Hey good question, Wind. I don't know the first thing about clematis seeds, but I do have several varieties of clematis here.
SPECTACULAR 2007 COTTAGE GARDEN FRESH FALL SEED SWAP!
Suzy, that notch isn't the hole I'm talking about. Where I see a hole (and only on some seeds, not on all) is on the skinny edge of the seed... if the seed were a quarter, the hole would be right between the ridges on the outer rim of the quarter
Critter, I'm in the same boat as you. It's not all of the seeds. My thoughts, for the time being, are that I'll toss out those hole-y seeds, use the freezer method, and hope for the best.
As for clematis.... gotta love theseedsite cuz I took one look at her photo then went a hunting ... heh heh. I found fluffy clematis seeds from three different types. Mind you, I have no idea how close they would come to resembling their parents though... Here's one. It blooms rather heavily in April/May and I'm now getting a lighter second flush this week. I've probably got the name of it in my Journal, though I'm not positive.

suzy, that seedsite is a great link! thanks
wind, your amaranth is really pretty. I tried to grow some love-lies-bleeding this year with no success, but I guess I just had too much going. I think I like the upright one better! and I would like some feverfew. there's always room for small, pretty flowers. they make a nice backdrop for the big, showy ones.
critter, I was hoping to be able to overwinter the Victoria salvia. but after reading and hearing your vote, I probably can't. But they start so easily from seed I wouldn't be without them. what a gorgeous color! if they were more strongly scented I would replace my lavender.
pamsue, I like all of your hollyhocks. in fact, I never met a holly hock I didn't like. this year I wintersowed yellow single, pink single and mixed double. I wound up with 2 plants of each single and only one double. what amazed me was that one of the yellows bloomed for the first season! so I will have seeds. I don't know yet what the others will look like, but I am loving this one. I like the doubles and ruffly ones.
Grampapa, love the pink mallow and the yellow hollyhock. Beautiful!
Peggy
wrightie mentioned about the clematis maybe not coming true from the seed. I'm not sending the will goodwin seeds because I never thought of that. Since it is a hybrid it propably won't but who knows, it might or grow something else that is nice too. I'll try and grow it here as an experiment and let you all know for next year. I looked it up on google and DG plantfiles http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/82341/ and nothing on seed propagation was known. I'll stick with the tried and true :) sorry guys it is so obvious I'm new at this!

Suzy, if you think this would make more work for you, stop me dead in my tracks, but I think it might simplify things on your end and make everybody happier in the long run. see what you think...
if everybody would prioritize the list of wants that they send you, they would have a better chance of getting what they want and it would be easier for you to decide what to put in each person's envelope. for example, I really, really want phlox. somebody else may be interested in phlox, but if there's a choice they would rather have hollyhocks. I don't know how many you have signed up now, but if you have 10 packs of phlox seeds, you could look at all the lists, see who has phlox as their #1 choice, add that to their envelope, and cross off one of their choices. they could list as many choices as they send packets of seeds, plus some alternates (listed at the bottom as alternates). then if you still can't give them what they requested you can just add whatever you have. if you still have phlox seed after filling all the #1 priority requests, then look who has it as #2, etc.
I think for this to work, everybody would have to give a pretty good idea of what they are sending as soon as possible. I know we can't nail it down as to varieties, colors, and how many packets, but it would be nice to have a good idea what there is to choose from. I know a lot of folks have already said what they are sending and will add a note as they collect their seeds.
have I confused everybody?? sometimes I have a clear picture in my head but don't explain it very well. here's and example of a list (not my real list, but some of the choices I'm thinking about)
jan
I have something else to share as an extra if anybody wants some (nothing expected in return). I am collecting seed from my rose 'Sweet Sunblaze'. I have never tried starting a rose from seed before, but I want to try it this year. this rose sets a ton of hips. I will include the instructions from my 'Roses for Dummies' book. at this point, it is strictly an experiment. it is considered a miniature rose. the bush gets about 3' x 3'. the blooms are 1.5" across. it blooms all season long and would make a wonderful addition to a cottage garden.
I saw evening primrose on your list and hadn't thought about collecting any seeds. What type : tall yellow ,pink, or short yellow.
Jan,
Send a package of rose seeds to me, please! Thats really pretty. (Although I know I won't get seedlings that look like it.)
