My house is completly surrounded by palms, the do make a fantastic canopey but the leave nothing as ground cover, all the soil is coverd by pebles and hard from the palm tree roots, how do i prepare the soil for ground cover plants in an area with little sunlight and solid soil?

Hi Bona_Dea, sorry I cant help you on your question other than to say you may need a mechanical digger/rotovator to break up the soil, or a good strong guy who is interested enough to use a pick axe to do it by hand, there is an Australian Dgarden forum where some folks will have had your very problem and solved it, so try going over to that forum for the right answers for plants etc. good luck. Plant bromeliads. I don't know your zones but it seems if you can grow palms you can grow bromies.

I had great success using bromies around palms- you don't have to worry about the surface roots because the bromeliads are epiphytic. You can just prop them up with rocks until they establish themselves or if you're totally lazy just toss them into place. Just make sure of the sun/shade of your location so you can choose bromies with the proper tolerance.
