Some enhancements to the tab navigation

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Dave only disabled the box from moving up and down (as you scroll, it "tagged along.) Which side it appears on is still at the member's discretion.

It may be that your browser has "stuck" an old copy of the screen and isn't letting it go. Try refreshing it or switching temporarily to another browser to see if your setting has changed.

I hate all changes in the beginning, but inevitably find after a few days I've forgotten all about the old way. :-)

One question: Can we make the box (the one that didn't move, then moved, now doesn't move again, all kinds of talk about left or right) so it appears on our home page with the preferences we wish? I'd like to put a quick link to Plant Files in there, for example.

I understand the need for what's in the box to change from tab to tab. I'm talking about one that appears on my home page. There doesn't appear to be one on the home page right now.

A lot of people are mourning the loss of a quick and easy "one link access" to the features from the DG homepage. For a solution, I'm going to program a "Quick Links" box that you can add to your homepage. That box will then be customizable to include whatever links you want, in whatever order you want them. I think that should greatly help your experience.

as Dave posted earlier.

Just a passing thought. Of the comments, how many are actually paid membership and how many are along for the ride. If you don't pay, you are really taking advantage of a good thing and have no right to complain.

LouC, if you mean who are Subscribers, we all have to be to post on here or anywhere almost on DG now. Dave has closed most Forums to Members who are non-payers.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

That would be only fair. Especially in this instance.

This forum (the Dave's Garden forum) has always been for subscribers only.

JUst imagine if over 300,000 people were chiming in! ;-) Dave the weekend is in sight!

I've only been coming to DG for not quite 2 months and finally got comfortable with the way things were before this change. At first, I wasn't too happy with the changes either. However, it made me have to look around and I found things here that I wasn't aware of.

I have spent a lot of time today going through all the tabs and links and find it's not so bad. Definitely different, but still fairly easy to get around. It's just going to take a little getting use to. I did move the box to the right and that made a world of difference for me. I do like that it isn't following me now, as it was very distracting. I like the "my tools" tab, too, on my member page. I don't even know if it was there before.

I think someone said earlier on this thread, that after awhile we won't even remember what the old "Dave's" was like. Just give it some time... :)

Dave, you sure had a lot of static about these changes! Thank you for trying to keep everybody happy.

Hi Dave,

I like the way things are now. I came across a lot a forums and extras I never knew was there - when I joined I was drinking in all this information on the topics I was interested in, and never took the time to look around.
Thanks so much for everything you've done,
Elsa

When I first saw things changed I came right over to Dave's forum to read about it. I have been following this thread for a couple of days..learned that I could move the box to the right and I like it there much better. I wondered about the Plant files too..so clicked around and found it under Guides and Information..makes sense to me now..and quick access to other info.
It will just take us a little bit of time to explore where things are now..but it also encourges us to go places we have seldom been before. I even put some updates on my Blog..also learned that it was just a new name for Diary.I have been here since the beginning of Dave's..and I Love it! Thanks to Dave and Terry for all you do. We must keep up with the new technology.
Keeps us on our toes.
A rose of thanks to Dave and Terry.

Cheers,
Carol

Thanks Nap..it is Lillian Austin.

Oh Dave..thanks for thinking about we who are still on Dial-up.
Many gardeners live where highspeed is not available.

I agree. Better keep that rose pic for the photo contest. There WILL be a photo contest, won't there, Dave?

Of course!

Hi everyone.......I am fairly new here.....and don't know everything about this site yet - but I want to thank you Dave for this wonderful place.....someone said that you can't please all the people all the time and that is so true..... I just wanted to thank you for the great work you put into this site ....in my opinion it is the best site for gardening and garden lovers on the net.I still don't knw how everything works but I will learn ........Thanks so much for everything!

OOOOH>.... I like the new font & colors on the tab box thingie...

Very aesthetically pleasing...

The menu box is MUCH more visually appealing now, Dave! I still don't use the menu box at all, but I'm getting to the point that I don't even notice it now. I'm starting to become accustomed to the changes. :o)

Oh, and I figured out my own fix to the PlantFiles link problem. I have the fun random plant picture at the top of the right column on my homepage. I just click the fun random plant image and then click the green "search plants" button at the top right of the image. It's still just two clicks for me that way! :o)

I'm sincerely sorry if I sounded fussy before, Dave.

I do have one request. Since we have the menu box in all the threads, could you put a link to PlantFiles in it? That's usually how I find a plant I want to look up, is when I see someone else post about one in a thread.

Thanks for everything, Dave! :o)

RainGazer,

Thank you for the feedback.

Adding a link to PlantFiles in the navbox while in the forums doesn't make sense since they are in completely different tabs... If I add every feature of the site to every navbox, that completely defeats the purpose.

But I will be putting together a custom menu that you can put on your DG homepage, and that'll solve almost every navigation challenge.

Had to G weekly newsletter to find a forum I don't watch, but wanted to view.
Is there any other way to find those un-watched forums?
Sidney

Dave,

I understand why the PlantFiles link isn't appropriate for the forums. I think the custom menu on the homepage will indeed solve most all the remaining problems. Great idea! :o)

Thanks!

Sidney, click on Communities - Forums to see the entire list of forums.

But if the addition to plantfiles doesn't make any sense then none of them do......I have a better chance of wanting to go to plantfiles while in a forum than I would Journals, or Plant and seed trading....

PlantFiles is categorized under "Guides and information"

Forums, Journals, Seed and Plant Trading are community features and therefore belong under "Communities"

My Dad always told me "Some people wouldn't be happy if they were hung with a new rope......"

I know, Dave, not supposed to do negative things....but have you read all this stuff?

i also really like the new look of the navigation box. the smaller text looks much better and less visually intrusive. good work. =)

also, since you said you are working on a custom menu, I'd like to suggest having the option of placing the forums and Planfiles search boxes, which are already on the custome menu for the homepage, added to the navigation box so that it is there on every page. That would also solve the problem some people are having with not having a visible Plantfiles tab because it would give quick access to Plantfiles. even though the forums and plantfiles aren't necessarily an applicable topic to some other pages on other tabs, i find that i like to search for something in the forums or in plantfiles randomly while looking at other pages and it would be so nice and convenient to have those search boxes in the same spot regardless of what page i'm looking at.

Thanks!

I simply went to 'My Preferences' and added the PlantFiles searchbox to my home page. I tested it out, and it works great!!

ROFL! Good one - I'll have to remember that.

I've heard that one a lot in my lifetime - LOL!

candyce: I don't see anything under 'Preferences' that would allow you to add the Plant Files search to the Home Page. Could you be more specific as to how you did this?

Let me go back to that area and review what the heck I did.
I'll get right back to you.

As I was going back to see how I had done it, I noticed that Dave sent out an announcement concerning this. You can read it here:

Hmmm. Doesn't seem to work. Ill have to try again when my dogs have calmed down.

I tried it also and can't see a difference anywhere.

If you have accidentally assigned two modules to the same position (column 2, position 2, for example), it will push it around to find a place on your home page.

Also, be sure you have activated the custom menu or it won't show up.

Dave I really like the new look of the menu box too.

Dave, after nearly a month of using the new navigation on DG, I want to say I am very pleased. It is clear, concise and logical. I feel empowered every time I open "My Tools" Thanks, Patti

Thank you for the kind words! I have also grown quite fond of the new layout. I love clicking on "My Tools" and then Blog whenever I have a quick update to make. I like it. :)
