That's what I was wanting. Do you have cats? I'm wondering if they really like it or if that's just a myth! If so, will they let it grow or are they "wallowing" in it all the time? LOL!
SPECTACULAR 2007 COTTAGE GARDEN FRESH FALL SEED SWAP!
Blake was much less "into" it this year than previous years, not sure why. But generally, a crushed fresh sprig of it tossed onto the deck will pretty much glue him to that spot as he gleefully rolls over and over and over on it. Not all cats adore catnip, some seem to be indifferent to it. If your cat loves it so much that he just destroys plant after plant, a good suggestion I've read here is to place an ornamental bird cage over the plant... the cats can get at anything that grows out beyond the cage, but the base of the plant is protected.
Good idea. I have 3 "outdoor" cats, so I may end up having to do just that. thanks!
Critter- I would love pepper seeds! They sound delightful, I make alot of fresh salsa from my tomatoes. I would also love some of your "mixed" columbine seeds.
Cat- I grow catnip as well. Our three kitties are indoor and I bring in fresh the stuff and rub it between my hands which releases the essential oils (that's what they like about it) then my hubby and I watch and bust up laughing at their crazy feline antics! Catnip is more potent when it is dried. There are alot of neighbor kitties that hang out in our yard and they don't bother my catnip (maybe they just havent found it yet!)
Should we be asking for what we want now or later?
Oh, Critter, please put in the columbine seed mixed or whatever. I've always wanted to grow some - I see in plantfiles someone in my area had success, so that's all I need to know.
Gardengus-
What color are your columbine seeds? Thanks, Rachel
Pagancat, if you see something you'd especially like, I'd suggest that you say so... I'll try to put in however many packets of a variety that people request, plus one extra if I can swing it... but if 8 people put my 'Lemon Gem' marigolds on their wish lists that they send to Suzy but only 3 people mention it on the thread, then I probably won't put more than 4 or 5 packets in my envelope... and 3 people won't get any.
Just be sure that you also include what you want (both specifically and generally) on your wish list for Suzy, as she's asked.
Budbloom, I've got your name down next to "columbine mix" also. :-)
I've heard that columbines can cross, too, but so far all the seeds I've grown out to blooming size have come "true" to the color of the plant they came from. That's a beautiful columbine, and I could use some shorter ones! I'd love seeds for that one, please!
Wrightie
I would love some Standing Cypress Seed :) Rachel
I only have a few packs will send what I have. Usually I don't collect seed they seem to self sow, and I just transplant in the spring.
Thanks, I'll peruse this thread again and start dreaming in color!
OK, I'll put your name on a packet of columbines and on Fl. Purple peppers (will add heat but probably not much flavor to your salsa -- but such a pretty plant!). I think I've got some 'Fish Pepper' seeds left from last year, and if I can put my hands on them I'll toss them in for you as a bonus.
Suzy,
Oh Yeah! I got Porterweed!! Blue and some Red. The orange hasn't bloomed this year yet but I have buds and hopefully later some seeds.
Thank you so much for doing this- and I thought Co-ops were hard! This looks like a bear. Blessings on the organizationally gifted!
I'll work on getting a proper list.
Maggie
Boy, there have been a lot of posts since I last checked this thread! This is an enthusiastic bunch! Pagancat, the person standing next to the Great Bellflower is my 6 foot husband. I always use him as my measuring stick!
Soil here is yukky clay, heavily amended with compost. I get volunteer seedlings in both full sun and part (afternoon) shade areas. Catnip is not too picky, although it gets bigger where there's more sun and more water.
Heya, WZ! I always rack my brain trying to come up with seeds for you that you don't already have... I just got some seeds from my Persian Coneflower, Centaurea dealbata, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31509/. Would that one interest you? :-)
I am very sorry, but I have to drop out. I fell last week and hurt my back. Thought it was better but today I can't use my leg. So it don't look like I will be harvesting any seed anytime soon. I am truly sorry for any inconveniance.(sp?)
Kathy
OMG - I hope you're okay! Poor thing!
Oh, no! Kathy, just take good care of yourself and get better! When you see me posting about sending and trading seeds this winter, please drop me a line via Dmail and let me know if there's anything you've been looking for... I'll be happy to share!
critter, thanks so much. am going todr. at 2pm. will let everyone know whats going on
kathy
jordankittyjo I hope you are ok and get well soon ~
Kathy, we'll be waiting and hoping/praying for good news and an easy "fix!"
Suzi, I'm sure I'll be sending in more packets than I want or need in return... Can you either send some of my extras to Kathy or use them as "credit" for her so she can still get some seeds from this swap? I'll send some extra stamps, too.
So, Kathy, please let us know if there's anything you're particularly looking for, OK? :-)
Kathy,
Thinking positive thoughts for your dr visit today. Keep us posted. Hugs, Rachel
Wind-
I love the "catnip party" picture! The look on your Shepards face is great, "What is wrong with you goofy cats!"
Kathy, so sorry you got hurt. I'd be glad to send in some extras plus stamps so you can still get your envelope. So do as Critter suggested and post a wish list. we can pitch in and send you some things so you don't miss out. just concentrate on healing and let us know what the doc says.
....great ideas, and Kathy, you can just post your wishlist here and I'll print it out for you. Hopefully it is just a temporary condition and you'll be back to your oleself by the weekend.
Suzy
Anyone interested in Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina'? Should I post a pic?
That's a gorgeous one, and very "cottage" in appearance! I've got some in my garden, and was hoping to share extra seeds, but I've been timing it wrong for seed collection -- either they're not ripe, or they've already dropped. I'd love to see your photo... the one I have doesn't really do justice to the colors.
I collected seeds today from a couple of good butterfly nectar plants, Agastache 'Honey Bee White' and 'Honey Bee Blue'. They'll bloom the first year from wintersown seed, but might be a bit runty looking. But the second year they take off... 3 ft. tall and loads of bloom spikes!
Critter,
I love Agastache, I will definetly be adding both to my "want" list!
:-) I've got you covered! They're pretty prolific with their seeds, so they're easy to include in this swap.
Critter, I could use some pointers on agastache seed collection. I've got tons of agastache mexicana.
I just clipped the dried bloom stalks, put them upside down into a paper bag or cottage cheese bucket, and gave them a brisk shaking... loads of seed fell to the bottom.
Thanks! I'll give it a try. Hopefully the finches haven't gotten to them yet.
Can anyone tell me how to collect seeds on butterfly davidi?
Suzy. I keep rereading your first post and I'm still confused. How many packs of seeds does each person send? I know we are limiting varieties to 10 of each kind. My question is, if we send in lets say eight different kinds of seeds. Do you send that person 8 back?
I understand all the other rules regarding seed count per packet. Thanks.
Confused in Georgia, otherwise know as:
Arlene
I think the idea is that you get back however many packets you send... if you send 8 packs (and they don't have to be 8 different kinds), you'll get 8 packets of seed in return. If you send 20, you'll get 20.
Suzi, it did occur to me the other day that, since this swap is getting pretty big, you might want to set an upper limit to the number of packets. ?