That's a great idea on prioritizing the wishlists, but it doesn't go far enough....after the exact-seed wishlist, I actually need a general "what I'm looking for" list -- Like: stuff over 24", anything orange, only perennials, full sun, part sun, cut flowers, anythting fragrant, edibles, stuff that blooms early, -- etc., so after the first 5 or 10 packs are divvied up I have a general idea of the sorts of things you're looking for.
Not everybody is listing what they're sending and I haven't posted a drop in the bucket as far as what I have to send.
I would also like to say that I need to put a ceiling on this so that somebody whose entire contribution is 10 packs of Cleome doesn't expect to get sent back 10 things extirely of their choosing. I want people to be happy, and I'm willing to spend the time on it, but I also need to keep the people who send in the well-packaged, choicest seeds happy. (Not because they sent in the choicest seeds, exactly, but they are more likely to already have the most common of things in their gardens, and have been successfully growing from seed for many years.)
Suzy
As a sort of P.S., I've been thinking about logistics.
How hard would it be for you all to make an alphabetical list of what you're sending and put it in the envelope, too? You can be honest, and if it's too hard, it's ok. I'm trying to think about how I can keep these together and yet sort them to where they are going without sending you back your own seeds. :)
I also thought if there was something specific you wanted, like Pamsue's pink/red & white bicolor semidouble Hollyhock, you should put PamSue's name on it so I know where to find the seeds. WHICH MEANS, PamSue will have to label her Hollyhocks exactly as she posted them. Not to pick on Pamsue, EVERYBODY needs to do that.
Gram's Double Yellow Hollyhock, Primrose Sue's Dwarf Red Cosmos, well, you get the idea.
I have set aside time, so that's not the problem, it's more of a case of if I can determine WHICH Cosmos you want and then find the exact package (in case there are only one or two of the kind you want sent in.)
Suzy
Shoot, making a list of what we're sending, alphabetically, is the *least* you could ask! Actually, I wonder if it wouldn't be best if we also posted the same list before we send them - perhaps a thread with "what we have" only?
Obviously we all know how to work a computer - it's easier than hand writing them down. If anyone has any problems with using a word-processing program, I or a number of other folks can give you easy directions.
And if anyone has problems IDing in Latin, I'm sure we can all help with that, too! I think I'm gonna need some of that....
That's so great!!! I love it!
Can we start a new thread with this topic? Would you re-post your pic, charlenesplants?
Pagancat
I think it would be great to start a new thread with the title "Why I love gardening!"
Okay, I'll start, ya'll chickens!
Rachie, I'm afraid I got waaayyy off track with the title, it ended up being "Inspirations: Digging in our past for our love of gardening"
LOL. Sounds like the title of a slide show.

does anybody have turtleheads?(hey, doesn't hurt to ask...maybe somebody forgot they had some LOL)
Suzy, no problem here with including an alpha list, both here and in my envie :0)
my Florence fennel is almost ripe...brought in a few seeds today
I have turtleheads , but they are still blooming so I don't know if the seed will be ripe in time
I have turtleheads, too, but they've only recently begun to bloom. I'll check back in if it appears that I'll have seeds...
Today I harvested seed from:
Yellow Hollyhock http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1359
Jacob's Ladder http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/392/
Nicotiana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/127646
They smell amazing in the evening after the sun goes down, it's such a wonderful perfume!
Rachierabbit, someone on the plant guide said the Jacobs ladder was invasive for them - have you had any problems with it? If not, I'd love some seed of it - looks lovely and I like the foiliage, too.
Rachel, I would love the nicotania also please.
Charlene
Pagancat
I have been growing Jacob's Ladder for the past six years and love it. So do the bees and butterflies. It does tend to self seed somewhat but it is very shallow rooted and easy to pull. If one seeds in a place that I don't want it I just pull it up, pot it and give it to a friend or plant it elsewhere in the yard.
