Is this turning into the silly thread??
What's Blooming? #13
which one isn't?
Hey, we're serious gardeners here!
Aren't we?
Just gave me another idea for the t-shirt - 'NE Forum, cheaper than Prozac.'
No need to share personal stuff Al.
Have you gotten into the 40's at night yet?
No - a few mid 50's.
I'm in the 40's most nights for quite a few years yet.
Oh, I love it!!! It is just too true!! LOL
Then keep getting behind while you can.
Al, seriousness aside, have you updated your Coneflower critique?
We had 39 degrees 2 nights ago! We had to turn the heat on because we had a baby sleeping in the house. It was so cozy to wake up to a nice fire (compliments of my DH) in the stone fireplace in our bedroom. My idea of luxury is a nice fire, a hot cup of coffee and a good book to read in the pre-dawn hours. Now that I'm retired, I guess it's a good thing I don't lean towards furs and the QE2! Give me a weed-free garden too...
Sounds very cozy Louise, but not something I'd expect this early! Do you still wake up about the same time you did while working? Most retired people seem to.
Not too much happening in the garden right now, the balloon plants are still going but dwindling now (which is good because I have been waiting on seeds to ripen which seems like forever!)
A single last bloom on Daylily Janice Brown.
I have been splitting things (groundcovers) up and moving them to other places that I need color next spring :)
I was VERY excited about this bloom today though :) A big triumph for me as I have found these a little tricky to grow and have spent alot of time reading about them :)

Collected my first pod off of Daylily Antique Rose. I got 6 seeds. Was quite tickled about that. This was my first year hybridizing.
Really got to spend alot of time in the gardens this past weekend. Lots of serenity and gratitude deeply felt. Looked around at many of the plants from friends here at Dave's and thought of each one today :)
Hope you all had a nice weekend.
Kim
Very nice Kim. What a cool looking plant.
Al - loved your "Fall is just around the corner" shot.
Polly - I think I did the floopy all by myself: might have something to do with mirrors.
Victor - I used to have to get up at 5:00. Now I usually wake up around 6:00ish and just enjoy the morning. It feels like I'm cheating myself out of the best part of the day if I sleep much later than that. ....About the fire being early....it has always gotten cool during the nights even in summer here on the hill, so we have often had a fire to read by in the early mornings throughout the summer. That's one of the reasons why I rearranged the house so we could use the old summer kitchen as our bedroom. With old houses you have to be creative and think out of the box a lot!
Kim - lovely thoughts....gratitude feels so good! Congrats on your DL seed success!! I want to try hybridizing some of my DLs next summer if I can figure out how to do it. I'm sure there must be a "how to" here at DG somewhere. So many of you have mentioned succeeding in doing that, and it seems like it would be fun.
Not hard Louise - just 'be the pollinator' or 'be the bee'!
Sounds like Ralph Snodsmith, Victor!
Victor - what flowers have you hybridized? Daylilies? It must be so exciting to see a whole new plant bloom with a surprise flower???
I'm not Victor but it is fun to hybridize.
None.
Thank you Victor for the compliment on Zora :) She's such a cutie *lol*
Louise, hybidizing was quite easy and I'm ashamed that I have to admit, I didn't keep any records. I just dabbed, cut of the anthers and then waited *lol*. I HAD marked the 3 pod parents I wanted to keep seeds from and the rest I"m giving away. I just had alot of fun doing it but knew I couldn't keep all the seed.
This year i have let everything go to seed to share with as much as I can. Next year I want to try the deadheading and cutting back routine just to see if I get more blooms and to give the plants a break not having to produce seed. The annuals I am going to let seed and I may keep 1 pod on some things but for the most part I'm going to deadhead and cut back as much as possible.
I'd like to one of these days though.
Much too addictive.
I'm going to try pollinating Gooseneck Loosestrife with Star of Yelta MG.
Hi Pirl........please tell me what flowers you have "created"....I'd love to hear from everyone who has done it.
Kim - sounds like you know what you are doing!
Does it work to cross hybrids too? I guess it would.....oh, I'm going to do it for sure!
With Dl's, the only thing to keep in mind is that you can only cross diploids with other diploids and tetras with other tetras.
I can just see that kudzu result, Victor........but at least it would be colorful along the interstate highways where the kudzu just looked dense!
Oh Goodness Louise, I certainly DON"T know what I'm doing *lol*. I just know you have to cross TETS w/TETS and DIPS w/DIPS *lol*. I have NO idea what I have out there for crosses. I know some didn't take but an awful lot did. I won't have any idea what they even look like for 2 years or so *lol*. I just know I liked the pod parents blooms but don't even know what crosses I got seeds from *lol* so it REALLY is going to be a surprise *lol*
I'm sending most of the other seeds to another Dave's family member who has dug a bed and is naming it "Kim's Krossings" *lol* I have NO idea what they will look like but she's promised to send pictures *lol*
DB - far too many to write about but the first was such a thrill that I have it framed in the kitchen.
VICTOR, BEHAVE!
Cool name for the new bed, Kim. Dips and Tets, you both say.........hmmmmm, I have some learning to do before I set out on this adventure. It will be fun though!
Nice idea, Pirl! Can you post a pic of it? You probably have already but before my time??
Good luck on the Tet offensive.
If I hadn't messed up my photo program I probably could post it. I'll try for tomorrow, OK?
