I had great success using bromies around palms- you don't have to worry about the surface roots because the bromeliads are epiphytic. You can just prop them up with rocks until they establish themselves or if you're totally lazy just toss them into place. Just make sure of the sun/shade of your location so you can choose bromies with the proper tolerance.
