges and planted...........so I should have lots of the original streps.................
'Hera' is certainly lovely!
My goal is to eventually grow nothing but Streps...........these aren't going to be easy to ship because they are too big.............but it would be fun to have a lot of varieties ............then shipping wouldn't be costly at all................and it is hard to find lots of cultivars........i like some of the Bristol series..........but there are many more I like better.............
Wow! You mean you want to get away from all the other gessies, and just grow streps?
I commend you if that's what you want to do...
but, I think you grow so many things so well!
It's hard to imagine you NOT growing your beatiful AVs, and others...
I am already laughing even thinking about giving up the other gessies.............whatever was I thinking............don't you do that sometimes...........get really high on something you love........then a few months later, you are off on another tangent????????????
I am even falling in love with the plants on my front porch..........it was too hot during the summer to enjoy some of them...........but now that I have discovered the codanthes, columneas, lipstick plants, hoyas, etc..............they don't seem to mind the heat..................I am even falling in love with orchids now........I only have two but now I just want more.........they are still as pretty as the day i got them.................
will go outside tomorrow and show a picture of them...........Rain has found some really pretty ones in pots...............I don't even know the names of them......or the kinds........only know that I have Vandas..........
Thank you for the update on Jan, Gail. I'm still so worried about her, and sure hope the new meds clear up that infection. I wish I was closer so I could go visit her and help her with whatever she needs done...
'Hera' is beautiful! Next time you're ready to have a big sale, give me a couple weeks notice so I can save up, or put something on eBay to sell, or something! LOL I sure do love Streps! They're so easy to grow and just full of flowers most of the time.
Watch yourself with those Orchids. I'm finding that I'm obsessed! LOL The Paph is opening its bloom, but good grief that is the most painfully slow process I've ever seen! I've been begging it for the last three days to please hurry up! LOL Here it is Friday, when I first noticed it was starting to open.
Rain........................we have been lonely on DG.............everyone seems to be gone........so glad you posted that beauty..............
I went to the local nursery today to get some 4" hoyas for a beginner (like me)..............and she tried to tell me that the Vandas wouldn't grow here because it is too hot...........it is not stopping me one bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just wash 'em down everyday........sometimes two times a day.................
I am a bit worried about this orchid thing............ seeing yours and others is causing some unrest here on the homefront (LOL)
Don't ever worry about the streps...........i am in love with them........have so many wedges growing now................and intend to keep adding to the collection............just because these are going out doesn't mean there won't be plenty more..............
Look what is blooming again behind this leaf...........Midas.........i never give away any strep that someone has either given me a leaf from or the mother plant..........
I am not ever shipping streps this big though............have been trimming leaves all day........to make the pots more compact.............let me go measure one leaf and tell you it has to come off before mailing........makes the postage too high for the buyer..........going next time to send them out when they are smaller............
I am on pins and needles waiting for the Austin and kerrville shows.....................one would think I was never going to get my hands on another strep..................will start propagating the ones I find with fury when i get home with them..................
Here I am,hee,hee.
Hi Amy! Sorry I haven't d-mailed you.I do think I'm finally on the road to recovery, so don't worry lol..The new medicine has made a big difference in just a few days.Look the orchids! Oh no another addiction!
Hi there Gail,You are NOT giving gessies up. No.NO.I won't let ya.LOL.
Hi Jan!! Don't worry about not dmailing me! Just get to feeling better! As long as I know you're okay, that's the main thing. :o) I do enjoy hearing from you, but Gail always spreads the word when she hears from you. I am soooooo glad you're feeling better! You sure gave us a scare, lady! I hope you feel better and better every day! Big hugs to you! :o)
Gail, that's a huge Strep leaf! LOL The white seedling of mine has huge leaves, too, but I'm trying not to have to trim them back. ;o) And 'Midas' is so cute blooming back there. :o) Sure am glad you're not getting out of Streps!
I spent a big part of today playing with Hoyas. Some cuttings I recently got have rooted up just beautifully, and I'm so excited to know that I can root them that well. Now there's no reason to stop me from getting MORE!! LOL Look at these roots! I love these clear pots. :o)
That Orchid is lovely, Lin! What is it?
I've had Episcia 'Strawberry Patch' shoved to the back of my stand. I had stuck a small struggling plant in this clear container several months back and closed the lid. Along and along, I stuck another plant of one type or another in there and shut the lid again. The Episcia eventually pushed the lid open, but still I left it shoved to the back. It was turned so that I couldn't see how big it had gotten and how it had spilled over the side of the container. I am shocked!! I put the Sharpie marker on the table to give you an idea of how huge this thing has gotten. See what pure neglect can do?? LOL
Wow Amy! That E. 'Strawberry Patch' is huge! I can't wait to have mine grow and bloom for me! It is always exciting to get that first bloom!
