Propagation pictures & such

I've got tons of pictures I can post, it's hot outside, and after a week of being out there all day, every day, I'm tired of working out there. So, this is how I'm spending my day. If y'all get tired of me posting so many pictures, just tell me and I'll stop. :o)

This is Chirita 'Blue Moon'

Lin, my plants aren't work to me, they are my link to sanity. LOL It's quite calming to me to work with them, and it's something I truly love. Now that I've stopped fretting so over AVs and decided if they live, they live, and if they don't, they don't, I'm having so much more fun. Taking care of so many AVs was stressful to me, but the small number of them I have now is a pleasure to care for, along with all the other more forgiving plants that I love so dearly. :o)

Aeschynanthus 'Black Pagoda' It has never bloomed, but I think it's gorgeous anyway.

This is why I added the "& such" to the title of this thread. I didn't propagate some of these, but I knew I wouldn't be able to resist posting them. LOL

Chirita 'Silver Surfer' about to bloom for the first time! :o) I can't wait!

I agree Amy ... I don't consider my plants work ..... but if I had a full time job and had to take care of the many plants I have around here I wouldn't enjoy them as much! Fiddling with my plants is my therapy! I've always felt that way. I can lose all track of time when I'm playing in the dirt!

I used to have a Chirita 'Silver Surfer' but it didn't survive! I found this one blooming when I got back from visiting my sister. Not a good pic since my camera is acting up ( hee hee ... it's really the person using the camera.) This is C. 'Stardust':

This unknown Glox was blooming when I got home too. My one and only Petrocosmea 'barbata' is in the jar to the right.

Thumbnail by plantladylin

Those are beautiful, Lin! We need to trade leaves! ;o) I've only had Chirita 'Hisako' to bloom for me, but hopefully the rest of my Chiritas will bloom soon. I've never had a Glox to bloom. Cheryl sent me one last year but I killed it. :o( Your P. barbata is lovely! I love the perfect little rosettes of the Petrocosmeas! I've got a P. momo I'm growing from a leaf. Let me go snap a picture...

(Zone 1)

Keep posting your pic's Amy .... I Love it! It's great to see your success! I am learning from some of y'all .... you have helped me tremendously with great advice and telling me not to give up when something fails to germinate or grow! Some of these plants like the Petrocosmea, Ping thing and a few others, I had never heard of until y'all posted about them!

Here's the Petrocosmea momo growing from a leaf I accidentally broke off the mom plant. I wouldn't have had the heart to actually break one off on purpose. I would now, though. LOL

ooooh .... so you can propagate those Petro's from leaf too??? See .... I am learning! I've had no luck with Strep's. My one that was doing so well - Dilby's Gwen was so pretty and blooming when I left to go visit my Sis .... came home and it's almost dead. I pulled off all the dead leaves and it does not look good at all. I had a couple of other really small strep's that are dead (or sure are playing dead) too. I am really loving the Chirita's - they seem to do a lot better for me. I have some that seem to be very slow growing but hanging in there well. C. 'Kazu' looks like she may have a bloom stalk forming ... hope that's what I'm seeing but it may be a new leaf. I have that really HUGE C. 'Aiko' that was given to me by Hoya24 that's been blooming for weeks and another that I got from Bluebird Greenhouse. The one from BB is getting large too but no blooms yet.

Oh, about that Gloxinia .... that bulb and another were buried in pots out on my deck ... a couple I bought on the Clearance table at Wal-Mart a few years ago! I thought they had died. I was emptying pots this past spring and found bulbs in the soil and not knowing what they were (I thought they were Calla Lily bulbs) - I figured I would pot them up to see if they would sprout, And, lo and behold they did! I hate throwing stuff away and I'm glad I didn't trash them! Not as pretty as when they were fresh, but hey I still love them, especially when they decide to bloom. The other one is smaller and has no sign of blooming yet, but we'll see!

Oh, that is sooo great! Now I want to go pull some leaves off that Petrocosmea I have to see if I can get them to root!

