North Texas RoundUp - Trade page 3
pbtxlady, I would love some coneflowers and rose cuttings.
Anyone who wants to share rose cuttings with me I am going to give rooting them a big tx try after Melvas class on how to root them.
I am really wanting Don Juan climbing rose and Tropicana rose. I love all roses and have lots of room, so I won't turn any down. So far to date, I haven't successfully rooted a single rose. I tried twice so far to no avail.
Oh, forgot to mention. Some of you have talked about althea (rose of Sharon). Well, see, I have this hybrid that has beautiful flowers, but didn't grow as fast as I wanted it to. So I chopped it down four years ago. Now, of course, I can't get rid of it. It's bright white with a deep burgundy eye. The runners are about to bloom. If anyone wants a cutting, let me know. Otherwise they're going in the compost.
I also have a 15-year-old white one. It was a volunteer from the one I just described, but it's completely white--no eye. But it grew a lot faster than its "parent" and is a very nice, hardy umbrella for my shade garden. This one is a magnet for bumblebees and night moths.
Charlene, I'm going to be sitting in with you at the Melva School of Rose Propagation 101. :) I'll bring you a selection from my dad's best plants. If we're not successful, then we'll just try again until we get it done.
I don't have Don Juans. Wish I did! That bright red is just so beautiful.
If you can't find Don Juans, I do have some Blazes that I can cut. LOLOL--I would've mentioned them sooner, but truthfully, I didn't think about anyone wanting them! They're more of a burgundy color than the DJs, but they grow like wild. Mine are mostly in shade now, and I pretty much ignore them--no spray or fertilizer. They get water when I water the yard, and otherwise they get by on their own. Two actually have a fence planted right on their crowns (thank you so much, bad fence contractor). Every year I say I'm going to cut them down. But then they bloom and I change my mind. Light fragrance.
Got you down for the coneflowers and scabiosa.
You and I will get the rose rooting down. We will just swap roses with everyone until we have all that we have room for LOL.
Blaze would be nice it is pretty too and as I said I have lots of room here to cover.
Thank you, so much.
Charlene
Hello everybody!
I updated my trade list you'll find it here>
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3838500
Please dmail me, :-)
Charlene, Do you still have an American Willow? .. or is it taken?
debnes
I would like to enroll in Rose Propagation 101 @ the Melva School, PLEASE.
I rescued MANY roses last summer. Some have survived & some have not. Rescue for some was only to be digested by roaming creatures that cross my property on their way to the lake below.
This wkend, I relocated the survivors to a new to-be bed with 5' chicken wire to protect them. Some are in qts & some are in gallons.
Anyone ever hear of a rose called 'Outa da Blue'?
debnes..............i would like blue crown passi and the purple. also as many a. incarnatas as don't get taken by others. i will look to see if i have anything that you can use. how about a loquat tree? or blackberry lilies? i have got to do a trade list. but today have a sick kid home. write more later.
debnes........................i have plenty of canna to bring............red and yellow.
denes_dfw-tx: yes I have Am willow. I also have canna lilies, some of mine are the kind with the beautiful burgandy striped foilage and the flowers are not the main focal point. I have some with red flowers also.
I would love some blue crown passion flower. Two if possible. Which purple passion flower do you have? I have some incarnata passion flower to trade.
I would also like one of the Asclepias incarnata (Cinderella)
Deb, Could I have some Huisache Daisy seed, some Cassia alata, and a Duranta cutting if you have enough, Please.
Let me know what you need from my list.
Josephine.
I have lantanas to add to my list. I dug them today already rooted. I trimmed 'em back and potted 'em up. I have four but I can get all you want as they grow wild here. They are mostly the ham and egg type, but since they are op some are all yellow or all pink. They grow in bunches, so I can't pick which ones are which, but I think the solid ones just appear on the bushes that bear the pink and yellow.
Also I have some Mexican heather potted up if anyone needs a start of that.
Also the spiderwort with the bluish purple flower grows wild here if anyone needs that.
Deb, I have plain duranta erecta without the white trim. Could we trade one for the other so we will each have both?
Charlene, may I have some of your amazing Spiderwort? Let me knoe what you need from me.
Josephine.
Charlene spider wart please
Charlene, I'd like to have a couple of your lantanas, any color. Thanks!
Gotcha all three of you.
Still hoping and searching for two rose bushes. Tropicana and Don Juan climber.
Thank you Charlene, I hope we don't drive you crazy with all the requests.
Josephine.
Hey, Charlene, do you want me to look at the nursery where we got my dad's Tropicana? It's very close to my house. We got it last year, but he might still have some.
How far away is Buffalo, anyway? If you're close to this area, you'd probably go crazy looking at all his roses.
Thanks pbtxlady, but I have someone looking this weekend at a nursery. I'll give a holler if they don't have success. The roses are on sale for $3.00 in gallon pots. What a deal.
Garland is a bit far. I live just off 45 half way between Houston and Dallas.
I wish I were closer or that gas was cheaper. I'd love to see your dad's roses.
Josephine, I am not going crazy in a bad way, but I am going crazy with enjoying this trading.
Charlene
Debnes.....Please put me down for your Duranta erecta.