Oh, the Orchid in my post above is Oncidium Intergeneric/Alliance Onc. Gower Ramsey (whatever that means!) LOL.
I bought it about 4 years ago when I was down in South Florida taking care of my Mom. I was at a Wal-Mart with my sister and when I saw it blooming I just couldn't resist the yellow flowers. I have about 15 orchids. I love buying plants on Wal-Mart's clearance table to see if I can revive them ... they sometimes have orchids on clearance and I will pick one up. I want to get another Vanda - I had one years ago that looked exactly like those beauties Gail posted photo's of, but it must have died on me cause It's not out in my jungle anymore.
Hi there Lin! Thats a beautiful orchid. Is that the one they call the dancing lady orchid? I forgot to send you the tea info. They have a web site www.yogitea.com
Hi Amy! Holy smokes Strawberry patch is beautiful and huge.Love it.
I gotta tell you ladies I pretty bored sitting around the house.I was washing out some plastic containers( appplesauce and a yogurt cup) and they fell together.Perfect fit for a self watering pot! So heres my homemade pot.Now if I was a good painter.lol
I know alot of us grow Hoyas.Anybody want to try seeds from one of mine.I have to look up the name of it.I planted some 9-29 and I'm seeing some green already.
That is simply amazing, Jannich......................9-29 and it looks like that.............maybe I will change my mind about the seed................can't get over how big she is!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never thought of trying Hoya from seed! How amazing that you would have green showing already from seed you just planted on 9/29 .... not even two full weeks! Does Hoya seed stay viable for a good length of time or do you know? I think I read something one time about one of the Hoya's seeds not staying fresh for long but I don't remember which one it was.
That's a beautiful pot, Jan! I think you did a great job painting it! :o) I'd love to try some of your Hoya seeds. You know me...I just can't resist seeds. LOL
Rain....................I have no luck with episicas....................you just watch me put those plants in a zip lock............................it can't be soon enough for me..............that is so pretty...........
LOL Gail, this was sheer luck. It was just about dead, and I put it in one of those cinnamon roll containers from Walmart and closed the lid. Whenever I break a leaf or stolon, or something needs extra humidity, I just stick it wherever there's room. What you can't see in that container is a begonia baby from leaf, a Chirita baby, and a Neon pothos. LOL Strawberry Patch just completely took over the entire container. There are a couple of stolons that rooted and have become large plants, so really that's two or three plants, but I think the stolons are still attached to the mom plant. LOL
I only have a few left...........I even tried to take some small cuttings and stolons in a terrarium and killed them too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may have to give up on episcias......................but will try the baggie method before I give up completely................
Gail: I was sooo ready to give up on the Episcia's until I tried what someone on this forum said to do (don't remember who gave this tip but a HUGE THANK YOU to whoever you are!) - I put them either in plastic or glass containers with lots of the moist LFS and under the lights. They are going crazy .... new, hairy roots shooting out everywhere. I am so thankful to whoever posted that tip. I haven't had an episcia bloom yet but at least they aren't dying on me anymore and I'm hoping to see some in flower before too long!
Lin..............in other words you don't even have any soil=less mix except for the rootball......just like we do streps but put a dome on the episcias...............or?????????? are you growing just in the LFS
Gosh.............this is really a learning night for me...............I can see a little soil on the bottom.........thanks so much for this tip.................they look awesome...............
Oh, sorry .... the photo of the two above were planted in soil and I put the moist LFS around the base on top of the soil. These are doing good but the ones doing best seem to be the ones in glass jars with nothing but LFS! I am attributing the growth and rooting to the humid conditions of the containers but I think I see a difference in the ones in straight spagh and the others that are in soil.
Here's E. 'Chocolate Velour' that I just recently planted in straight Spagh:
I may just try that....I have a Pink Dreams that isn't happy anywhere I put it, even in the terrarium....maybe the Sphagnum will do the trick.....
Ok...................straight LFS it will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rain- I wish neglect would cause something beautiful like that for MY plants!! It looks awesome!
Ladylin- what's the episcia on the left in that first pic?
Cj: That one Strawberry Patch, but could very well be mis-labeled.
Jannich,so happy to hear you are beginning to feel better.Hope you continue on your way for a full recovery quickly. We sure do miss you around here : )
Lin,Your episcias look so nice..Looks like I am going to have to try that spaghum moss method.
Amy that Strawberry Patch is enormous. So pretty.
Gail I just can't imagine you giving up everything else just to grow streps..you are such a great grower..seems everything you propagate you are great at!