How big is that Sinn. Purple Crest? I know some Sinningia's get real large ....

(Zone 1)

Well ... I gotta get off here for awhile, dinner is in the oven and I must go finish cooking! Will catch up with this thread later .... keep showing us those pic's Amy!

One of my Chiritas had several bloom stalks just starting, and I'm embarrassed to say, they have dried out for lack of water. :o( I need to repot the Chiritas into the Texas method so maybe that won't happen anymore.

I've not seen Gloxinias at Walmart, but you can be sure I'll start watching for them!

See ya later, Lin! Hubby's still working outside, so our supper will be late tonight. I'll get started on it in a bit. LOL

Aeschynanthus longicaulis

My Sinn 'White Sprite' seeds won't germinate. :o( I won't give up on them, though. I tried Chirita tamiana seeds before and they didn't germinate, and now I've tried them again, sowed them the same day as these, and they haven't germinated yet, either. Maybe they're just slower than most... I've got a second cup of them from the seeds Gail ordered, so maybe between both cups, I'll at least get a plant or two.

Sinn 'Rio das Pedras' has germinated! :o) I had a few of these last year, but lost them to thrips. :o(

Also, look at this codanthes (3 little pots at a nursery barely alive).......it is pretty woody.........do I just take cuttings like I would anything?

I love your Black Pagoda..........nan sent me a start but i can't get it to bloom

these are the little pots of codanthes.............need to take cuttings.

Thumbnail by gessiegail

I'm not sure where Ki comes by all those seeds, but I'm sure the Gessie Soc is at least one source.

Beautiful 'Aiko'! Can't wait til mine's that big! :o) Glad to hear your C. tamiana leaves are doing well. I've got high hopes for these seeds! :o)

I can't get my 'Black Pagoda' to bloom either. Stubborn plant. LOL

I'll find that link where Ki showed how to put down cuttings of Codonanthes. Nifty idea! I tried it and it works! :o)

My family insists that I feed them, so I'm going to go start something for supper. I'll get it going and sneak back in here! LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I need to do something other than the computer, too.....................don't forget the link Ki sent you to on codanthes.

Ooh La-La Amy,I am loving your picture show.Such lovely plants.Makes me feel a tad inferior tho..lol.Great growin' Hey..Momo is looking good...actually... Great!!Who would have ever thought it would recover so nicely and giving you babies to boot. Can't beat that : ) Keep them pictures coming.I'm gonna pop some popcorn later and I will be back : ))

I'm going to look for the link, but Gail, what is that plant in the very bottom corner of your picture of the Codonanthes?? The dark foliage with the white veins?? It is absolutely gorgeous!!

Nancy, I'm so glad you're enjoying the pictures. Thank you so much for sending the Petrocosmea to me! I wouldn't have it if not for you! :o) LOL about the popcorn! ;o)

Gail, this is Ki's main thread about the cutting method. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/743950/
And these two are links to the pictures with instructions. http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3695959 http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3695962

And here are some I've done the same way. I put these down on 7-19 following Ki's advice. The cups went into a ziploc bag and onto the shelf. See the new growth?

Here are more Codonanthe cuttings put down the same day.

hee hee Cedarnest ..... I love that idea of pop corn and watching Amy's picture show! Sounds like a plan! We just finished dinner and the kitchen is clean so now I'm back to play on the computer again! I have a Black Pagoda that hasn't bloomed yet but I've only had it for a few months. Got cuttings in a trade from someone (maybe you Amy) and when I saw the plant at Wal-Mart I couldn't resist! I have a few Lipstick plants and a few have bloomed but not the Black Pagoda. It looks a bit wilty .... sulking because I was gone for 8 days I guess. Sure hope it grows up to look as good as yours Amy ... yours is a Beauty!

I have quite a few of those EA plants that Home Depot, Lowes & Wal-Mart sells. Here's another lipstick that's starting to bloom, name tag says 'Rasta': I liked the kinda krinkly curly leaves of this one.

Your 'Black Pagoda' is lovely, Lin! 'Rasta' is too! I have a 'Rasta' but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours does. I need to take cuttings and just restart the whole thing.

