it's actually a gloxinia, but no name for it. I love it, though. ; )
Propagation pictures & such
Those are one of my very favorite plants..................thanks so much for the pic..........you need to brag on both growing the plant and the great picture..............show us more!!!!!!!!!
Duh .... I musta had Strep's on the brain! It IS a Glox as I can so clearly see now! :)
Beautiful one at that! I love Gloxinia's and usually buy them off the clearance tables at Wal-Mart when they mark them down. Got a couple a few years back for 50 cents each! I posted this pic a day or so ago .... one I didn't know I had ... found the bulb in a pot when I was dumping old soil ... thought it was a calla lily bulb! I have another that has leaves but no flowers yet. Would love trying to grow one from seeds some day!
how much fun can it get??????????? good going Lin..............
I love rescuing stuff from the clearance table .... cheap, so if it doesn't survive not much money lost! If by chance it survives and thrives .... it's just a bonus and yes so much fun!
CJ..I Love that! The color is awesome.Looks like candy.Yummm : )
I tried some seeds ki sent but I can't germinate a seed to save me so I just give up: (
Lin,That is really pretty.Clearance table huh?Guess I got to start checking them out a little closer.Great Buy : )
We have covered so many subjects on Rain's thread..........but I just found out something new to me. Kim, the owner of my favorite nursery, came over yesterday to talk about starting to build flower beds for me..................when she was in the house she saw my episcias and got so excited.
Her father was in the growing business all his life and grew episcias. She said he put them outside on the porch every spring and summer...........and that they loved the heat and humidity. i can't wait until i can try mine outside.
I am going to be busy next week so I will do it the following week and report back as to how happy they are...................
Cedarnest: The plants on Wal-Mart's clearance table in the garden center look really pitiful but when I find Gloxinia's or any Bulb type plants for 50 cents I figure you can't go wrong ... maybe the bulbs have a bit of life left in them!
Gail: That is good to know! I am going to move my Episcia's out to my back deck tomorrow for a few days to see how they do. They shouldn't be in the direct sun should they? I figured just the bright light and humidity of the covered deck may be good for them .... will let you know how they fare outside!
i would be afraid to place them where the direct sun is unless it would be early morning sun............i don't know what i am talking about.........just a guess.........
Yeah, I had a feeling they wouldn't like direct sun .... especially down here - the sun is too intense. I have Hoya's and Lipstick plants hanging in the front of my house, facing East and they get some filtered sun in the morning and love that location .... I might try an Episcia out there to see how it does. The humidity is really unbelievable right now. We've had temps of mid-high 90's lately and the past two days the heat index with humidity has been 110! I can't believe I've been saying I look forward to winter! Well ..... maybe not winter! I did yard work at 9 O'clock this morning so I could get it done before the heat of mid day .... it was still hot! Woke up a couple of nights ago at 1:30 a.m. and checked the thermostat for outdoor temp - it was 84 degrees! The middle of the night! 84 degrees! Aaaargh ... that's hot!
Love it, ladylin! And what a bargain!
Sorry, gail, that's my bloom show right now. lol Lots of houseplants here but most of them don't really flower.
:( Waaaaaaa ..... I am stomping my foot here and saying "No fair"!! Why can't I propagate like that?
Think my temper tantrum will make me any better at it? I'm not giving up trying! Gotta get it right sooner or later! I can propagate AV's and different house plants from leaves/cuttings .... why do I have such a hard time with Strep's? I haven't even tried Episcia's yet ... only have a couple of small ones and I'm too afraid to take leaves for fear that they might get mad at me and croak!
Great job Snow .... Lovely as always!
those episcia seedlings have soooooooo much color in them..............love seeing the growing taking place...............we are all aspiring to do it as well as snow does, Lin...........don't feel badly........................
That begonia trailer is gorgeous snow. Those episcias are really neat too(love the coloring) and oooo those variegated streps.Yum : )
I didn't even know there was such a thing as a trailing Begonia .... that is one really pretty Begonia!
Thanks for the nice comments...
This thread is getting so long...Raingazer, I think you need a Part II...
Plantladylin - this begonia would do very well for you in Florida as it highly rated for heat and humidity tolerance. It is beautiful I think.
SusanGa - I have the strep seedlings growing upstairs under lights wick'd and matted in a plastic sweater box. I need to give them a little more room soon.
