Anytime a plant is sitting there looking glum and not growing you need to feed it. Miracle Grow Bloom Booster flower food works great. You mix it as directed and pour enough to water the plant every 7-10 days. Too much shade will result in limp pathetic do nothing plants. In addition to worrying about the heat killing them you have to find the balance between getting enough rays for them to grow and bloom well without overheating them. I have used pieces of burlap to filter some of the suns rays so it kept them cool in the heat of the day without shading them out too much.