Thumbnail by RainGazer
(Zone 1)

That one looks great to me Amy! Are these plants easy to root cuttings from? I might just have to take some cuttings from my different Lipstick's and see if I have any luck rooting them!

I rooted 'Black Pagoda' very easily. Just stuck the cuttings in my mix and off they went! I'd suggest using Ki's method for them. I didn't, and they worked fine, but I would have had a lot more from the cuttings I took if I'd used that method. Put a bunch in a pot, put it in a large ziploc bag, and let them go! You'd have a full pot in no time, I bet! I might try that myself.

That 'Rasta' of mine looks awful when you get close to it. It was bone dry when I bought it, and had already begun to decline, but I could see its potential! LOL

Just start taking cuttings of everything, Lin, stick them in the mix, bag 'em up, and forget them for a month or so. I bet you'll really have plants coming out your ears then! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am jealous that you all have so many kinds of (I can't spell it)...............i saw them early in the spring at a nursery in Corpus and they wanted 30.00 each and i wouldn't take the bite...........now i wish I had them..................we never see them at our Lowes or Walmart, etc.

I do have cuttings of the 'light prince' columnea and it will take me until next summer to get a full basket, but it is worth the wait..............

We all who have seeds need to thank Rain..............I got all excited tonight and made all the tags and even swiped the solo cups from down the road as this is the first time I have ever run out of them. My sister in law was in bed with a bad back............she would have said yes if I had ask for the house (LOL)

Truly, Rain, i don't know how you had the patience to make those little packages..............good thing they didn't come to me.............they would not have made it to anyone else's house for sure.

I could send you cuttings of the Aeschynanthus plants I have, Gail. You know I'd be happy to. :o)

That 'Light Prince' is definitely a plant to have!! Simply gorgeous!!

You never did tell me what that plant in the picture with your Codonanthes is...

I still need to send seeds to two people. Lin, you're one of them. I've got them ready, but just haven't gotten them to the PO. I'll get there tomorrow, hopefully. I enjoyed separating them and making up the packets. Not a bit of trouble, really. :o)

I've got this plant, too. Supposed to be Aeschynanthus radicans, but I don't know if that's correct.

Thumbnail by RainGazer
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Rain, let's do a quick exchange ................you send me some cuttings of these............great looking plants..............and I will gather some cuttings for you.................I have to go back and look at the picture of the codanthes I posted.

That is a variegated Aralia you see..............I keep all those plants that will go into terrariums and plantings around the house...............

I bought a lipstick plant and it looked good until the rains started..............going to take it and put it in full sun for a while.......and see what happens..........will it burn????????

(Zone 1)

Ooooh .... I forgot to ask about the seeds! I had it on my mind last week and then totally forgot! I can't wait to try these babies. D-Mail me with what I owe and who I owe what!

I have one that looks like that one Amy but mine had no tag when I bought it! It seems to grow in an upward fashion instead of vining outward. I think it needs repotting. Let me go get a pic if I can. Here it is ... does it look like 'radicans' to you?

Thumbnail by plantladylin

Oh that sounds wonderful, Gail! :o) I've got some good stuff I can send you! I love trades!! LOL

It's not the Aralia, it's the one at the very bottom corner, below the Aralia and the other variegated plant, it's got real dark leaves with white veins.

I wouldn't put the lipstick in full sun. Maybe morning sun, and bright shade after that, especially with the HOT sun you've got! ;o)

It looks an awful lot like mine, Lin. I'll get a close up picture of mine later tonight or in the morning, then you can compare it to yours.

The family are inside and ready to eat, so I'm off to feed them. :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It is a variegated dwarf ruellia..............it is not happy right now...............the other day I decided that since my front porch didn't get direct sun that I would take some plants outside.............big mistake.............lost one of my favorite begonias............so i brought everything else back in except the Alsobia Cygnet..............she is happy outside.....

Lin..............you don't owe me anything..........you may owe postage to Rain...........as she sent out a lot of them................