A sampling of rooted kohleria cuttings....
Snow, I think you're right...I'll start a Part II...
But first, I have to compliment you on your fantastic growing! All your plants are just beautiful!
I have to ask...what is the burgundy colored Kohleria? Middle-ish of the top row of your last picture. It is simply stunning! I've only got a couple of Kohlerias, but am having a fit to get more! Perhaps when some of my seedlings grow up, we could trade, if I have anything you'd like. :o)
Hi Raingazer....thanks.
The kohleria you like is 'Dark Velvet'. I too like the very dark foliage on that one. I have many, many more kohlerias. Haven't counted them all...I should make a list one of these days. Sure, I would love to trade with you.
Speaking of propagation, this chimera trailer 'Fiery Trail' is getting ready to go to the chopping block as soon as I have extra time. It has been a pleasure to grow and I would like to take it apart for lots of new plants. I don't know if it would be interesting, but maybe I should take pictures along the way and post the process.
Oh, that's a Beautiful Chimera! I have only one little Chimera that was a sucker given to me by a lady in the local AV club .... it's called 'Peppermint Kathy' and I can't wait for it to grow and bloom! I haven't found a photo of it yet ... I'm wondering if it's the one I've found called Suncoast Peppermint Kathy? Anyway, I'm sure I will love it whatever it looks like!
I'd love to see a list of your Kohlerias, Snow, along with pictures, if possible! ;o) 'Dark Velvet' is definitely on my want list now. LOL
A pending trade!! Yay!! :o)
I think you should post pictures of the Chimera propagation process. In fact, I request that you please do. Perhaps, for easy location, you could title it "Chimera propagation". I think anything like that is quite informative and a great help to those of us who have never done it, but might one day need to. I won't have to as I don't have any Chimeras, but I know quite a few people do and I'm sure it would benefit them greatly. 'Fiery Trail' is a beauty! :o)
Snow, please please do a tutorial as you go along.................I will have chimeras ready in a couple of months and i don't have a clue as to what to do..................
have one question................I have Harmony's Little Stinker (LOL as i got it from you).............she absolutely will not sucker.............I will show you what she looks like and the size..........please tell me what to do with her............
I also realize that I have not been doing my Kohleria cuttings right.............I just keep adding another cutting to a 4" pot with the mother and other cuttings...........
Oh Gail .... That one called Harmony's Little Stinker is great! I love the variegation in that foliage! Is it a mini, semi mini? Must go google that one!
ooooh .... Thank You Snow! I can't wait for mine to look like that! I had no idea it was soooo pretty! The lady at our local AV club just had some she wanted to get rid of .... and I bought a couple from her and she gave me that Chimera! Her mom plant wasn't blooming when I was there so I didn't have a clue as to what it would be!
Lists aren't a strong point of mine, either, Snow. That comes a bit too close to being organized for me...*shudder* LOL
This is my last post on this thread (Part I)...hint, hint, Raingazer!
Gessiegail - hmmm, you just might need to make it sucker but you might not like what you have to do. I have a larger plant of HLS and I could do a demo of a crown cutting on it. What happens when the original plant has it's crown removed is that it will send up numerous suckers in it's place which you can in turn remove and root for more plants. I have done this many times.
Or, you can just enjoy growing yours for a while till it blooms. I'll send along a photo of Harmony's Little Stinker (chimera foliage) in bloom.
Also, nothing wrong with what you are doing with your kohlerias. In fact, I think they look great nice and full with multiple stems.
Plantladylin - very nice gift!
Beautiful, Snow! I love that one! :o)
Here's the new thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/758735/ Don't want you to stop posting! LOL
oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has to be the most beautiful plant I have ever seen....................glad to know it is okay to add a lot of cuttings to the same pot..............(with the Kohlerias)
i turned in an order for some unusual gesneriads from Rob and asked him for any other Peridots............he was real nice and actually emailed me a note to say that he didn't have any more but would have a lot in 08.............which is good news............
I can't wait for your tutorial....................I knew you knew i wouldn't like taking the crown out, but why could I plant the crown in some mix in a zip lock bag and grow another plant?????????
Oh ... I've gotta buy one of those Harmony's Little Stinker AV's! That is one Beautiful Plant! Both the Foliage and Blossom on that one are Gorgeous! I've been googling and looking at pic's - how time flies when I get to googling plants!