Suzy - sent you dmail - ignore the first ones & just look at the last short one
garden6 - that is so exciting to hear those peony cotyledons are up - the parent tree peonies are in decline because of advancing shade, but should bloom a few more years (must say we have more sun of the dappled variety out back)
Critter - "make anything grow" http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3997980 - ??? Hah! I had just as many empty milk jugs after my wintersowing exploits as the rest of ya, and you should see what 100 MGs did to the survivors! Well, they couldn't get to the unplanted ones, so I guess you could say I'm not that big a nemesis to the plant kingdom - lol
ps Critter, thank you for those pickled pepper recipes - would love seed of those sweet pickle peppers, if possible
By the way, Antirrhinum hispanicum - a low, perennial snapdragon with kinda thick succulent, woolly-ish, gray-green leaves came through its battle with MGs - what a happy shock - hope to see flowers next year
Charlene - loved that pic of your aunt with her flowers - wish I had one of my New England grandma in hers
I'm still harvesting seed and will post what I'm sending a little later. I'll prioritize the ones that I have that others show interest in - like poppies, foxgloves & roses. If we can keep posting what we want, that'll help my prioritizing.
May I join too? I have seeds coming ripe and I haven't done this before. FYI Illoquin- the creamy Marigolds and State Fair Zinnia you sent me are doing great.
Maggie
Hi Maggie, Join on in!
I think we have a couple people who need blue Porterweed.
Wasn't that on the list of things in your garden?
Suzy
Blue, I'll happily send you some 'Sweet Pickles' seed. That's one I always grow a few extras of anyway, so I'd be happy to start some seedlings for you... maybe we can entice you out this way in spring with the promise of seedlings! :-)
gardengus & wrightie, if the turtleheads aren't ready in time, maybe we can arrange a private trade later for something I have that you missed out on in the swap
gardengus, on the primrose, I would love pink, but any kind would be nice
critter, in case I didn't say it outright, I would really like some of your ornamental peppers
I have never grown nicotiana or jacob's ladder. I would love to try them both!
hey, I posted a reply after Suzy's posts on the 24th and it has disappeared! I'll have to report it to the powers that be.
I just clipped off the heads on my sons double decker cone flower if anyone wants to try seeds from it. Still digging around to see what else I can come up with!
I would also love some primrose seeds. Pink and yellow both. And the lavender.
Does anyone have any catnip seeds?
Gram, just put them on your list! :-) I've got seeds drying now from 'Sweet Pickles', 'Fluroescent Purple', and 'Pretty Purple Pepper' (a cute miniature one)... they're just starting to get some fully ripe peppers on them, but I think I'll be able to send in 4 or 5 packets of each, and if I manage to do another harvest next month for additional seeds then I'll send in a few more. Do you think more than 5 people are likely to want peppers? I don't want to leave you with unwanted seeds.
I don't think anybody has mentioned columbine seeds yet... I have 4 different ones drying, but due to a labeling issue I don't know which one is which. The possibilities are magenta, pale lavender, 'Black Barlow', and yellow. I could combine them for a 4 color mix, which might be better than doing individual packets that say "contains one of the following varieties." Anybody want mixed columbine seeds, or should I just skip them?
I've got loads of echinacea, rose campion, black eyed susan, etc out there... but I'm figuring that other folks have those covered, so I'm trying to concentrate on seeds I haven't seen mentioned.
I don't think I'm going to have basil seeds in time for the swap.. if I do, it'll be close, since I like to dry them for a couple of weeks. But I've done a SASBE offer for basils the last couple of years, and hopefully I'll have enough seeds to do so again this winter.
I should have frozen my earlier harvested hollyhock seeds... they are full of weevils... evil little beasts! Sorry, I didn't mean to tease with the photo. I don't really know how to prevent their getting at the seeds without spraying something that would harm all the "good" insects that enjoy those blooms.
I did get some label slips ready to go, which should streamline things next month. So far, these are the things I'm planning to send:
Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed, cream blooms, might be 'Ice Ballet')
Burgundy Gaillardia
Catnip
Helianthus, unknown perennial variety (my "Not-Chocolate-Daisy")
Columbine, 4 color mix
Pretty Purple Pepper
Florescent Purple Pepper
Sweet Pickles Pepper
'Lemon Gem' marigold
LOL, cat, I was just wondering if anybody would want catnip seeds! I harvested a ton of them (well, a couple of tablespoons anyway, which is a lot!).
I need to start a note-to-self for keeping track of requests...
Oh critter, I need catnip!
LOL, we posted at the same time. Yes I definately would love to have some if you have plenty.
I have plenty! LOL I'll put in a generous packet for you. Once you have catnip, you'll have it every year if you let some of the blooms go to seed... it pops up all over here, but it's easy enough to pull out where you don't want it.
