"Lucky Ducky"
What's Blooming? #13
Thanks Pirl, I'll check it out. Beautiful pics pirl and i just love Wildwood Marie. That's one to put on my list for next year. Also love the color of Lucky Ducky - think I'll put that on my list also!! Eleanor
Anita - what a beautiful bouquet!
Eleanor - I love the color of your dahlia!
Pirl - All beautiful as well! Your patio is also lovely! The bricks look so pristine! I have the same brick configuration, but after 13 years, the patio lacks the crispness yours has. I have to keep the weeds out of the mortar between the bricks. Vinegar helps!
We had blessed rain yesterday afternoon, last night and again this morning. Hooray!! So very needed!!!
Happy Sunday, Everyone!!
Thanks Al - Victor, Al marks all his tubers. Unfortunately, in my haste to plant this spring, I never thought to mark the soil with a plant tag.
Arlene - I've grown dahlia's from seed too. I am going to repeat that next year as well since I loved the results.
Thank you, everyone.
DB - our terrace is 15 years old and still looks fine - no problems. I get weeds out with my fire torch in springtime and bleach it each November - December.
Anita - I made the labels but the plants have grown so much I can't see them and have to search. I should have just written the names and layout on paper (in addition to labels) and taped them on something on this desk. I love the lush look to the little border dahlias, Anita, and will definitely grow more next year.
Terrace on July 4th:
Great shots everyone. I hadn't been back to this thread in a few days (it's been a very busy weekend!), and I had to go slowly and savor each and every one of the photos. I can never get enough of looking at someone else's blooms.
Louise: funny you should have rain yesterday. We had none!! And to think you are only a half hour away from me! Isn't New England the greatest for picking and choosing what weather happens where? LOL!!

Great dahlias everyone! Pix love those bricks and your beds look wonderful. In the long shot of the tall red dahlia, what is the little red plant underneath? Really pretty setting you have made there.
Great shots Pirl.
Thanks. Inside on my first break already!
Pirl your yard is simply beautiful. I can only dream!
Always love to see your garden, Pirl!
I haven't grown dahlias since my last place. You all are getting me to think about them as I wait for the aster "show."
Stunning photos, ngam!
Thanks dpoitras - the book "Perennials for your Garden", by Alan Bloom, 1981, was the biggest inspiration.
Thanks, boojum. From what I read in spring dahlias can be ordered from Red Hawk Dahlias now. They sell out fast for the hot selling ones. Most are (or were) between $1.00 and $3.00 - cheaper than most annuals.
Onewish - what a way to wake up to all those happy faces! So cute!
My excuse for this break is to get two more addresses for packages. I'm sweating out there already!
Pirl - what a beautiful terrace garden! I should try your techniques next year! Does the bleach not seep to surrounding plants? From what I see in your photo, I would guess it hasn't hurt a thing!
Candyce - We not only got rain yesterday, but last night and all morning too.....the perfect kind that really waters things! Did you get some this morning??
Ngam - love your color combinations......so pretty! I don't have much left to photograph now.
Al - pretty japonica.....is that perennial in your area?
Thanks guys, I thought I would get a few last shots in while things were still blooming, we all know it won't be long now.
Onewish those doggies are too adorable, I bet they keep you entertained every day.
Al I love your color combos too. Is that purple fountain grass? Luv it with the coleus. I have Kerria on my list of need to get plants.
Thanks, Al. Your area is so nice and neat and the colors are amazing.
DB: the bleach hasn't ever hurt a thing. Generally I get some of the terrace very muddy at the end of the year with moving plants so that's why I bleach it.
Yep. Getting off an on rain this morning, Louise.
Pirl, your place is fantastic. I just love looking at the things you grow, and the combinations, too.
ngam: I love all the blue. So many different hues.
Celeste, that color combo is great!! My one pumpkin is getting pretty big too. I made the mistake of planting some alyssum seeds in my sunflower and pumpkin areas, and in effect, I just added more weeds to get out. I was going to plant some morning glories to climb up the sunflowers, but I didn't get there. [Horrors, Victor....I know!]
BUMMER - I just clicked on a pic to see it better again and lost my message I was going to post. I was personalizing my post and I had to keep going back cause I couldn't remember who posted what. So I'm returning to my usual post - great job everyone!! Eleanor
Thanks, Candyce and Pixie. Love those colors together, Pixie. What makes you think I ever want to come inside - I don't but nine hours today was enough.
DB one package of alyssum is enough for a lifetime! No MG's for me either! If they didn't reseed so well I'd think about it but they do and birds eat them and depost the seeds near and far - mostly near.
Yes that's Purple Fountain grass, one of my must have annuals every year.
Kerria japonica is a shrub.
Is your Kerria in a shady location Al? I understand it is a good shrub for a shaded spot and I did not realize it would bloom a little throughout the season.
Oh your rose looks so happy with drops of rain water on it, very nice pic. Love the color, name? Oh and could you send some rain here, we are still waiting for a drop or two.
Nice shots booj. ngam, my Kerria blooms sporadically as well. For some reason, after many years, this year mine have lost all their foliage as the Summer progressed. I'll cut them way back soon and see what happens. They had been a favorite.
