Pink blizzard x Purple blizzard grow out results!!!!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Here are the parent plants and the results of this growout will be posted here.

To go back to the thread featuring the F1 parent plant go here. This is pink x purple blizzard crossed plant from which all these seeds in the grow out came from.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/723601/

(The pink blizzard pod parent was identified in this link by RonC. in 2006 as fuschia blizzard.)

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/650958/

Both seed and pod parent were purchased from a open pollinated source and were supposed to be pink Hannahabuki but since one came out purple that means there had to have been cross pollination because it looks like pink doesn`t produce purple but a purple flowered vine can carry for pink.

So there is some history on the flowers in the grow out. They are Hannahabuki mixes.

Oh, good...now I know what to expect!

Expect the unexpected. :)

That was fast!! what date did you plant those? Wow, mine just started to vine this past week, but they are growing fast.

I planted at the time I started the distribution of seeds so I`m a week or more ahead of everyone. July 4th to now is about 6 weeks and 5 days. More buds are developing. I see two different colors on the vines. The plants are getting loaded down with buds like normal. One vine color is a rosy red color vine and the other color on the vines I see is a deep purple color on the stems. I`ll take pictures and save them for when I share again.

I`m predicting 2 more weeks for yours to bloom.

Karen

guess what???? there are two buds on two seperate seedlings here.. they are only about 12 inches tall too. I had to take out the magnifying glass to make sure.. This has got to be the fastest ever for me.. Two weeks, you are probably right.

I think I saw buds on mine also. : ) Below is a picture of the plants. And, the next picture will be of a bud,...I think.
It was dark outside, so I couldn't see very good.

Holy crap! Mine are growing slow.....it'll pick up next week when we get get a bit cooler. Can't wait to see these flowers.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Mine are growing slow, too....about 3 inches tall. They will get there eventually and I may be bringing them all inside in October for blooming.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Mine are growing fast and budding out everywhere. These are about to begin blooming.

Anytime a plant is sitting there looking glum and not growing you need to feed it. Miracle Grow Bloom Booster flower food works great. You mix it as directed and pour enough to water the plant every 7-10 days. Too much shade will result in limp pathetic do nothing plants. In addition to worrying about the heat killing them you have to find the balance between getting enough rays for them to grow and bloom well without overheating them. I have used pieces of burlap to filter some of the suns rays so it kept them cool in the heat of the day without shading them out too much.

Four out of the five seedlings have buds.. i even planted one seed from the chachamaru on the same day because I didn't get but a couple of seeds for next year and that one also has a bud, it only had 4 true leaves on it, and I too off two of them because of mites, it must be 6 inches tall if that..

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

My Chachamaru was nearly pollen free. I never saw a mature pollen anther on the plant exept on one day and I lost the freaking seed pod. :( darn it

Well next time I`ll get one.

I`m anticipating what colors could be produced by this growout. So far there is one pink blizzard and it has a rosy tone to it. I`m going to attempt to track the patterns of color on the vines by marking each flower color and then seeing how the pattern progresses by following the tags on the vines.

Wish me luck. :)

I think my problem with the slow growth has been the cool nights we have been having this august. Can you believe 43 degrees overnight, this time of year? That's really strange! We need a heat wave but seem to be having trouble getting out of the 70's during the daytime. Well, there's always September.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Yes, the 40`s will slow them down. That Is strange. We are in the 100`s and night time sometimes it feels muggy and it is hard for everyone to stay asleep even with the air going constantly.

Mine are getting big but no buds. Beth I feel your pain, it's been dropping down to the 50s here at night the past few days with non stop rain. I'm glad it hasn't budded yet, I already lost a few on some other ones. Hopefully it supposed to be back up in the 90s come Sunday. I just want to see the sun again!!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

This is how it goes with grow outs. Sometimes you get something special and sometimes you get so so blooms. You never know what will happen. Crops can fail for sure for whatever eason even with the best of care. I`m hoping for you that the weather will improve and your plants pull through.

I`m going out for more seeds to pick and have spent vines to clear to make room for more. I have to start the seed in clean store bought dirt and tie a yarn at the bottom of the plant when I transplant it to the larger pot so I can keep volunteers weeded out and kno which ones are the ones supposed to be in a certain spot. It`s tedious work too. Good luck everybody.

I`m looking forward to more pictures later on and want to thank everyone for giving this a try! bye/ bye for now, Karen-05

I put most of mine inside now, so they will be warmer overnight. That should help!

Mesilla Park, NM

Here are the seedlings. After the rain and wind storm last night, I wasn't sure of what would be there this morning...

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I got two pink blizzard and two purple blizzard. So far all white throats and vines growing like there is no tomorrow. I have no time for pictures today. Home school is underway. I`ll see about creating a album soon.

Gourd, I`m glad your plants made it through the storm. These should be lively but not overgrowing vines polite and not take over your garden...hopefully... and the flowers should be in the 4 -5 in range at the most.

The pink parent has a short vine about 4-5 feet with smaller more variegated leaves which made the flowers look huge on the small vine. The purple vine was a longer vine 6-8 ft with larger leaves. So you have two different kinds and I suppose we could get some short vines with the relatively big flowers. Time will tell.

Beth, It will be interesting to see how these do inside.

Thanks a million everyone doing the grow out!!! Karen-05

Another tip: Mine are thriving on morning sun and afternoon partial shade. The trees behind them give them the afternoon shade protecting them from gettng fried in the heat.

Mesilla Park, NM

I also have mine in partial shade, they are loving this weather too.

These look like two peas in a pod. :) Pink and purple mixed

So maybe they aren`t amazing but we can learn about ipomoea nil genetics. We can get some clues here from everyone`s results. And out of about 40 plants there could be a special one to turn up worth saving seed and planting again. You never know!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

They look pretty amazing to me!!

Mesilla Park, NM

to me too, I want some of those purple ones..lol.. I'll take two please..

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks! I`ll bet some of the purple will be carriers for the pink. If you wanted to get rid of pink over about 3 to 4 generations you`d pull the pink vines out as soon as you spotted one to eliminate the pink and then allow the purple to stay. I`d take at least three before I traded the seeds but would tell the other person of the pedigree history since I`d know about it and maybe they could look out for the pink flowers. Over 7 generations the pink should be wiped out hopefully.

If you wanted the pink then you are in luck. The pink ones (since pink is recessive) will breed true right now as long as no cross pollination occurs with other purple or any blue flowers and genes for purple or blue are combined to dominate the pink. Also they will breed true as long as there is no hidden recessive genes for solid or maybe other color patterns we haven`t learned about yet hidden inside.

Ya`ll have a great day!!! :)

Well I have my first bloom. Large purple with white lines. Will try to post a picture later. May need some help with the posting of the picture.

Hi Arlene, That`s looking superb! Looking at the vines you might have a pink one and time will tell. I have both pink and purple but it looks like more purple. I`ll check back later... Karen

Richmond Hill, GA

Hi Karen, Well this morning the vine exploded with blooms. 7 more opened up. I took a picture that I will post tonight. Most are purple. We have something new. Not pink or purple but a pale lavender. This is fun. Wasn't expecting that at all. More later.
