I moved into a rent house with a lot of plants a couple of months ago, and I'm not a gardener! I need help identifying these plants! We've had 40+ inches of rain this year on the TX gulf coast, so some of these plants are a little out of hand, but I don't know what to do about it! The only things I can identify are a lot of hibiscus plants that were about 8 inches tall when we moved in, and now are as tall as me!
The red flowers looked like this when we moved in, but now have no flowers and dead brown woody stalks. Some green foliage is left, but this bed really holds moisture, and some of them died off completely after the large amounts of rain (I assume that's why).
Plant ID #1
Gladioulas (sp)
Do I need to do anything special with them, or will they take care of themselves?
i doubt you'd have to bother in texas, but in PA i have to pull those bulbs out of the ground for winter. i just cut them down once the flowers have died. no idea if that's the 'correct' thing to do but it works for us :p
No need to dig them up for the winter in TX. Cut off the flower stalks but leave the greenery on until it dies back naturally in the fall. The bulbs need to store up energy for next year, and they do it via the leaves after they are through blooming.
