Today's Weather in Your Garden

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Started out today as a beautiful day, took my daughter to the dr, came out to overcast and real humid, still cloudy now.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I agree Candyce! 77 here and perfect.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

84 and very humid here. Mostly cloudy. Not nice.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Hot and Humid!! Had a T-storm around noon. I tried to work outside but could not - I got used to the cooler weather!! Eleanor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Eleanor! Haven't seen too many posts from you lately. Missed you! I agree about the abrupt change. I'm a cool weather person. 55 - 75 would be a great year-round range.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Sunny, hot and humid here. Looking back fondly on those stuttering days.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Regardless of what the weather has been like this week, we should thank our lucky stars we do not live in Ohio or Illinois. Those poor folks are dealing with flooding and record rains.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And Texas before them.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Right! Who ever thought of Texas as a rainforest?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Only one time did I wish I lived somewhere else....during the ice storm. 11 days w/out electricity, melting snow & ice to wash dish's, flush the toilet ect...and others went much longer. I would of hopped a plane but they were grounded too.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Right! I remember the ice storm - half of Quebec was shut down because the electrical transmission towers toppled. I hadn't thought about having to melt snow to flush toilets. Are you on a well system?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ooh, that's awful. When was that Celeste?

North Augusta, ON

Yuck, I remember that, we had no hydro for 14 days...was the winter of 99 I believe. A 2 mile section of power lines fell down the road from us like dominoes. It was definitely an experience I never want to repeat!!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

That's the great thing about the Northeast (besides the NE Forum), our weather may be annoying but we don't seem to get the severe storms like tornados, hurricanes, bad flooding, etc. My two girls went to California last Fri through Wednesday for a wedding. Flying back over the midwest was a nightmare - the storms caused a lot of turbulance. My youngest who flys a lot never wanted to get back on a plane, but was informed Thrusday when she went back to work she had to go to Baltimore!! ( She called a little while ago and she had a smooth trip) Eleanor
ps - I haven't had too many posts lately cause I finally got around to doing my spring cleaning and I've been busy, busy, busy!! Plus taking care of my gardens. There are not enough hours in the day!!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Forgot about that ice storm but I think I'd rather have that than flooding or hurricanes. Eleanor

North Augusta, ON

Yup....take ice over hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, any day!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I prefer earthquakes - no warning - 10 seconds and it is over!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We are lucky in the NE, weather-wise. And we get the great change of seasons to boot.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh I love NE!!!!! I want to live here for the rest of my life...

nice night... a bit muggy but ok!!!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Kassia....I feel the same way. I left New England in 1978 and returned in 2006. A short hiatus. The change in seasons and the changes when you drive from the coast to the inland river basins to the mountains is wonderful.

For a decade I lived in the middle of the Mojave desert. People would visit and want to go here and there (usually hundreds of miles away...distances out there look short on a map). I would tell them, "Go outside, look around. Things look pretty much the same if you drive for three hours in any direction". Then I lived in the Palm Beaches. Essentially the same there too. The beach were I was looked pretty much the same as the beach 100 miles to the north or south.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

There are lots of truly beautiful places in the North East - and great cities - but my heart belongs to the Pacific Northwest. I believe that people get patterned to geography the way baby birds will pattern to the first being they see when they hatch. I grew up in Vancouver, and although I left when I was 22, I still long to live there. Alas, as one of the most liveable places on the planet, many other people also want to live there; real estate prices are out of sight.

One thing I have noticed in the North East is how friendly Americans are. . . honestly, Americans should do something about their media image. This is how most of the world learns about Americans, and frankly, the media really do Americans a great disservice. The image abroard is that Americans are money-grubbing and prone to extreme violence, and either intellectually stunted or devious (think of popular movies or tv shows). I think America needs a media image that much more closely matches reality. The people here that I have encountered are great!

The Ice Storm hit us Jan. 1998 and yes I have well water. Try living in house with 5 kids and you can't wash clothes, bathe, and you have no lights. Depends on the family but you either get closer as a family or you have a feud like the McCoy's & The Hatfields going on!!
We played Yahtzee, Life, Cribbage,ect... to pass the time. Bottled water, candles, batteries and propane were scarce and the roads were blocked with debris so you couldn't get to town. (I live approx. 17 miles from the nearest town with supermarkets) I do not have a Rite Aid or a hospital out here in the country. My son has tons of meds he takes and is incontinent so add that to the equation and you know why I wanted to hop a plane!

Michaela:

I appoint you as our American Image Improver!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

The weather here this AM:

I am a few hours later than usual. I had a few things to do before I could look outside at the thermometer and other stuff.

Temp: 72 degrees
Very heavy, wet air, so the dew point must be about the same. Can't see the sky for the thin fog.

The little red box in the right bottom corner of my computer screen was flashing a Heat Advisory for our area for all of this afternoon and most of the evening.

I am not looking forward to the heat and humidity at all!!!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Candyce...must be huge system as we have the same conditions down here.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

76 and 92% humidity at 9:15. Absolutely gross. Predicted high about 92 with humidity.

Michaela, if your neighbors had a completely erroneous opinion of you because they chose to believe whispers and rumors, is it your responsibility to get things straight, or theirs???

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

79 degrees and the air is so thick it is hard to breathe. Very sticky, yucky day. It is so humid you can see it. Hot, hazy, humid.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree, DP. From what I have read of the advisory, it covers most of NE - leaving most of NY a bit drier, and of course, along the seacoasts. Yuck!!!!

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

I am praying for rain!! We need it so badly! But if it rains it is going to be a nasty one. It's that kind of day here in the good ole northeast! Even the birds are quiet here today.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Fog is only just starting to burn off now.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well so much for the nice dry fall air. It's very heavy air out there already. The sun has now burned off the overcast and is heating things up. Climbed 10 degrees in the last half hour to 78. It's going up at least another 10 or so today. Some showers would be welcome.

North Augusta, ON

Today it is overcast, temp is 81F, humidity is 100 %, great for plants, yucky for people. Calling for thunder storms sometime today....rained like blazes last night, knocked over a bunch of my phlox...

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Up to 83 with the high expected to reach 93. Heat index should be around 103, they say. Drink your water, everyone!

Sorry about your phlox, threegardeners

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

It is getting quite lethal out there now. HHH, 88degrees and climbing, you take three steps and your soaked. Back in to the ac. :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nasty - 90 and 65% humidity. AC all the way!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

91 here, but with the humidity feels like a 100 or more, workred a bit in the garden earlier but finally had to give up, where is the oxygen? lol, so glad I have AC, almost feels cold in the house at 75'

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes but a good cold!!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

yes, feels great, Victor

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Very Hot and humid. Just got out of the shower after spending 7 hours in the garage staining my wood deck furniture. Don't know why I needed to shower, I was already soaked!! LOL I know I picked the worst day of the year for this job, but it was the only day I had help from my oldest daughter. Waiting for another T-storm to cool us off. We had a good one about 3:00 this morning. Eleanor

p.s. Glad to be inside with the ac on now.

North Augusta, ON

No ac here, just a big old floor fan, sounds like a jet taking off but it keeps the air flowing......and keeps all the dust to one side of the living room....lol