Sure Sheila I will save you some Duranta.
Sure Charlene, let's trade the two. :-) Yes i will take a canna or 2 from you also. I will have a nice mix of them from several friends here, (yes I am a sentimental fool... I remember who gave me what, lol).
debnes
Well, Charlene, if you are ever up this way, the name of the nursery is Monday's. It's just down Broadway from I-30. He has the best roses I've seen around here. Big selection.
If you don't find one, let me know and I'll be glad to stop by there. I drive past it every day.
pbtxlady.............this monday's...........it's on broadway? if i am on I-30 and i exit beltline what do i do then? doesn't beltline become broadway?
Barb,,,,,,,,,,,,,, don't you have enough yet?
Your sister unleashed a plantaholic & didn't even know it!!! lol
Bad Linda,,,,,,,, no biskit!!! lol
Can't wait to see ya'll again!!!
well there are a few roses that i NEED. i am looking for one that is very bright..........like rosie odonnell or betty boop. also, would like to find some that are yellow/orange/pink combos. and it just never hurts to look. lol.
Yes, Broadway is Beltline. If you're coming from Fate, you'd exit and go right. Pass Rowlett Rd, and then pass Oates. Monday's is on the right, just before you reach the Wynn Joyce/LaPrada intersection.
Can't say it's the friendliest place I've ever been. Also, I don't shop there much in the fall, so don't know what kind of selection he has. Normally, though, he has beautiful plants. http://davesgarden.com/products/go/view/967/
Hey, Josephine--loved your article. Do you have any packets of elephant garlic left?
well i have to go. you never know what end of the year sales they might be having. although july is the time to buy around here......usually anyway. when no one has enough water.
Mamajack, are you interested in cuttings? Those orange/peach/red.apricot combos are the ones that my dad just can't live without. Do you want me to see what he has?
Also, all those same colors are what Joseph's Coat does, if you're interested in a climber. Multiple colors all at the same time.
Yeah, and you know, in the last 3-4 years I've relandscaped most of my lot for shade, and I'd say that about half of my stuff came from there. (It's way too convenient for my checkbook, LOL.) I just really don't know what he has now. I don't think he reduces prices a lot in the fall, and I tend to shop at places that do. But in the spring, I spend a small fortune at Monday's. Very exotic begonias and ferns and other gorgeous things inside--a lot of Monrovia plants, and things that I don't see elsewhere. I don't know much about roses, but my dad says they are the best around here.
The only problem is, he's a brusque person, and a little suspicious if he doesn't know you. Don't take it personally. It's just how he is.
Another good nursery in this area, if you haven't been there (but you probably have), is Covington's in Rowlett. They're a little on the expensive side, IMO, and I don't see the same variety there. But the plants they do have are very nice. They're at the corner of 66 and Liberty Grove. Their best sale is in July, though.
covington's i know and shop there rarely anymore. they are incredibly expensive. in the old days before they built all of the greenhouses that was when they had good deals. now it's just a bunch of cookie cutter stuff for the most part and they want a lot for it. i usually find one plant a year there that is not common.
Hey I just picked up a Joseph's coat today at Mea's someone has to teach me now how to do the cuttings for roses!!!!!!
got peace , Chicago peace, Joseph's coat fragrant keepsake and ummmm can't recall the other one
Cocoa lulu might recall the 5th one I got
and I found the don juan climber for Char too
and mea's had two hibiscus dinner plate size so we got some seeds form them ...hehehehhe
Mibus2 is my hero! Thanks for the Don Juan climber.
Still hoping for a good deal on Tropicana. If no good deals out there I'll take lots of cuttings in hopes of at least one success. I would really love the Joseph's coat cuttings also. Hint hint.
hint received lol ..I can bring cuttings from the roses I picked up to the RU
I just happen to stop at Sexton's on the way home cause I saw the rack wagons out front on my way to meet cocoa and they have a bunch of the Don Juan
They have mini roses for $4 and HT's for $6
the climbers are all $5
they have one called princess diana or something like that it was pretty and fragrant but I already spent my wad so I'll ahve to try and go back after pay day

Does anyone have any hardy geraniums?
pbtx............yes you can bring me some cuttings but don't ruin a rose for my benefit. i am afraid i won't be able to root them and would hate to waste too many of them.
Yeah, I agree about Covington's. 20 years ago, when we bought our house, there was a second location very close by. We bought our red oak there and a lot of bushes. Steve Covington himself came out and helped us plant them, for no extra charge. He even helped us dig the monstrous hole for that tree. But they don't do things that way any more.
I do find good things there in July, when they're having their annual sale. Bought a concrete bench there a couple of years ago for just $20. The next year we found a copper chiminea for about $100. Last year, I bought a huge pot which I thought was too big for my husband to haul home. They charged me extra for a "two-person delivery." Two days later, when only one person delivered it, I went back for a refund. They said, "Oh, we don't charge by the person." I insisted, and eventually got my refund. But I did have to insist.
Oh, don't worry, my dad would not let me ruin his roses (LOL). There's plenty to cut, and he doesn't mind at all. I'll see what he has that suits your wants, and see if I can find some pictures.
