Morning Glories 2007 # 17

(Zone 7a)

Y'all really know how to make a MG lover's heart pitter-patter with your gorgeous pics.

Here is a F2 seedling from a seed that came to me labeled as an open-pollinated I. youjiro 'Yagurama'. The flower looks a little like Patootie's Star of India, but it's on a deer-chewed vine that has since sent out many vigorous side-vines from the denuded leaf axils as well as clambered into the yew hedge - something I don't see the I. nils doing here - I'm thinking it's those I. purpurea genes beefing up the vine & shoots. Also, the color is much more of a deep, dark, velvety purple with fuchsia highlights that I do not have a clue how to get unless I photograph the flower indoors (any tips are welcome).

But, ain't it purty?

bluespiral, that is a nice blue color in your flower!

Thanks Ron and Joseph. So, if I share seed from Maisugata-like, would it be correct to say that it looks like Maisugata but had different parentage? The parent of this vine (F1) was very different from this one in my garden last year, and the parent of the F1 was called Yagurama by the trader which I guess was probably open pollinated.

This is one of the flowers I've gotten different from its name, but so beautiful that I love it for itself. Plus, I'm seeing quite a few traits with which I'm looking forward to making crosses, as well as to stabilizing.

To the trader: profuse thanks

Only the camera thinks it's that blue - it's more like a dark, velvety purple with fuchsia highlights in the "nap" of the velvet

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I sold some open pollinated yaguruma seeds as a mixture possibly containing blue or color variants but unsure if that was me. I also did a test grow and 8 of 10 out flowers were pink yaguruma and 2 were obvious crosses with the mai sugata from bees mixing pollen. The leaves look more like the yaguruma leaves and the coloring favors the maisugata.

The hand tied pods were 100% pink yaguruma. I don`t know about the name. I`m still learning the Japanese names.

Really like this bloom.
It has some features of some of my 'Plum Frost' sports with the slight 'frost' at the edge of the petals.

Curious to see how the other blooms look.

This bloom is the Baby Blue with White Picotee Edge that came out of Livingston's Double Blue Picotee Seed Pack that so many of us have gotten, however, this bloom looks a bit different than the other blooms. This one has the same blooms on this particular vine.
I really like it!

I think I found an answer to my question, in case anyone reading this was curious. In http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3858900 , I was wondering whether to call a seedling not known to be descended from Maisugata by the name Mai Sugata, since it had characteristics of Mai Sugata.

Around the time of last Christmas, there was a very comprehensive, indepth dialogue on Japanese morning glory identity that went into related questions and explorations. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/678457/

I think the following quote from Ron answers my question:

"My perspective on the application of the term cultivar is that cultivar can justifiably apply to any(!) plant that has been intentionally bred or selected(!) for particular traits...a cultivar does not have to be a registered or 'recognized' cultivar to be a cultivar in the broadest sense of the term..."

So, if a MG has characteristics of a cultivar that have been stabilized, then it can take the name of that cultivar, even though it may have antecedents different from that cultivar.

And, therefore, since my vine's characteristics have not been stabilized, I should not call it Mai Sugata, but just say it has similar characteristics in this generation and that following generations can be different.
