the pollen on my celosia seems to be like a drug. I thought this bumblebee was either dead or asleep until it finally moved a little. it's blurry because the wasps that were also visiting made me a little nervous. there were also flies and some other insects.

here's one of the wasps...yellow jacket?? I can't tell the difference between those and the paper wasps without looking them up.

Pixie - I've only seen Peaches and Dreams of that group, can't recalled what it looks like though.

Jan - You mean you've been watching this whole time? I feel so violated. Dahlias look good, color is sort of way off on Lauren Michelle - try yelling at your camera. I have about 5-10 to open too, they really get behind the 8 ball when they start slow and get overshadowed by other ones. Hard to beat a Wildwood Marie flower, but I've only had 2 of those on a 6' plant this year. Like the Champagne Cocktail rose.

This Jabberbox grew in MA last year.

I like the Mango Meadowbright echinacea. Not the most prolific, but good flowers.

I sure like these flowers for photos, takes a lot of shots to get a focused one though.

I know what you mean Al. I only got blue & purple ones, I like your lighter colored ones.

Grammy, I like that sedum with the yellow flowers. I have the small stonecrop that is reddish, but mine doesn't seem to spread like that.

Onewish - I am laughing hard at that wormaphobe encounter. Hysterical! I guess she doesn't have any need for good soil! As traumatized as I can be about the snakes, I love seeing the earthworms in the garden.

Jan - nice to see you back with such beautiful pics!

Kim - I second the suggestion that you buy some worms. I have very acid soil with good earthworms in it. With sand though, I'm not so sure.....

You all have been busy today, lovely pics of gorgeous roses and zinnia and dahlias oh my, all very beautiful, even the bees. They all seem to be working in a frenzy now, I think they know the time is getting short. :) Al and Pix, gotta love those BB and the Mango echinacea is very yummy indeed.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Such beautiful pics everyone. I love them all!! Eleanor

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Champagne Cocktail is to die for!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree Pirl. Love Al's Ferncliff one too. So what's your secret Al? Why does it seem no one else has anywhere near your success with Dahlias? Do you only give away the duds??!! Seriously, how do you think it can be explained. I was ready to say I'm ready for them after seeing some of the gorgeous ones, but if they are really a lot of trouble, I just don't have the time nor patience.

Great shots Anita! Which Dahlia is that?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll be able to tell you when I dig it up.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Did you label the tuber?!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

The ink does last pretty long on them, so I wouldn't be suprised - unless that tuber rots. It's Lucky Number, I sent out a lot of those and it looks like they've all flowered too. Patience is needed - I won't lie.

Nice bouquet Anita.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I have one dahlia!! I think it has had 3 blooms so far. I'd love some more after seeing Al's beautiful pics. I've posted this pic before and you guys 'ID'ed it as Thomas Edison. Eleanor
p.s. When do you dig them up in the fall?

Great shots .... starting yesterday Grammy Al & Anita

Eleanor - the Dahlia forum has a sticky at the top and that probably has directions for lifting and storing. You begin after the first killing frost.

Here's one I grew from seed, which is taller than I am.

Same one, from a distance to show how tall it is.

Another from seed. The person who sent the seed never said how tall they get and I thought they'd be border dahlias and made the mistake of not asking.
